otar··on PostgREST: REST API for any Postgres database
I've been witness of a fully functional http client wrapper written in PL/SQL on Oracle. It's been working very well on REST and SOAP APIs. Codebase was a mission critical system for a large financial organization.

Development soeed was advantage, but the trade-off was that the good database developer skill is still rare and you had to grow and teach other [junior] devs for years. They used to stick with the team much longer time than the average developer, but still I believe it is a disadvantage.

What about PostgREST, the biggest issue I have with it is a DB server being available publicly in the net, I usually try my best to either place DB servers in the private network or "hide" them.

Other than this argument, it's a pleasure to develop on that low level. SQL is an important skill and it's strange why so many devs know it superficially.

PHP 6? :) It never got released...
otar··on 2020's fastest-rising tech jobs? Programming language PHP leads the way
It's not a surprise at all.

Firstly, PHP has always been around, WordPress based websites still have like 1/3 share of all existing websites.

Secondly, in the recent years it got a very mature language, got loads of improvements and performance optimizations. With PHP 8 being planned to be released by the end of this year, it will be another major step forward.

Thirdly, Laravel, Symfony and other open source stuff are awesome.

I think if PHP does a major comeback as a decent platform for development and somehow gets rid of the undeserved reputation, those PHP devs who stayed with PHP and didn't switch to RoR, Django, Node or other platforms will be winners, including me :)

otar··on Good sleep, good learning, good life
TL;DR: No alarm clock. Follow needs of your body, sleep as much as you need. Free running sleep has no alternative.

It's been a while when I first read this excellent article, I always try to follow the advice about free running sleep since then.

otar··on Finally, I Closed My LinkedIn
I can freely attribute my previous and current job, as well as my current partnership (emerged from the current job) to LinkedIn. I've been reached out by recruiters both times and apparently it did work out.

From another POV I understand the criticism, it's been a while I haven't visited LinkedIn, nor have I updated the profile, and it's mostly caused by the "noise" I feel on social networks. But, it still can be beneficial for some professionals at a certain phase of their career.

otar··on Ask HN: Has anybody shipped a web app at scale with 1 DB per account?
In my case this worked out pretty well. Other than data separation and ease of scaling database per-customer (they might have different behavior of read/write operations), they other benefit was that we could place customer's database in any jurisdiction, which for some enterprise customers appeared an important point, regulations wise...
otar··on Startups from Y Combinator’s S19 Demo Day 1
Indeed there's a need... We were putting common SQL queries in the code repository for later copy-pasting in the past, but we stopped doing that when we discovered Metabase (https://metabase.com/). I believe it will be relatively hard for PopSQL to compete with it, since Metabase is light ears ahead as of now.
otar··on Why is airline food so bad?
Praise to Emirate Airlines. My best flight experience was with them. I can confirm that their food in the economy class was pretty good, in comparison to other airlines they were serving the real meal.
otar··on How We Make Money at Stack Overflow
I have tweeted about SO several minutes ago before I discovered this topic on HN: https://twitter.com/otarch/status/798647799411675136

StackOverflow is so powerful resource on the Internet, alongside with Wikipedia and Internet Archive.

I wish I could donate two ways: 1) Yearly or monthly (subscription) donations, like on Wikipedia 2) I would be extremely happy to donate authors of some great, life-saving answers. I feel so excited when I find the right answer after searching a solution for hours.

Just shut up and take my money!

otar··on NPM v4.0.0
Yarn may be something worth investing time in, but in the announcement blog post I found this part exceedingly ridiculous:

"The easiest way to get started is to run: npm install -g yarn"

otar··on Dell’s Skylake XPS 13, Precision workstations now come with Ubuntu preinstalled
One tiny detail that bothers me is that there's a Windows logo on the keyboard. It could be Tux or Ubuntu logo.

Tux Penguin sticker solved my problem on my XPS 13, but would be nice to see it coming out of the box.

otar··on How to Install Ubuntu Linux on your Dell PC
Note: I have a late 2013 edition, Sputnik 3, there's a newer - 2015 edition which has a much better battery life from what I've read.

On average lasts ~7 hours, less if you're watching a video.

Yes, sleep/wake up is working as expected.

I myself was very impressed when I got the laptop, I didn't expect such beautiful and fine tuned laptop from Dell.

otar··on How to Install Ubuntu Linux on your Dell PC
I'm very happy that I bought Dell XPS 13 (aka Sputnik 3) instead of MacBook Air.

There were some problems regarding driver support thought... but in the latest Ubuntu 15.04 most of them, maybe even all of them, are gone.

I've been using it for almost 1.5 years and can't recommend it higher.

Congrats!

This product is amazing, had something like this in mind for a long and couldn't find a proper implementation.

I would be glad to pay reasonable price for such service.

Localhost/native version is a killer feature. Don't drop it! If you open source the code I'll be glad to contribute...
