outime··on The News Is Information Junk Food (2022)
We should start understanding that "independent" rankings won't ever work. Let's not even get started with "fact-checking" places which we can count by dozens per country now, as they all have their own interpretations (or otherwise a single one alone would be enough).

For such a thing to work, it needs to be funded. At the end, it doesn't matter if it comes from public or private hands, it's going to be leaning towards one direction or another, then a group of people will consider it the absolute truth and other group of people will create their own site for "fact-checking".

If humans cannot possibly be objective and independent (yes, that's what I believe after 30+ years in this planet and having met multiple people), then news cannot possibly be. Bearing in mind such a limitation, let's think how this can be possibly improved.

I personally gave up on news being informative and just see it as entertainment - it's a narrative business.

outime··on Common side effects of not drinking
The photo illustrating the post is a funny comparison: author holding a glass of drug A (alcohol) vs author holding a cup of - most likely - drug B (caffeine).

Don't take this as a critique to the overall article, I actually liked the reflections.

outime··on AWS Code Commit Ceased Onboarding New Customers
The fact that there was no dogfooding in many years here tells everything one needs to know about CodeCommit.
outime··on Jellyfin: We're Good, Seriously
I have never used Plex even though I've heard it's superior but I just didn't bother when I saw exactly what you said. Creating an account somewhere to use my own instance? Even though I could just block all outbound traffic and hope it'll still work - no thanks. Jellyfin turned out very fine.
outime··on Show HN: ChatGPT Chrome Extension to Keep Temporary Chat Enabled
At least for some time, this was completely ignored. Not sure if it works again.
outime··on Bananas Don't Taste Like They Used To. Here's Why
Obese != well nourished. You can be obese yet have nutritional deficiencies that show in one way or another.
outime··on Bananas Don't Taste Like They Used To. Here's Why
What are you supposed to say if you read a statement that includes you in a group you don't belong? That's why it's important to be more precise instead of saying "customers" in general.
outime··on Local First, Forever
For someone who always complains about design choices, it's quite ironic that he ended up putting mouse cursors flying around, obstructing your view and constantly distracting. At the Blacksmith's House...
outime··on Curl is inside 22,734 Steam games
Given that there is one or more weekly posts from his website here [1] for some reason, I'd suspect most of the people know this fact already.

outime··on Loop: Open-source macOS window manager
The title should be edited, this is only partially open-source.
outime··on EU: Users who refuse scanning to be prevented from sharing photos and links
That's exactly what's going to happen, and the few people who actually care will end up in a list. It's all for your own good though, as terrorist and pedos will obviously be like "damn gotta find something else to do now as this is forbidden!".
outime··on Stop Using Discord
I'm not suggesting surrender, but I want to point out that a significant portion of the HN crowd seems to have a very specific perspective that doesn't align with reality. The average Discord user (hence, the largest percentage of the userbase) prioritize convenience, whether they're regular users or server creators. They don't care about being indexed by Google - they just want to connect quickly, chat, play games together, and so on.

This convenience-driven mindset extends to technical communities on Discord. Creating a server there is as simple as clicking a couple of buttons, whereas setting up a new forum requires significant technical effort and ongoing maintenance, besides $$$. These practical aspects are often overlooked in discussions, hence the failure of all these campaigns lead by a bit too technical people i.e. those who are willing to spend time researching alternatives and enduring their particular pains, and don't care about networking effects.

To challenge Discord effectively, create something equally convenient yet superior (like being indexable by Google). Wait for Discord's deep enshittification and seize the opportunity then. If it's not as convenient, don't expect users to switch. The average user won't invest time in learning new platforms when they can get everything faster and for free elsewhere.

outime··on Stop Using Discord
It will be as useful as other HN campaigns: stop using WhatsApp and use Signal, stop using Chrome and use Firefox, stop using Twitter and use this OSS alternative with 0.1% of the users, stop using Reddit, stop using Kubernetes, etc.
outime··on Show HN: File0 – An easier way to manage files in serverless apps
Standard S3 is $.02/GB, this is $.12/GB so 6x the price. You don't pay data transfer with this solution at least.

