In 1986, I purchased a copy of Turbo Pascal 3.0 for $35 at the university bookstore. It was the cat's pajamas.

LibreOffice is good for the home user, hobbyist, and student, but lacks the advanced accounting functions of Excel.

A C&D took down Nitter and XCancel because they used X data without the advertising, etc. I still call X Twitter.

orionblastar··on Does Computer Science Need Computers?
I remember writing code in a paper notebook in 1986 and then having columns for each variable and simulating the computer processing the language. It can be done, but it is much harder than using a computer.

It is good that there is a native macOS version of Quake; this is needed for more games.

orionblastar··on Illinois just told every operating system to start reporting your kid's age
What about Linux that doesn't use SystemD?
orionblastar··on Quake on the Game Boy Advance [video]
Looks good as a homebrew game.
orionblastar··on Illinois just told every operating system to start reporting your kid's age
This is censorship; it is like saying you can't eat a steak because a baby can't chew it. They will try to ban Linux or fine Linux developers unless it reports the user's age.
orionblastar··on The State of Google
Yahoo did the same thing to its web browser and Yahoo Groups, not to mention Geocities. If something costs more to support than it brings in, a company will end support for it.
orionblastar··on Adobe, RapidRAW, and the End of Selling Software as a Product
Software as a Service is the model Microsoft Office and Adobe products went to with subscriptions. I can use LibreOffice instead of MS Office, but GIMP isn't the same as Photoshop, etc. There needs to be a moonshot project to make GIMP and others as easy to use as Photoshop and have the same features.

I hope it does better than TempleOS.
orionblastar··on Show HN: I Built a Carbles Game
Looks like a version of "Sorry".
orionblastar··on Data shows just how hard Tesla's Cybertruck has flopped
It was too expensive anyway.
orionblastar··on Why does everyone suddenly hate data centers?
The consumption of energy and the pollution of water sources. Some people living next to Data Centers have an $ 850-a-month electric bill because the Data Center uses so much power that it increases the rate due to shortages. Also, all of the debt used to fund Data Centers is creating an AI Bubble that might pop soon.

orionblastar··on The Religion of Speed
Yeah, but if you do 100 things with low quality, it is going to be crappy. In the mid-1990s, I did quality control work on debugging code for Visual BASIC and ASP web pages. Now people are rushed to do sloppy work in quantity because it is done fast, not quality, where it is done right.
