> You could be truthful and say "While masks are effective, please dont horde them as they are needed by the hospitals".

I’m not a politician nor I defend most of them in general but do you expect that people would not hoard them when everyone was (back then) panicking at a new extreme deadly virus?

So the easiest solution (not necessarily the best) was to do politics which is to deceive. If a country says that the masks are very effective yet only selected people will get them, even if it makes sense factually speaking, riots will ensue because that’s how masses work (in most big countries anyway). If you deceive, you gain time and everyone will eventually get their own masks, which is how it played out.

Hopefully I don’t get shunned by this. I’m just trying to illustrate that plain transparency at extreme situations may just not be an easy option as you put it.

outime··on Show HN: Offline-First Personal Kanban
So I'm not trying to sound rude but your original comment would've been much better if you included an alternative.

Also my point was that you'd not find a single person offering a free cross-platform app like this one, not that you'd find a single person offering a native app for a single OS as you've happened to find (edit: and just realized your alternative is $15 so hardly comparable to what OP offers).

outime··on Show HN: Offline-First Personal Kanban
I would honestly like to know what’s the point of these comments. This person offers a free, open-source and cross-platform offline app in the most cost-effective way as a single developer not willing to make money and then one person comes and says “yeah cool but not native”.

No single person I know is going to work alone to deliver a native app with such features. Let this person have his/her minute of glory because it’s well deserved.

outime··on Ask HN: What helps you improve your mood and keep your sanity?
I wrote a bit about it here in HN [1]. Not everyone is the same but for me quitting gave me back the chilled mood and personality I had before starting with coffee several years ago. I didn't realize coffee took it away until kind of recently.

outime··on Ask HN: What helps you improve your mood and keep your sanity?
Exercise and sauna are truly essential for me and I happen to live in Finland so the latter is very accessible.

I notice how my mood goes down quickly (specially approaching winter) if I don't exercise even if other parts of my life are ok. It doesn't matter that I have some nice goals set, good books to read, side projects, nice games... I just feel very apathetic if I don't do it.

Oh yeah and no alcohol and definitely no coffee.

outime··on Helsinki Relocation Package: City as a Service
I've been living in Finland for close to 10 years and I'm from Spain. Came to study an university degree and stayed after that.

If you're pretty young and you work in FAANG then stay where you are and save money. When you get older and want to form a family then move here.

Another option is if you're living in a poorer country and you want to pursue a degree (for EU people it's free) or have a decent tech job (stress is the lowest here, pay is good if you don't compare to FAANG). Spain is good to hang out and socialize but when it comes to work it's usually miserable so it was an easy decision for me since I can visit the country often while my daily life has been simplified a lot.

outime··on New study finds psilocybin greatly and quickly relieves depression
I read "How to change your mind" last year and I tried this. It worked very well.

As many studies indicate, it temporarily disables/decreases DMN (among other effects) which is exactly what a depressed person would need: break the vicious self-destructive circle. Only then I could start making hard but necessary decisions and change my life completely. Depression is nowhere to be seen but that's because I actually changed things and didn't become complacent.

I'd not recommend to do it without spending a good time doing research. The aforementioned book is a great resource.

outime··on A divorce in Italy destroyed my researcher career
It happens a lot in Spain as well. I met many people (always men) who had to deal with similar situations.

Unfortunately in some countries, forming a family can really go south for the guys if the woman decides so.

outime··on 2020's fastest-rising tech jobs? Programming language PHP leads the way
This aligns with my anecdotal experience. I started with PHP more than a decade ago and every company I've worked for (very large, large and medium-sized) has migrated away from it or never touched it. I don't see any sort of renaissance but if PHP has gotten really better as I read many times here (didn't bother to fact check as I abandoned it many years ago) then the market will speak. I don't see that happening yet in my experience.
outime··on Ask HN: How do you deal with chronic illness?
Fasting might be a bit risky at advanced ages but reducing carbs (not only sugar) to the minimum for quite a while and then being very conscious about the intake in the future is the key to success. Also you'll lose some weight which can be good if you're not that slim.

Source: two family members on his 50s and 60s completely cured, one was about to use insulin and the other one was using it already for about a year.

outime··on Waypoint: Build, deploy, and release applications across any platform
I have been using Terraform since 0.11 and it's always allowed to destroy resources, what do you mean?
outime··on I sold my side-project for $30k
Yeah, it's a big difference. I hope it's just for views and not that the author sees it that way. Money that's not in your hands isn't yours and may never be yours.
outime··on Remote Code Execution in Slack desktop apps
I haven't said anything about black markets but:

>You would sell something like this, so someone can be spied upon or maybe literally chopped to pieces? Jesus, not everything is about money

Not me, not you, but many people make it all about money. I don't think it's ridiculous to think that people can have absolutely zero ethics.

outime··on Ask HN: What non-obvious tech/market may take off in the next few years?
I have been reading the same prediction my whole life so I'm sure this will be a boom at some point by pure chance. But I tend to think that those solutions already exists, and the typical tool coming to mind is WordPress. You literally don't need to know code, just install some plugins that give what you want and go ahead. Pay someone to maintain it (there are tons of companies already). It doesn't need to be WordPress, there are many other platforms. For low code Django comes to mind.

