osullip··on Show HN: Generate JSON mock data for testing/initial app development
Is there a generator for all the JSON generators out there?

https://json-generator.com/ https://www.objgen.com/json/local/design https://www.atatus.com/tools/json-generator https://www.site24x7.com/tools/json-generator.html

Not discounting the effort it takes to build a tool like this. It has, however, been done to death.

osullip··on Climate records tumble, leaving Earth in uncharted territory – scientists
That's a good point.

We are not turning back the systems that will heat the world.

If we approach it as a local challenge, there is a chance we can invent new ways to deal with it.

Maybe instead of this being the end, it could be a beginning of new science and development that counters the negative impacts of change.

Maybe, just maybe, we can get some good out of it.

osullip··on MDN can now automatically lie to people seeking technical information
I cannot see anywhere that MDN say the explanation might be wrong.
osullip··on Australia legalises psychedelics for mental health
>Are psychiatrists supposed to order MDMA/psilocybin directly from the companies that produce the two for research use,

As I understand it, yes.

Legalisation hasn't meant it has gone mainstream.

It is still going to be administered in very selective cases where the current range of medication and therapy has not been effective.

It may only be tens or low hundreds of people who receive these treatments in the first year.

The efficacy of the treatment will be monitored and the hope is that these patients outcomes are positive, which will add to the body of work supporting MDMA/psilocybin as an antidepressant.

osullip··on In praise of blowing up your life
Same here. I moved to Australia from London via a 9 year stint in Dublin.

The Irish accepted me, despite the English connection. I made some very good friends but now have lost contact with all but one.

I moved to Brighton in Melbourne 10 years ago and it's a much harder nut to crack. The people here went to prep, primary, secondary school together. Probably university too. I'm an outsider looking in despite volunteering and doing all the rest.

"Blowing up" and moving back to the UK or Ireland is tempting but I would need to start it all again.

I think I'll stay. Maybe I'll crack these nuts one day and have roots.

osullip··on Ask HN: How did you rebuild yourself after having hit rock bottom?
You are standing in front of a massive pile of broken glass. It hurts like no one ever told you it would. To lose a women that you thought you would spend the rest of your life with hurts. It's hard. But you reached out. You know it's going to be hard and you asked the world for help. There are people all over that will be there for you. It's funny how many you find when you need them.
osullip··on Why is remote work seen as a gift?
I've done it for close to a decade.

Just before COVID, I had enough of the isolation, lack of contact with my team and working outside of the rest of the world's flow.

COVID forced another 2 years of it on me.

Now I work in a bar to meet people and do all the human contact things.

I write software 3 days a week, still remote, and enjoy the balance.

osullip··on Show HN: DocsGPT, open-source documentation assistant, fully aware of libraries
I agree.

But the problem will be solved regardless of GPT.

I don't think the whole stack relies on GPT for this solution.

Some parts maybe, but the whole of the project is more than that.

osullip··on Show HN: DocsGPT, open-source documentation assistant, fully aware of libraries
I will support and pay for this project.

I thought about the same problem. Companies have lots of marketing material and data sheets that are not easily queried but would be very useful to support staff when dealing with customer's questions.

I didn't build it, they did. They get my support.

osullip··on Ask HN: What is your experience in tech consulting?
First, you are somebody. You have more skills in your area of expertise than anyone else you will meet.

My first clients came from volunteering at the local football club. As others have said, connections matter.

Do what doesn't scale. But don't do it for free.

osullip··on Ask HN: What is your experience in tech consulting?
I run a consulting firm.

Get one client. Do an amazing job. Use that to tell other clients what you do.

Be specific. Most people outside tech have no idea how it works. Tell them what they will get.

Increased sales, reduced costs, better productivity. Whatever it is you do, forget about the tech and talk about the benefits.

Get your elevator pitch right. Mine is "I help businesses fix their procedures". People then say "You know, I could introduce you to my friend...."

Business first, tech last.

osullip··on U.S. gov't announces intent to slash citizenship renunciation fee by four-fifths
They will also be able to apply for you to become citizens when they turn 21 via an Alien Relative Petition.

They will likely not pay much tax between now and then so the cost of the opportunity (if you would ever consider living in the U.S. permanently) is minimal.

osullip··on U.S. gov't announces intent to slash citizenship renunciation fee by four-fifths
Citizenship of all countries comes with some rules and expectations on the holder.

In some cases it is national service, others it is a requirement to vote, in the U.S. case it is to declare and pay taxes.

I would expect that most people like the idea of the option to live and work in the U.S. and keep their citizenship even if not residing there.

I think it is a difficult call to renounce citizenship but if the tax requirements are onerous on the individual they are least have the choice.

osullip··on Merry Christmas, HN
We also do a lot of beach going.

It still feels crazy for me to be in shorts and putting the barbie on to cook some steaks.

While the northern hemisphere have a celebration in the middle of winter, the young here are preparing for festival season and are on summer school holidays until end of January.

osullip··on Explaining machine learning pitfalls to managers (2019)
"The only way to do this is to hire an army of native language speakers and ask them to manually recognize text in a collection of audio files"

This is where I often get to when thinking about ML or AI (or AGI).

We do so much training to make systems predictive. I think it is unlikely that we can ever train it so much that it it can become predictive on its own.

As said in other comments, going from 80 to 90% accuracy is a big step. 90 to 95%? Thats too much to ask.

osullip··on Pwned, the book
There are many books that are compilations of articles and blog posts.

I've read several. I had never read the original posts and found it quite enjoyable. Short, sharp chapters that are easy to pick up and put down.

I'm not sure it's low effort. There is effort spent writing the original posts and then reviewing and compiling them into a cohesive narrative.

osullip··on So you want to be a consultant? (2005)
>Dealing with taxes, invoices, customer demands, etc

The best thing I have done is to put systems in place to handle these, often paid for SAAS services.

Use a good project management tool to track time (Basecamp, Teamwork).

Pay for an accounting package (Xero, MYOB, Wave for US and Canada) and use automated follow up (Debtor Daddy).

Use a ticketing system (Zendesk, Freshdesk, Hubspot)

Use a calendar booking system (Calendly)

Train your customers to contact you through those means.

Use Zapier to tie everything together.

Probably $200 a month - or two hours work out of a possible 120 billable hours (I work on 30 hours billable a week).

Spend some money on a good virtual assistant. They will save your life.