Quick alternative:

  #!/bin/bash

  if [ "$#" -ne 2 ]; then
    echo "Usage: $0 <file-to-upload> <s3-bucket-name>"
    exit 1
  fi

  FILE_TO_UPLOAD=$1
  S3_BUCKET=$2
  S3_OBJECT_NAME=$(basename "$FILE_TO_UPLOAD")

  aws s3 cp "$FILE_TO_UPLOAD" "s3://$S3_BUCKET/$S3_OBJECT_NAME" --acl public-read

  if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
    echo "File uploaded successfully."
    PUBLIC_URL="https://$S3_BUCKET.s3.amazonaws.com/$S3_OBJECT_NAME"
    echo "The file is publicly accessible at: $PUBLIC_URL"
  else
    echo "Failed to upload file."
    exit 1
  fi
outime··on California says restaurants must bake all of their add-on fees into menu prices
The good ol' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bait-and-switch in a way.
outime··on McDonald's and other big brands warn that low-income consumers starting to crack
I guess the point is that yes it was always unhealthy but at least you could get something tasty cheap and fast, but now the unhealthy part is more difficult to ignore if everything else has also gone to the gutter.
outime··on Whistleblower Josh Dean of Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems has died
I have no idea but if many decades ago they revealed this [1], at this point it's safe to assume there are much better things.

outime··on FireChat was a tool for revolution, then disappeared
Same exact experience, uninstalled it.
outime··on EU Police Chiefs want an end to end-to-end encryption
It's not a bug, it's a feature. In other words, I don't think they're being ignorant at all. They've been pushing this angle from different places in the EU and this is one more. They won't stop until it's a reality.
outime··on Nestlé adds sugar to infant milk sold in poorer countries, report finds
Manufacturers will do only what they're allowed to by law and even more. Expecting ethics from companies, especially (but not only) corporations, must stop. It's not going to happen, and it will only lead to further disappointment.
outime··on El Prado Museum – Virtual Tour
Also worth mentioning the growing concern about security, which worsens each year: https://www.barcelona.cat/infobarcelona/en/tema/security-and...
outime··on The NSA is just days away from taking over the internet
Sure, surveil all internet traffic is just to prevent 'human evil,' not to perpetuate it further.

I can't even imagine writing this comparison of democracy vs. totalitarian regimes while the 'democracy' is behaving in the same way as a totalitarian regime in this context.

outime··on A day in the life of a Walmart manager
Or making developers run the app/website on average laptops/phones that users commonly use, rather than on the most expensive MacBooks/iPhones.
outime··on Self-Hosted Is Awesome
Self-hosting does provide value: privacy, learning, what @Macha said, etc. A different topic is that it's not enough or valuable to you, which is fine of course.
outime··on Self-Hosted Is Awesome
As a person who spent way too many hours self-hosting stuff as a (pre)teen and beyond, I have to say that Docker (or Podman, or anything equivalent) has been a godsend. I know it's not popular for many here in HN for whatever reason but once you wrap your head around it, it doesn't make any sense to go back to non-containerized workloads - it's just so convenient and nice.
outime··on Surprising public health benefit of unemployment?
And if people cease to procreate, it's even more advantageous!
outime··on Why can't my mom email me?
The only issue with WhatsApp (I have no idea about Signal) is that, while it offers seamless encryption, it doesn't allow you to use an alternative client. Therefore, all trust has to be placed in the client and its distribution to ensure it doesn't mess up (intentionally or not). For the average Joe however I totally agree with you and it's a good baseline.
outime··on Faces.js, a JavaScript library for generating vector-based cartoon faces
I liked it a lot, including the README. The author seems to be an indie dev who creates sport management sim games [1], all of which run entirely in the browser like the linked library (which is used in the games).

outime··on Almost no one cares if your site is not on social media
Yeah, you're right, even though we could say the same about Signal and others. In my defense, I know [1] very well - it's not a website!

outime··on Almost no one cares if your site is not on social media
Compared to the other examples, it's rarely used. For instance, Messenger has 3B MAU whereas Signal has 40M, which is just a bit over 1% of Messenger's user base, yet Messenger wasn't mentioned in OP among others which is my point.
