orwin··on US removes Syria from terrorism sponsor list, lifting major investment obstacle
He won the civil war, that's where he gets his legitimity. No terrorist attacks since 2015, and even then the terrorist group leaders said it wasn't on their orders. No transnational terrorism is also a good sign. The Kurds were very skeptical a year ago, and probably afraid too, but from the little I heard, they seem relieved about what is currently happening (Lebanese too, I don't have close friends in other related communities). I know the SDF would be a better winner overall, but you have to make with what you get.

Also the Kurd I know have family in the Hatay province and around idil, so he is _very_ confident that economically at least it will be a success.

And like I said elsewhere, you can see the Turkish/ottoman Sunni influence in his religion (in islam culture and religion are extremely close), which is a very good sign. And concerning the massacre: we mostly forgot about Smyrna, and even Dersim isn't cited when we talk about Atatürk (both at least one order of magnitude bigger). It is very sad, but at the time European powers wanted stability in the area, and Atatürk gave them that. I only wish for the war to end and to have the area stabilise, and unlike Iran or even Irak, I see a slight chance that that it might end correctly for the minorities (10%?). Which isn't much, but I would rather wait a year or two before casting judgment.

Talibans are the obvious counter-example. No, the reason they might be less corrupt than the average dictator in the area is that they seem to have a plan, and until it is implemented, we can expect the leaders to behave.

Also culturally, Syrian are very close to Turks and benefitted a lot from ottoman administration and Sunni legalism, which is a big reason why I believe it is possible for them to have a (mostly) secular government. Sadly I think it is likely they will implement a dual government like Iran had, a theocracy with a democratically elected secular government. Which are more resilient, but bad news overall (still better than Assad regime tbh).

orwin··on US removes Syria from terrorism sponsor list, lifting major investment obstacle
Please let's wait and see a bit before judging him a 'fundamentalist'.

He joined Al-Qaida when he was young, during the US invasion of Iraq, and spent years in a US prison where he grew his network, link to a particular faction of Al-Qaida that isn't that religious (ok, Islam is weird and way too hard to explain in a digression, let's leave it at 'not that religious' to avoid a 500 lines tunnel).

Kurds were extremely skeptical at first, but it seems at least some are happy with how things are proceeding (they are more involved than expected in drafting the new constitution that will take place in 2030).

It might sadly go to a dual government like Iran use to have before 2026, which is hurting my atheist self, but let's be honest, a dual government in the region is way, way more democracy than expected.

orwin··on AI is hitting entry-level jobs hardest, Stanford study finds
In my experience in the past year, new hires, juniors or mid-level programmers (probably even "seniors") who use AI to contribute quickly have a big issue of now ownership or understanding of the code and of the issues that we might encounter. They contribute very little during meeting because they have trouble understanding the subject matter.

We are a network tooling team, and now we think our next hire will be a young network engineer who probably will generate code that we will have to review carefully, but we have to do that anyway, because we can't really afford having our engineers stuck on a basic knowledge of networking issues.

In any case, thanks to AI everything have a SDK so we won't have to make in-house library to automate everything (thousand of hours making libraries for cisco, forti, zscalers and other lost, but to be honest, good riddance), so the demand for engineers in my situation will decrease.

orwin··on Early Humans Likely Ate Carbs and Sugary Foods
To nitpick: at rest, muscle cells use fat over carbs to produce ATP. It is only during effort that the cells start to use more carbs than fat. The rest of the post is, to my understanding, correct.
orwin··on A week of using Codex more than Claude
And the way they are written is rather unhelpful: '//this not cosmetic: this css helps the user understand where he should click'. The 'this is not' pattern is useless at best.
orwin··on New Casio F-B100W – Upgrade to the iconic F-91W after 40 years
If it's like the G-Shock, it's not a real step counter, it's a small accelerometer. It will trigger on every single wave when you're planing if you're windsurfing, which makes it quite useless.
orwin··on Casio F-B100W-1A
On the principal menu of my G-Shock, I have the time on ~80% of the screen. The rest is 8/19, WED and the seconds. Of course the time is smaller when I go to the tide screen.
orwin··on Proposal to prohibit vibe coded projects from being hosted on Sourcehut
Look at what happens in codeberg. Small non-commercial, AI driven and even vibe-coded projects are still on the platform. I don't care about what people say, I care about how they act. And to me, codeberg act appropriately.
orwin··on Proposal to prohibit vibe coded projects from being hosted on Sourcehut
I like codeberg approach. If you're a small project that doesn't spam ( a commit a day, a few PR a day) you can be as vibe-coded as you want despite their 'guidelines'.
orwin··on Proposal to prohibit vibe coded projects from being hosted on Sourcehut
> These folks aren't ok

And people who feel entitled to free compute/storage are way worse.

orwin··on Proposal to prohibit vibe coded projects from being hosted on Sourcehut
Did you check the number of open PRs and commit/hour of vibecoded projects? If course they are banned from small community-funded hosts, they eat compute and data for free. Honestly, my vote would have been to make vibe-coded pay per commit, but I guess introducing money is taboo for those communities

Like I said on another topic: for the average man on earth, you're probably right, the carcinogenic effect of alcohol is smaller than eating red meat.

