oropolo··on A Navy Seal's Semester at Yale, at Age 52
You might be surprised how "civilized" military members can be. Among their own and blowing off steam they will say things that will make the hair curl on most people... and then if you look around at the others it's obvious it's not said out of malice but is a mark of The Brotherhood. They have not only pledged their lives to serve and protect their bothers in arms, they have, in many cases, made good on that promise. Saying massively politically incorrect things -- even things that would sound hateful to an outsider -- is a strange way of showing affection. "I might think you're a blankety-blank blah-blah politically incorrect and mentally inferior example of humanity but I will give my life on the battlefield so that you can make it home, even if I don't make it back myself." For those who have not gone through such an experience, no amount of explanation is possible; for those who have, no explanation is necessary.

But around "normal people" you would never suspect what they've been through (with the exception of PTSD and obvious injuries).

oropolo··on HyperbolaBSD Roadmap: hard fork of the OpenBSD kernel and userspace
Right, just like Microsoft, Google, Apple, Sony, Netflix, Juniper and everyone else who uses BSD software never, ever gives their additions back.

Oh wait... they do!

Why is this being question being down-voted without explanation? I understand there are philosophical/religious implications to the question but it's still valid: what would you lose?

Q. Can I detect a MITM (machine in the middle) attack? A. No, not easily.

oropolo··on Ask HN: How do you develop crossplatform desktop applications in 2019?
The far more common approach at the moment is to use Electron though hopefully Google will create Linux, macOS, and Windows targets for compiled binary Flutter applications in the future.
oropolo··on Loneliness is an epidemic, and we can turn to technology to fix it
Technology is only a tool; it won't "fix" loneliness by itself any more than changing your keyboard will make you a better typist or speller. That said, it could be a highly effective tool as part of a concerted community effort, but it is only a tool.
oropolo··on End-to-End Encryption Isn’t as Safe as You Think
You mean ever since Zuckerberg testified before Congress that Facebook intercepted WhatsApp messages in Myanmar that indicated a violent clash was about to happen and vectored in law enforcement? The only law enforcement complaint is that there's apparently a lot of kiddie porn being traded via WhatsApp. I am in favor of the strongest possible penalties for the animals that created and trade such filth but I also don't think THAT should be a justification for undermining end-to-end encrypted chat applications that work.

And for crying out loud: quit WhatsApp and switch to Signal or Wire -- something outside of the reach of Zuckerberg!

oropolo··on Android updates are getting slower and slower, despite Google's best efforts
Google can't make it happen unilaterally other than the Pixel phones. Without both the carrier and the handset maker putting work into the upgrade it won't happen. And the handset makers like Samsung don't want to cannibalize sales or spend resources allowing us to upgrade our Galaxy S5 handsets to Android P and Q.
oropolo··on FTC may hold Zuckerberg personally responsible for Facebook Privay failures
Has the FTC ever suggested holding anyone personally accountable for privacy failures before? I've never heard of this even being suggested before.

I required to get my technician's license before I could take the family truck when I was in high school. And not answering up on 2m when my dad called was a groundable offense.

MS version of Fuchsia is far more likely.
oropolo··on Microsoft Releases a Linux Version of the ProcDump Sysinternals Tool
Makes me wonder if the story Wired did in 2005 about Linus Torvalds joining Microsoft and making a Linux-based version of Windows could actually happen. Link to that story is here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18383909
oropolo··on Linus Torvalds Joins Microsoft, Creates “WinX” Windows-On-Linux (2005 Fiction)
Given the recent embrace of open source -- especially linux -- by Microsoft, I can't help but wonder if something like "WinX" could actually happen, as is being mused about over on this thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18378332
oropolo··on Microsoft Releases a Linux Version of the ProcDump Sysinternals Tool
How would that be different from Azure App Service for Linux, a Platform-as-a-Service offering that runs apps that require Linux instead of Windows?
oropolo··on Coinbase is launching support for the USDC stablecoin
"Digital dollars?" We already have that -- it's called the US Dollar. Only 10% of the USD money supply is in physical paper or coin form. I receive my wages electronically and pay my mortgage, car payment, insurance, student loan, and buy groceries and entertainment without ever touching printed/minted money. And I suspect I'm in the majority on this point.

oropolo··on MongoDB switches up its open source license
> It's clear Google and Amazon (and maybe even Azure) are comfy taking OSS work, doing a ton of proprietary development on it, and leaving the companies who did all the groundwork flailing in the wind.

Have you seen the degree of investment Microsoft has made lately in Open Source? It's an upside-down world where Microsoft if a bigger champion -- and funder -- of open source than a company like Google which was built on Open Source software.

oropolo··on MongoDB switches up its open source license
This license seems to insure that MongoDB Inc either gets all source code to Mongo-as-a-Service from their competitors (which they can use to make a better service themselves) or they make money from all of their competitors through commercial licensing. Perhaps Oracle is preparing to acquire MongoDB Inc and this move is a prerequisite to acquisition?
oropolo··on MongoDB switches up its open source license
I might be reading this wrong, but doesn't this qualify as a "super viral" license in that any code that in any way is part of the stack for hosting Mongo as a Service must be open sourced as well? Granted, a company could buy a commercial license to avoid this but if (for the sake of example) Azure's Mongo hosting was using the open source license would this mean that EVERYTHING that goes into Azure, down to Windows "Redstone" source code, would need to be released?
oropolo··on Microsoft Joins the Open Invention Network
The continued hatred of Microsoft amazes me. If Linus Torvalds, Eric Raymond, and RMS all joined Microsoft and proclaimed it safe, I suspect the accusations of selling out or being drugged would be leveled within milliseconds.

I fully realize RMS would never do this; my larger point is that with a huge chunk of the population I don't think there is anything Microsoft can possibly do to convince them they aren't evil/truly friendly toward open source.

oropolo··on The Big Hack: Statements From Amazon, Apple, Supermicro, Chinese Government
Are there facilities anywhere in the US where motherboards can be manufactured?
oropolo··on Kotlin Multiplatform for Android and iOS
And an AS/400 was perfectly "mobile" to Arnold S. back in his prime. :-)
oropolo··on Kotlin Multiplatform for Android and iOS
Windows isn't a mobile platform. They tried 2.5 times and have given up. In mobile it's iOS and Android, and neither Apple nor Google recognize C# as a first-class language. If you can write a compiler that emits code that LLVM can compile to ARM binary with Xcode or package your MSIL with a micro .NET VM on Android, then more power to you but Apple and Google aren't going to help you if you get stuck.
oropolo··on Kotlin Multiplatform for Android and iOS
In essence, JetBrains has caught up to where Xamarin was prior to the announcement of Xamarin.Forms: the ability from one solution to have separate iOS and Android UI applications with a business logic library shared between the two, all written in C# or F# (the two languages supported by the Mono compiler). The main difference is that one of the vendors actually supports the language in question (Kotlin) as a first-class citizen.

And going the other way, there's been noise for a couple years that Android apps could be written in Swift, achieving the same effect in reverse.
