ornornor··on AliExpress runs silent WebAudio fingerprinting that breaks Bluetooth multipoint
There are few things more scammy than AliExpress “discounts”. I have yet to see a cent of the hundreds of dollars of “savings” they gave or advertised to me.

> At least, video animations are not a mess of frameworks and libraries that eat your RAM and CPU and introduce vulnerabilities.

Somebody at Logitech right now: “hold my beer”

ornornor··on A 25-year-old video patent just expired, ending a legal headache for Linux
There is no good Lenovo hardware anymore. It’s been completely swallowed by the Chinese company that bought it, and even the formerly “noble”/enterprise lines are junk now. Same as HP.
ornornor··on Children's stunted lungs show recovery in ultra low emission zone
So you support censorship?

Just kidding, I’ve seen it more and more as well, and feel the same as you about it.

1.2GB though. That’s a lot of json.

Logitech seems to suck at software. Why do you need an online account to remap your mouse buttons?

Same for the harmony 1100 which is a universal remote but can’t ever be programmed again since logitech killed their online server. It had the secret sauce for generating the binary blob to send the device to program it and nobody could figure out how this mess actually works to reimplement it. It seems like the blob wasn’t just parameters but also all sorts of scripts that changed with the config.

Needless to say I steer clear of Logitech anything now. It’s joined my blacklist along with Samsung and LG.

ornornor··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
It’s not like OP is putting a gun to anyone’s head!! If they want to share we’d appreciate but there is no obligation.

Are you also shocked that you can stand in the middle of the highway and get hit by a car and die? You can do it if someone asks you but you’re not forced to.

ornornor··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
I’ve noticed the same thing with computers, whenever I install MS windows on them uptime tanks ;)

Maybe they didn’t take the severance part that makes the NDA valid? IIRC for an NDA to be enforceable there has to be a monetary consideration to it. Or maybe it’s for no competes?
ornornor··on Rapid warming may tip AMOC at 2°C, slower warming may avert collapse
How is this relevant to what we’re discussing in this thread?
ornornor··on Rapid warming may tip AMOC at 2°C, slower warming may avert collapse
> you can't tell people "we have to work more to simply keep the status quo", let alone "we may even lose a lot of nice things and convenience in the process"

And yet this is what will happen. The question is are we walking into this prepared, or not? Just like a war, it’s unpleasant, most people would rather not do it, but would you rather be on the side that prepared for it or on the side that gets “surprised” by it?

ornornor··on Rapid warming may tip AMOC at 2°C, slower warming may avert collapse
> nobody want to hear about the dream of reducing growth, buying less, consuming less, etc.

The problem is that it’s going to happen either way.

The only question is are we facing this prepared or are we having a tantrum refusing to accept it and get hit by it anyway with our pants down? Looks like we’re going for pants down.

ornornor··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces
Why is Britain police and government seemingly sp eager to build a panopticon? I get it’s the trend worldwide but I’ve always had the impression Britain goes the extra mile and is well above the general level of surveillance typically found in western societies.

I remember about 20 years ago when I lived in London, you had to provide ID to enter clubs. Ok, to check your age. But the bouncers would also scan your id into machines at the entrance that recorded you were there “for your security, and if you don’t want you don’t get in”. Why? See also the vast number of CCTV cameras all over London, more than most capitals in western societies have.

And I suspect it started way before that, see Orwell 1984 for instance.

Where is this obsession coming from??

ornornor··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
That’s a terrible idea. Just think about privacy, pollution, cost.
ornornor··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
> A Mars spokesperson said: "Over the last 35 years, we have made a number of updates to our bar sizes and pack formats to reflect consumer demand, alongside considering wider external factors such as manufacturing costs and the price of cocoa."

I can guarantee you this is not “consumer demand”. Nobody goes to the store thinking “I wish shrinkflation was even more prevalent and that I’d get even less for my money”. Screw you corporate BS PR department, you’re not even trying.

ornornor··on Analyzing data from Silicon Valley ventures and founders prosecuted for fraud
There two types of SV founders: those committing fraud and those who haven’t been caught. It’s an arms race.
ornornor··on Taylor Farms has rewritten its cyclospora statement four times in sixteen days
Or people could just buy unwrapped lettuce. No one is asking anyone to quit lettuce altogether.
ornornor··on Taylor Farms has rewritten its cyclospora statement four times in sixteen days
It’s much more polluting (why wrap salad in a plastic bag?), promotes bacteria growth (and disease like in the present case), and further removes us from food in its original form. Of course you’re to spend your money however you see fit, that’s not the issue.
ornornor··on Taylor Farms has rewritten its cyclospora statement four times in sixteen days
It boggles my mind that people would buy salads in bags. Instead of just a head of lettuce like the rest of the world.
ornornor··on AI financial advice is surprisingly good, especially if you ask right questions
I was at a dealership not that long ago to buy a new car for someone.

The seller explained us how a lease was so much better financially than outright buying. He was completely wrong on the fundamentals: basically with a lease the car company makes you a huge favour because after the three years are up the car is worthless but they’ll take it back and lease you a new one anyway and you get a brand new car. Whereas if you own your car is worth 0 at year 3 (???) and you have to pay 100% of the price of a new car again to get a new one.

Never mind residual value or that you are allowed to keep a car longer than 3 years.

Must be working because most of my relatives friends have a leased car.

ornornor··on The most official water costs $120k a gallon
Much less than it discourages its use. Tobacco lobbies are fighting price increases tooth and nail, they wouldn't if it didn't work. Countries where the price has gone up have seen decreases in on-going consumption and new addictions. Countries where it's cheap (relative to local income) still have high level of smoking (and second-hand smoking).
ornornor··on The most official water costs $120k a gallon
Good, making them very expensive is one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking and all associated suffering, cancers, health costs, deaths.
ornornor··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
You’d think that for risking jail time etc the price would be much higher.
ornornor··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
That’s not Africa only. When a corruption scandal comes up (bribing, lobbying), I’m often surprised at how cheap it was to buy the official. It’s often in the 10–50k eur region.

Auto dark mode after dusk based on your location

Better page flip area options

Active corners that can do custom things and with layers

More text layout options (although the stock kobo firmware is decent at that already)

It’s a bit cumbersome to setup but once you’re done it pays back in how pleasant it makes the device to use.

I had the same problem and someone here shared the plugin, it does the job very well independently of your file structure and nesting.

I had the same problem with the missing Home Screen view and that solved it: you can see all your books no matter how deeply nested they are

ornornor··on More Tailscale tricks for your jailbroken Kindle
Same on my kobo. The only thing I was missing was the kobo like Home Screen where it shows all your books no matter how deeply nested. But of course there is a plugin for that: https://github.com/AndyHazz/bookshelf.koplugin

The only thing I’m missing now is a stylesheet or something to make a spot on the right edge be free of text as that’s where my external page turner clips (for hands free reading) and it hides part of the book’s text otherwise. If anyone has any clue on how to do it, lmk!