But if you are overweight or a preclinical obese, any amount of alcohol put you closer to clinical obesity.

orwin··on US announces new sanctions on top ICC figures
I'd rather have no overlord, but between China and the US, the one abusing its power to force deals since the 80s us obviously the worst.
orwin··on Health benefits of Tai Chi
Tai chi is pushed by a Chinese organisation considered as a dangerous sect by the CCP. Falong something, I can't remember, basically inheritors from a 1980-1990s movement.
orwin··on Government sponsored study on alcohol doesn't stand up to scrutiny
Just for the 'sugar is much more addictive/obesity kills more' crowd, I am an ex-obese.

Stopping alcohol as a precursor to my diet, to limit hormonal imbalance and reduce hunger pain helped more than anything else (even stopping sugar, which I already tried. I did both during my constant, 3 year calorie deficit, but only restarted one habit). We don't fully understand alcohol long term effect on leptin and ghrelin sensitivity, but we do understand their short term effect on leptin and ghrelin production, and alcohol is ten times worse than sugar for food cravings and hormonal balance.

So please stop. You don't know shit, and stop using obesity to make cheap, dumb internet point that are ultimately false.

orwin··on Gulf States Accept a New Normal in Hormuz: Iran Is in Control
China and Iran are the two oldest administrations in the world. What is interesting is even when conquered, as long as they aren't genocided/colonialized, administration transcend culture and religion (China is the best example for culture, Iran for religion). Everybody knows that Iran administration is stable. It survived two civil war within 30 years with at most moderate changes.
orwin··on France's tax authority had data stolen on 680k taxpayers
I worked as a temp for france tax collection before my degree (circa 2012-2013l.

People were registered in 3 different database, each of them independent, each of them on a different software (one aspnet/vbnet you connected through a browser, one very, very old, clearly IBM software, and the third one was probably as old as IBM, if not older, but looked like a minitel portage on windows). All the relevant data were dispersed on those three (a fourth one existed but only authorised people could use it because you had bank account numbers on it). Also, only the Vbnet software allowed copy paste, which means that to find someone, you had to file the tax number+surname 3 time, without making any mistake.

I wonder which one was broken into. No bank details, so it probably was one I had access to as a temp. Maybe they upgraded their software though, because if I remember correctly only they all worked on the local network (not sure about the aspnet one).

orwin··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
Rice is better than wheat or corn, just because of the fiber content and relatively low glycemic index.

Complete rice also carry lisine (although less than beans) which is a really hard amino acid to get on a vegetarian diet.

orwin··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
> The methane will eventually break down and be part of new plants

To be exact, excess methane go in the high troposphere, where it is broken down in CO2+H2O (the half life is very short, I don't remember which is which but it's either 5 or 20 years). So in any case, it accelerate climate change.

orwin··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
I know people who only eat chicken and beef, I'm pretty sure they need iodine way than you do. I don't have the issue, the main animal I eat (besides eggs and cheese) is fish, but I would bet you are healthier than a large part of omnivores.
orwin··on The SpaceX Sham
Really? i got out of the crypto/finance bubble a few years ago, but that feels heavily like a crypto scam. You create a coin, you keep a few, sell another few to influencers cheaply, then ICO, then profit.
orwin··on The US tried to stop cartel money-laundering; devastated mom-and-pop businesses
Nationalize businesses who get caught working with a permitless immigrant would be far, far more effective.

It ensure real checks, ensure that when the immigrant work permit expire, the employer have an incentive to help renew it (that alone ouwld probably solve 70 to 90% of illegal "aliens"

orwin··on France Bans Unsolicited Telemarketing Calls
I don't support it, but I will explain you why: you had three exceptions to bloctel: free formations, 'ma prime renov' (basically solar panels, insulation, heat pumps for homeowners), along with services for independent professional.

Which conveniently, target three really interesting segments: people looking for a job change, homeowners, and independent workers, who often don't have a secretary and get sold very expensive services by those companies (look "Sitbon enquete" to see more details if you wish).

Hopefully the new law don't have the same provisions.

Not saying this is it, but I never managed to block YouTube shorts with brave adblocker (in mobile), where I can do it with ublock. If you can do it, please explain, I promise I will try asap (I really dislike ff mobile UI).
orwin··on U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, a sudden reversal
https://www.migrantdeathmap.sg/inaccessible-healthcare

[Edit] btw I just talked to my sailor friend, I was wrong, it doesn't matter if you're a westerner or not, if you are a sailor or a docker in Singapore, you will have to pay from your own pocket for healthcare or get back home, same as UAE.

orwin··on Obviously, DOGE Did Not Save Money
I think you have to be more explicit because I don't understand fully what you mean.

Which fire department? Are you talking about doge? In your allegory, it more like: a firebomb caused 20 fires, and after a few nights, the fire department all quit, called it a 'success', flooded an area untouched by fire, and now the area have 25 fires and a flood. Also they paid themselves a bonus because of a job well done.

Which trim? Are you talking about the US balanced budget? Why is that setting goalposts? I mean, I personally don't care about a balanced budget, but budget hawks do, and doing it without reducing social aid seems like a good goalpost to have, no? Should we move them? If so, where?
