orsenthil··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits
I read books on the computer, with the help of llm that I can ask questions about the book. That's the best reading I have found working for me.
orsenthil··on How Uber Protects Against Retry Storms
It is similar writing an academic paper and getting it published. These blog post reflects on technical strength of the company, so it has to go through the vetting and approval before it gets out of the door, and intermediaries are added as authors.

In academic world, I hear, folks simply add the name of their professors due to their reputation. Of course, professors are putting their reputation at stake by giving a chance to the right students.

orsenthil··on Waymo in Singapore
> "forward deployed engineers"

What is a forward deployed engineer? Isn't it engineering still? Genuine question.

orsenthil··on Waymo in Singapore
Singapore is a controlled economy, and has a large workforce for Taxi Drivers and part-time drivers through Grab. I am not sure how the entrenchment of robotaxis like Waymo (and future tesla) is going to play with the general population. My guess, they will co-exist as the government wont jeopardize the living of the taxi-driver-complaining uncles.

Also, I notice a lot new SF based AI companies have started establishing their offices in Singapore too. Sierra, and Fireworks coming to my mind. As government plays a huge part in Singapore, I guess, government noticing these as necessary investments for the future of Singapore.

orsenthil··on Vinix – A modern operating system written in V
The book about the language was published by packt, and I had my eyebrows raised. I want to give a benefit of doubt tough and learn more.
orsenthil··on Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking
I am assuming these languages are present in translate.google.com If Google Gemini is good in languages other than English, while other models are not, then we can trace back it back to the translate.google.com as a resource as one possibility.
orsenthil··on People that worked on the same idea for decades
Wow!. Nice to meet you.
orsenthil··on People that worked on the same idea for decades
The quote by Hokusai is beautiful.

Algorithms books and material by Robert Sedgewick and Kevin Wayne is 40 year effort too.

Computer Networks, Operating Systems, Distributed Systems from Andrew Tanenbaum, same.

orsenthil··on Amazon Achieves Enshitification Inception
Yes, I agree with you. He is both real and it is depressing as the state of world is. I sometimes have take solace in utopian fiction like Kim Stanley Robinson's have my spirits high and have a positive look out. It is just me.
orsenthil··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
> The goal of this story and publishing it in HN seems to catch more eyeballs and marketing of Ankidroid, under new leadership

Ugly and wrong. I am sorry.

orsenthil··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
Oh I see. I mistook it then. Sorry, my bad.
orsenthil··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
Just remove the open collective link. Point to your homepage where the motivated donors will certainly pay. You already should know how many of the motivated users actually care about donations. The goal of this story and publishing it in HN seems to catch more eyeballs and marketing of Ankidroid, under new leadership. All I am suggesting is, just play along with Google. No harm here.

I am sorry, if I am wrong. Happy to be wrong too.

TIL that Humans have been around for more than 40,000 years! I thought we started around 1000s of BC.
orsenthil··on Automating Immersive Reading
This is excellent! I wanted this. I had noticed that Kindle had limited feature like this for certain books that support audiobooks. I had tried this style of reading with audiobook and ebook without a any automated sync, but hadn't pursued it. This looks cool. :)
orsenthil··on EVE Online moves to Python 3
> 50 uses of <>, a way of writing "not equal" so old that many working Python developers have never seen it.

This hit me. Not sure when this was used and was deprecated.

Strange. The picture of the jeep looks similar to the Omarchy Quatro Desktop wallpaper. Is there a connection? How come both look so similar?
orsenthil··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Yeah, but unintentionally. I think, you were being sarcastic with your comment. I am okay with it, since we both arrive at the same outcome.
orsenthil··on A Citation to Asimov
> Are there any current writers or public figures that have taken up the human-loving atheism of my youth?

Many. Kim Stanley Robinson for instance.

orsenthil··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Without question, Americans should have a say their democratic process and bring change when needed. They should never fall for the false narrative used to trick them.
orsenthil··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Artifact ?

What do you mean? I stated where I found this claim.

> Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism by Anne Case, and Angus Deaton.

And all the references it has.

orsenthil··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
> positive policy decision for both sides.

Actually not. Harmful for US. US gains for more from the skilled immigrants (at their cost).

orsenthil··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
I see a lot of comments in this thread in support this stance, as if that is something good for Americans, and say it is not a political statement.

One thing that changed my viewpoint was this book. Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism by Anne Case, and Angus Deaton.

In it, they make a point that, almost all US economists agree that immigration, both legal and Illegal Immigration, is not the cause for American working middle class failure. It is lack of education, and capitalistic system wherein rich steal the money from the poor, which is like a reverse robinhood.

Hacker news crowd can easily verify this by spot-checking. But still we fail for the false narrative and divisive exploits of immigration topic, which is certainly not aimed to solve the problem of American well-being at hand. Truth to be hold, politicians know this too.

orsenthil··on PageRank explained
Yes. I think, there used be a directory of a links published, like an index.
orsenthil··on Kobo can run apps now
This project inspires me to buy a Kobo. I am gravitating towards Kobo Libra color. Would that be a good choice ?
orsenthil··on Being ambitious and being a dad
The problem with that article is, it defines greatness with people who are popular on the Internet or have had a popular success.

For great parents, if you can think on your own, don't look further than your own parents. Did they something right.

orsenthil··on Show HN: Openleetcode – local LeetCode runner where tests live in the repo
Very cool. What motivated you to build this and what use case do you see for this project ?
orsenthil··on The Amazon tax
> Amazon makes enough in search ad revenue to give every single one of their employees a $35,000 cash bonus and still have change left over.

Theoretically. Amazon doesn't give a shit about well being or enrichment of it's employees. Every single one of the them. They tried to squeeze the productivity and since the Stock has been doing well, many employees have made a reasonable money. But forget the well being or profit sharing aspects with the employees.

orsenthil··on Working with AI Feels More Like Leadership Than Coding
This has been my case. I feel like I am ordering them to do task and verifying that they do exactly what I tell them to do. Rinse and repeat. My empty mind wanders off into thinking what task can I ask them to do.
