otabdeveloper4··on Why My Father Is Wrong: A Defense of Guitar Hero
It's a reaction. Nobody would be "anti-AI" if AI wasn't being shoved into everything while at the same time shaming you like you're stupid for not enjoying literal slop.
otabdeveloper4··on The Nixpkgs core team has disbanded
> Containers do solve dependency hell by isolation.

Only if they isolate each atomic package individually. Which is exactly what Nix is and what Docker isn't.

otabdeveloper4··on No one can afford to make Myst games anymore

It's not and never will be.

otabdeveloper4··on No one can afford to make Myst games anymore
AI slop is cringe and bad. (From an artistic point of view.)

You can't force people to like it.

otabdeveloper4··on The Nixpkgs core team has disbanded
Containers don't solve dependency hell. They just give you a standard way to ship your bespoke bash scripts.

If you like writing bash scripts then go for it. (Personally I'd rather be doing literally anything else, like, I don't know, shoveling manure.)

Sorry buddy, next time I won't ask for permission. I don't care what you allow.

otabdeveloper4··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
That's a software engineering problem. They just need to figure out how to fine-tune for alignment and tool usage.

That's the only thing the normie consumer cares for really.

otabdeveloper4··on Born Against, or why hobby programming communities are against LLM usage
> LLMs expedite achieving the end result.

Yes if your end result is technical debt and endless bullshit. (Some enterprise environments do be like that.)

otabdeveloper4··on Anthropic Is Building Its Own Chip
They should vibe code it and see how it goes.
otabdeveloper4··on Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI
> Lines of code are akshually a good metric now, because that's the only metric LLMs can optimize and I really, really, really love LLMs, they're the bee's knees.

Really now?

otabdeveloper4··on Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI
> It is mostly about requirements and goals and architecture/design

People vibe code because they have no clue about any of that. Not because they're slow typers.

otabdeveloper4··on Amazonian civilization had estimated 3M people in 3% of forest area
a) There's way more grassland in the world than forests. (On all continents.)

b) Cows walk as they graze, the meat even delivers itself. You just need a herder.

Shrimple as. The scheme worked for millennia with zero problems. Nobody had a problem with beef production until tariffs and other fuckery was invented.

But apparently we need to switch to eating bugs instead of fixing the root of the problem. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

otabdeveloper4··on Study uncovers lost 'golden age' of languages
> as God provides Cain with protection via the mark that he placed on Cain

Exactly, and yet he still built a walled city. Why? For the same reason why Adam and Eve suddenly realized they were naked after falling from grace.

P.S. Neither Roman Catholics nor Protestants have anything approaching a standard Christian exegesis. Both traditions are way out there and are diverging significantly from Christianity.

otabdeveloper4··on Amazonian civilization had estimated 3M people in 3% of forest area
> and clearing for beef production

I know the real point is that you'd prefer we eat the proverbial bugs, but there's akshually more grassland in the world than forest.

You don't need to cut down trees for beef production - it doesn't make any economic sense unless your logistics costs are deliberately screwed by perverse government incentives.

otabdeveloper4··on Study uncovers lost 'golden age' of languages
> That is a very idiosyncratic interpretation of the tables of patriarchs in Genesis.

No, it's the standard Christian exegesis.

otabdeveloper4··on Fasttracker II clone in C using SDL 2
PCs and consoles back in the day used to have actual hardware synthesizers to play music. (Wild!)

Synthesizers are real musical instruments, so game designers actually had to compose and arrange musical pieces for them!

Today it's just pre-recorded sounds, nobody needs to actually craft special game music.

P.S. Having a dedicated synthesizer instrument isn't a limitation. It was a cost-saving measure back at the time, but it's a special separate custom chip that we don't get to have anymore.

otabdeveloper4··on Study uncovers lost 'golden age' of languages
You're possibly misreading that.

In the Bible the city builder was Cain, and he built it because he was a criminal and needed protection from the world when he lost God's grace.

I.e., the message is that a city is a kind of protective exoskeleton or "safe space" when man becomes estranged from God (the Universe).

It's a story about man's fragility and ultimate futility.

otabdeveloper4··on After the AI Crash
Yes, not using AI will be a big competitive advantage for junior programmers.
otabdeveloper4··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2012)
IMO "chords" is the wrong word to use here, because chords are a fingering technique for polyphonic instruments. (So, guitar, piano, accordion, and ... that's it?)

What I mean is voice leading and counterpoint - once you have a filter sweep as an instrument you now need to deliberately avoid all that when composing.

People act as if these Western music theory concepts are grand universals, but they're really just useful conventions for the particular music instruments common at the time. They're not even universal for all of Western music; when the instruments evolved so did the conventions and the "theory".

otabdeveloper4··on After the AI Crash
> what is going to happen to the job market during and the years following the crash

Junior programmers will be in demand again. Someone will have to fix the mountains of vibe coded technical debt.

otabdeveloper4··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2012)
Metal music is mostly minor.

Does metal sound "sad"? Opinions differ. :)

otabdeveloper4··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2012)
"Western electronic music" is anything that uses an instrument with a filter cutoff knob.

Filter knobs and polyphony don't play together well.

That's why they gravitate towards "leads" or "pads" over a separate bass or percussion track. Unlike normal Western polyphony you want the two to NOT form chords or counterpoint.

otabdeveloper4··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2012)
No, in electronic music harmonic progressions are done by manipulating timbre.

Try it yourself - play one note on repeat and start twirling the cutoff knob.

otabdeveloper4··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2012)
Chariots of Fire is pretty dope.
otabdeveloper4··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2012)

Like Western electronic music written after 1960, for example. :)

(And electronic music is, like, basically all we have today.)
