ourcat··on Watchy: Hackable $50 Smartwatch
> It works well as an isolated handheld ESP32 development platform.

Exactly this. It's great for learning.

I feel that once I get my head around things like lvgl and TFT touchscreens on this 'platform', then I should be able to do any type of (touch)screen UI. eg: 3D printers and other devices.

ourcat··on Watchy: Hackable $50 Smartwatch
I have a couple of the £30 LilyGo 'TTGO T-Watch 2020' ESP32 based 'watches'. Lots of fun to tinker with and has a colour TFT touchscreen which introduced me to the very impressive lvgl library to create UI. But the battery life is not great (though that teaches you how to write and use deep sleep modes).

An e-ink display would naturally help with the battery life, but the screen refresh times can be an issue for some ideas beyond telling the time.

ourcat··on Create animated GIF and WebP from videos using FFmpeg
Also, twitter and Facebbok convert uploaded GIFs to video.
ourcat··on A Minimal Email Client
I once built an email client in (JSP-generated) WML for the first WAP phones.

It doesn't get less minimal than that ;)

ourcat··on Quitting Twitter
You should create a new blog category, containing only posts with titles up to 280 characters and just post the tidbits you'd otherwise post to Twitter. Styled accordingly.

If worthy enough, you could even share the link to any one of them on Twitter. ;)

ourcat··on Implementing "defer"
My point was about the wording in the title here, before I clicked on to the article.

It was by then reading said article when I saw it was about Go and not JS loading. :)

ourcat··on Implementing "defer"
Might be useful to mention '.. in Go' in the title.

I clicked on it with the assumption it was about loading resources in `script` tags with the defer or async attributes.

ourcat··on Stop Using Icon Fonts
That's right. `em`, `rem` or `px`.
ourcat··on Stop Using Icon Fonts
Useful for supporting `font-size` too, when inline with text (eg: for a label/button with an icon).
ourcat··on Htmx 1.2.0 Release
I've just learned over the years that it can be ultimately painful to rely on a third-party API. For all sorts of reasons.

I used the words "If I can" on purpose. So yes, if I could, I would invent my own.

And the peace of mind, and hopeful reliability that can provide, can go a long way in your creative mindset.

ourcat··on Htmx 1.2.0 Release
I agree.

I'm less worried about abstractions than I am about dependencies.

Which is why I use the foundational core knowledge to build my own solutions/modules. If I can.

ourcat··on Htmx 1.2.0 Release
I like the idea and applaud the effort. But surely it's just abstracting and implementing Javascript and thus obfuscating the knowledge of how that works.

I see this happen too often.

But then, some people know how to fix a car. Others don't even know how to pop the hood. And this sort of thing is likely why.

ourcat··on Strategies to Reduce Brain Fog and Improve Clear Thinking
I wouldn't touch Ketamine. Too many bad side-effects.

I've always had a high pain-threshold, but recently I've been 'beside myself' with pain (and a ringing in the ears, driving me mad at night, at times). Cannabinoids have been hugely helpful.

Thankfully, I have managed to get an appointment with the dentist next week. But I've had to wait longer than I wanted for it.

Years ago, I snapped my leg in half. Tibia and Fibula cleanly snapped. Had Titanium plates put in. That was easier to deal with than dental pain. ;)

ourcat··on Strategies to Reduce Brain Fog and Improve Clear Thinking
As someone dealing with some painful dental issues during lockdown over the past few months, I have to say, I approve of the endocannabinoid approach.

ourcat··on Strategies to Reduce Brain Fog and Improve Clear Thinking
Oddly, I've just found this concept to be analogous to many other 'ills' we face as humans. And not just the physical ones.

Sometimes we just want to stop feeling pain.

Sometimes we feel the need to try and stop the cause of it.

ourcat··on Strategies to Reduce Brain Fog and Improve Clear Thinking
True. An analgesic drug will help cope with the pain caused by inflammation, but an anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen will reduce the cause of the pain.
ourcat··on Strategies to Reduce Brain Fog and Improve Clear Thinking
You should take Ibuprofen for inflammation. Paracetamol is 'just' an analgesic.
ourcat··on Calvin and Hobbes Search Engine
You can change that in the php.ini to set the levels of Warnings/Errors to show if you want to. (And also naturally the MySQL config, to allow more connections)

But if you were the developer of this code, it's useful to pinpoint what went wrong and where.

This is a common "HN Hug-of-Death" ;)

ourcat··on Amsterdam displaces London as Europe's top stocks centre after Brexit
Over here in the UK, "French Fries" came over from America with fast food restaurants in the 80s.

Outside of those places, we call them "Chips" - though they tend to be a lot fatter than 'fries'.

And then 'Chips' is the American name for what we call 'Crisps'.

You say potato, I say potato, etc. ;)

ourcat··on Amsterdam displaces London as Europe's top stocks centre after Brexit
Also very popular in Belgium.

Similarly, I wonder if the word "again" in the MAGA slogan had the same effect?
ourcat··on Email from Jeff Bezos to employees
Also Microsoft's "Internet Explorer" at the time became so popular due to the word 'Internet' compared to a 'Netscape'. So many non-technical people just thought that was the 'way in' when they bought their first PC.

I was going to mention Shadow. I see quite a few people who want to play PCVR games using it if they don't have a PC up to the job.

Also with VR, many people use 'VirtualDesktop' to link between a PC and the Oculus Quest wirelessly. I can see a future where they offer remote PCs to connect via their software too.

And to add to that, in the future too, I can see Facebook/Oculus adding 5G connectivity to a next-generation headset alongside a future Snapdragon XR2(+).

ourcat··on JaaS: The team that builds Jitsi can now also run it for you
I'd never heard of Daily.co before. Looks great! Nice work.

I'm about to start building out an idea I've had based on WebRTC/MediaSoup/nginx-RTMP and ffmpeg. (But not for 'live' video calls though).

And having just seen your Jobs page, I think I might drop you guys a line, once I've got something working. ;)

ourcat··on Taboola to go public at $2.6B valuation
Maybe I should have said 'via' Google.
ourcat··on Suspended from Google Play for listing supported subtitle formats
And the Arsenal pocketwatch.
ourcat··on Taboola to go public at $2.6B valuation
I'd say it's more like they're getting search data from Google.

eg: I search on some medical condition (which I might or might not have) and the next thing I know, all Taboola 'chumbox' blocks are littered with 'ads' (which aren't ads that 'sell' anything) about said condition. Just extremely low quality links with zero value.

ourcat··on Malware found on laptops given out by government
The company behind "Geo" (which doesn't seem to show up in Companies House searches) is called 'Tactus Ltd. / Tactus Group'.
