ottoflux··on Is it classist to be against fast fashion?
quite simply no. fast fashion is not a requirement for decent inexpensive clothes.
ottoflux··on Lowbar – The simplest no-nonsense loading bar for Python
I love this. One tiny thought - perhaps use a conditional when setting the string percentage/completion value to prepend a 0 of it's < 10?

like: completion_string: str = '0' + str(self.completion) if self.completion < 10 else str(self.completion)

basically it would keep your bar from shifting when percentage goes from single digit to double digit.

ottoflux··on Ask HN: What does Full-Stack Developer even mean?
A useful conversation.

I majored in CS 24 years ago (am I old now?) and have had my fingers and toes just about everywhere in the last few decades.

I think your definition is pretty good but I think the primary question/problem is that too many people who don't really understand what it means just throw it around — especially in management/hiring/hr/etc.

At the end of the day, if you wanted to be nit-picky the response would be "what stack?" because no one is the master of all stacks and all things. I have worked with some amazingly talented people in my career and everyone has gaps, unless you're constantly learning and never building.

Maybe the real question/concern is that they're going to expect you to do N jobs and only pay for 1.

What you should really look for when you hire people isn't what they claim to know and ace on a "is X a native type in Y?" they question but instead how they think and how they can learn. Developers who are curious and want to learn are far better imo than ones that claim they know everything.

ottoflux··on How to Work Hard
or, you know, work hard when it's work time and take a life balance. your company isn't going to come to raise your children (if you have them) when you die, nor are they going to live a happy life for you.

we have to stop thinking exploiting ourselves for someone else's gain makes us a better person.

i'm not saying the author says the opposite, but i think in any discussion of hard work we need to bring up balance. a good part of Bill Gates success was the money infusion from his friends and a wildly asymmetrical deal with IBM and the writer of DOS on the other side.

if we don't take a more nuanced approach we are (intentionally or not) perpetuating the myth of sacrificing your life for your company. i did that with my 20s and a chunk of my 30s. would not recommend. live your life, you only get one trip through and sometimes the body doesn't hold up well enough to keep enjoying all the things you love.

But does it still whip the llama's ass?
ottoflux··on Focusmate – Virtual Coworking Helps You Get Things Done
TL/DR: Book appointments on your calendar to get work done and stick to them. Shut off notifications while you're in there.

I've been working from home for a decade now, and basically I think this is bonkers (no offense, I see the founder is here posting). With all the tools out there if you really want to do that pair up with a coworker and do it with an existing tool. I don't work in pajamas or do anything dumb but I have zero (0) interest in having someone I don't even work with having a video feed into my house. That's as a man, don't even get me started on how uncomfortable I'd be if I wasn't a cis / straight guy.

ottoflux··on Show HN: Time stamps for your phone or computer
It still needs cleaned up, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway. Been fiddling with it, but I find it useful.

ottoflux··on Your App Is Not Better than an Open Protocol
True - and hopefully you'll keep that up with your new site/app once marketers, CFOs, and investors get involved, I think that's when things start growing walls and controls. As soon as someone mentions "monetization," hopefully it's only explored as charging your users a reasonable rate for a good service.
ottoflux··on Google Play Store: Browsing with Firefox is no longer supported on Android
wow. hope --Maemo--, er... --Meego--, er... Tizen can gel, or I guess we can wait on Firefox OS to show up on a device that isn't terrible in the US.
ottoflux··on I'm getting screwed with my stock options
Shit happens. Refactoring options and shifting things around may suck, but it may have been a requirement of them getting the seed funding. 100% of your options at Zero worth are worse than N% (not a terrible N%) at an actual positive valuation.

I'm not familiar with EU tax rates on short term capital gains in a US market, and would highly recommend spending some of the money you might have spent on a lawyer talking to a reputable financial accountant from your country with experience in this area. In the US you have to set aside a chunk of the proceeds if you do a same day sale when you exercise your options, and are frequently penalized by your state if you don't give them their share at the end of that financial quarter.

There's a lot going on there and I don't think HN is going to give you complete enough advice to rest your mind.

ottoflux··on Fast-food worker replacement machine
How does this fix the fast food problem? 1) Who will clean the machines well every night? 2) Really? Try to answer 1 honestly. 3) How will keep the tables clean, as well as the messes from terrible idiot customers who no longer believe they should clean up a mess they make (at least partially until getting help from employee)? 4) When I mean clean, I don't mean rubbing the table with microquat (or equivalent) and knocking the food and crumbs all over the seating surface. I mean cleaning it so that you would comfortably (and by you I mean more than 50 % of the people) lick the surface of the table. It takes hot soapy water, effort, and technique - all things that seem to be missing from restaurants (fast and many not-so-fast). 5) Terrible mopping, etc.

The big problem isn't keeping cheap sh*tty food cheap, it's keeping the restaurants clean enough you don't feel dirty when you leave. That is a social and managerial problem, and you don't fix it with magical meat grinder machine.

ottoflux··on Show HN: Gmelius – No Ads and Better User Interface for Gmail
so?

seriously. it does a better job than an old nx mbox, or other technology. i'm not trying to say it's not better, it's just amazing how impatient we've gotten in the last decade, and how much we've bought into "googlethink"

ottoflux··on Network Solutions' DNS was down
Back up.
ottoflux··on Apple ignores bug report
1) Yes, Apple is closed and lame. This isn't new.

2) I almost fell over laughing when you mentioned a whole "40" hours. I think if I went through that whole process with Apple, I'd be happy if I got it out of the way in 40 hours.

Apple "used to" (as in, they cast a damn good image of) following Dieter Rams type of design philosophy, but that's long gone in the freak show app-orgy that exists within iOS now. It's a mess, it's terribly disorganized, it's not "less, but better" it's "more, and worse".

Personally, I'm surprised that they let iOS get this stale. But apparently as long as the penumbra of Steve's[RIP] reality distortion field exists, they will blindly march on.

What Apple needs is a new visionary. Not someone to try to emulate Steve Jobs. And they need to open the hell out of their products.

If you believe your hardware and OS are best, then open the hardware to letting people install Android on it if they don't agree, and write a version of iOS to run on other hardware.

It's not going to happen (and I hope they prove me wrong). Apple is designed as a coupled HW-SW ship, and I don't see them changing course any time soon.

My advice: Pay attention to your perspective bed partners before you commit and get into bed with them.