For the very typical use cases there are well suited SaaS tools e.g. Shopify for shops.

I do think that the very typical cases are well covered. Sure, there's room for improvement but not sure if a real boom is around the corner but as I said I heard this so many times (and also seen so many tries) that well, at some point something may actually happen I guess.

outime··on Telegram messaging app proves crucial to Belarus protests
How does attacking Facebook dismiss the fact that Telegram has your raw conversations and can monetize them?
outime··on PHP 8.0.0 beta 2
Your example is similar to a WordPress developer saying they adopted modern PHP - sure, they were on PHP already. But at least Vimeo still wanted to stick to PHP so that's one positive point.
outime··on Telegram messaging app proves crucial to Belarus protests
Compared to WhatsApp, they do have access to all messages from every person (except for the few people using secret chats) and group so I'd not be very surprised if they started to mine that data somehow if they really want the money.
outime··on PHP 8.0.0 beta 2
Maybe I'm not in the right circles but I see absolutely no renewed interest towards PHP. Is there any reason to believe that? Honest question - PHP was my first language (or second if you want to consider mIRC scripting) and I have not so bad memories but at least me and everybody I know moved away from it years ago and don't see people going back to it anytime soon.
outime··on I Love MDN, or the cult of the free in action
It's a good example. I'm happy to donate to Mozilla for the goal of an open web, nothing else. And since I don't agree with everything else that they do and sell as within their mission I simply stopped donating long time ago.
outime··on I Love MDN, or the cult of the free in action
>I thought my comment was phrased in a way that was polite and direct.

Well, I said I wouldn't want a NGO to use my money to take any stance unrelated to their original apolitical goal and your follow-up questions is along the lines of "oh so would you be ok if they aligned with your political stance?". Don't say thay's a genuine question because it's not, it just feels like a bait.

outime··on I Love MDN, or the cult of the free in action
No, not really. If I want to donate to achieve a specific technical goal (e.g. documentation about something completely apolitical) and nothing else that's not a political stance.
outime··on I Love MDN, or the cult of the free in action
There are NGOs that don't take public stances, you just have to look out for them (depends on your country as well I guess?). It's fine if you want to accept everyone is corrupt and will have hidden causes ("that's naive") but I don't and other people share this.

>Or do you want them to share your political alignment, and in that way be non-controversial?

Please stop these kind of assumptions - it just feels childish. I don't want political stances of any kind from an organization that's getting my money to make a specific thing better.

If I was to donate to MDN to make docs better, I don't want stances on far-right or far-left. I want my money to be used to produce better documentation, period.

outime··on I Love MDN, or the cult of the free in action
I'm not OP but I think you're reading between the lines. I feel OP though - I'd donate to a cause if my money doesn't go towards political alignments of any kind. I'm tired of NGOs or similar entities taking stances over stuff I didn't ask for. I just want them to do one thing, who gave you permission to use my donation to do a completely different thing, even if well intentioned?
outime··on Breaking into ASOS
When reading the title I literally thought someone managed to break into asos.com (the clothing store) as the branding itself is also in capital letters and everything.
outime··on Facebook hate-speech boycott had little effect on revenue
It's often journalists the ones blowing dumb stuff out of proportion because an article about a couple people saying outrageous stuff (even if it's the ~0.0001% of the population that you state) brings eyeballs and keeps the addictive outrageous cycle up. It's the sad state of social networks and most of the journalism nowadays. Luckily you're not forced to read any of those if you don't want.
outime··on Apple does not keep the 30% commission on a refund
With restrictions I meant if you want to distribute your apps in iOS, you must use the App Store and pay your fee (the yearly one as well). What other option do you have right now? None, and that's why devs are there right now.
outime··on Apple does not keep the 30% commission on a refund
It's good to see that a chunk of HN (the ones who upvote/downvote, including myself) see that HN is formed by humans and therefore it has its own biases and that fake news aren't an external evil that can't just appear here.

That being said, if we dig a bit this also shows how Apple is being seen as a bit of a villain by many people (again, including myself) nowadays and had no problems believing Apple was doing this because it pretty much aligns with their IMHO abusive practices when it comes to grabbing money from devs.

Apple will keep selling and having some bad PR isn't going to affect sales much I guess but I can't stop thinking that some day some competitor will show up, or some law will change and they'll be forced to lift the app store restrictions and most of the devs will fly. Maybe it's time for Apple to start considering reducing the greediness with the people who make their platform attractive when these kind of news pass all filters, even in communities like this.

outime··on Svelte and TypeScript
It definitely was my #1 reason and I'm happy to see this announcement. I'll check Svelte out soon as it already looked quite promising to me.
outime··on Show HN: Primo – all-in-one IDE, CMS, component library, static site generator
At least for some people, not everything is about making money and in our field there are plenty of examples.
outime··on PG: The biggest source of stress for me at YC was running HN
>Of course I don't want to generalize, but

But you did, and it makes me sad to see the testosterone blaming stuff here.

To be honest, I do remember online communities being much nicer back then (we're talking 14 years ago here) but things have changed a lot. I feel like strong moderation and guidelines work great (see HN where discussions are mostly civilized) instead of blaming half of the world population from an individual observation which can quickly be debunked by visiting any female-only forum or subreddit in 2020 for example.
