orhmeh09··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
You are spreading false information. I routinely enter my other country with a combination of US passport and national ID card. I haven't renewed my passport for that country in almost 20 years, more than half of which I was living there for.
orhmeh09··on Quake Shareware, a CD-ROM just a little too full
I never noticed any problems, but I did have the mmx version. It wasn't fast but never did the playback stutter , even with dreamweaver and several browser windows
orhmeh09··on Dates That Don't Exist (2015)
People working with buildings, infrastructure, and artifacts that predate 1582. Many such things in Europe
orhmeh09··on Using ThinkPad T480 as a mobile phone
I have the same issue. For all the talk of USB-C's supposed design for redirecting damage from the ports to the connector, it failed pretty badly here for probably thousands of people. Never had these issues with a barrel connector.
orhmeh09··on Anthropic, please ship an official Claude Desktop for Linux
Sounds like a job for a more capable LLM than Opus.
orhmeh09··on Don't Roll Your Own
This is one of the most useful programs I use every day. Works in Firefox too
orhmeh09··on Loops is a federated, open-source TikTok
I enjoy watching TikTok, especially local or niche creators who have just a couple hundred followers. This is not going to be a problem as you imagine.
orhmeh09··on Show HN: CIA World Factbook Archive (1990–2025), searchable and exportable
World facts provided by the CIA, too, have intrinsic quality issues. I'm not too worried!
orhmeh09··on DOGE Track
> The world sucks. Whataboutism only makes it worse.

If you believe this, why did you just go "well, what about China?"

orhmeh09··on Google confirms 'high-friction' sideloading flow is coming to Android
I use uBlock on mobile safari.
orhmeh09··on Local First Htmx
> But really the ultimate goal for any good website engineer should be to offload as much logic and processing to the browser, not rewrite everything in JS just because you can

Why? This makes for a horrible user experience. Things like TicketMaster, and in recent years GitHub, slow my machine to a crawl sometimes. I much prefer mostly static content. This is a well-made website: https://www.compuserve.com/

orhmeh09··on Scripts I wrote that I use all the time
I can't imagine a scenario where I would want to reimplement rm just for this.
orhmeh09··on PYX: The next step in Python packaging
I think CRAN for R is very good, partly aided by an aggressive pruning policy for broken packages.
orhmeh09··on PYX: The next step in Python packaging
It is not fast. Mamba and micromamba are still much faster than conda and yet lack basic features that conda has to provide. Everyone is dropping conda like a hot plate since the licensing changes in 2024.
orhmeh09··on Don't animate height
Yes, with StopTheMadness https://underpassapp.com/StopTheMadness/

It works on Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, but you must buy it.

orhmeh09··on Debugging Bash Like a Sire (2023)
Because it's better at the task than Python is.
orhmeh09··on What the Fuck Python
Reticulate is a bridge that lets you use Python from R so that you don't have to suffer Python the language.
orhmeh09··on Make Your Own Backup System – Part 1: Strategy Before Scripts
Just use restic. It handles these things.
orhmeh09··on What the Fuck Python
You can get by with R and reticulate.
orhmeh09··on Proton threatens to quit Switzerland over new surveillance law
They might log access in some circumstances, according to their privacy policy (https://proton.me/legal/privacy)

> 2.5 IP logging: By default, we do not keep permanent IP logs in relation with your Account. However, IP logs may be kept temporarily to combat abuse and fraud, and your IP address may be retained permanently if you are engaged in activities that breach our Terms of Service (e.g. spamming, DDoS attacks against our infrastructure, brute force attacks). The legal basis of this processing is our legitimate interest to protect our service against non-compliant or fraudulent activities. If you enable authentication logging for your Account or voluntarily participate in Proton's advanced security program, the record of your login IP addresses is kept for as long as the feature is enabled. This feature is off by default, and all the records are deleted upon deactivation of the feature. The legal basis of this processing is consent, and you are free to opt in or opt out of that processing at any time in the security panel of your Account. The authentication logs feature records login attempts to your Account and does not track product-specific activity, such as VPN activity.

orhmeh09··on Launch HN: Exa (YC S21) – The web as a database
Not to be confused with exa: https://github.com/ogham/exa
orhmeh09··on Try Switching to Kagi
Perhaps you are lucky to stick to happy paths or are not particularly discerning. It's real. https://www.404media.co/google-search-really-has-gotten-wors...
orhmeh09··on TikTok tells staff impacted by wildfires to use sick hours if they can't work
Partner works at a county agency. There are 1-2 weather-related days off you can use, but if you experience more weather than that in a year you are free to use your vacation or take unpaid time off. This applies also if the job site is closed.
orhmeh09··on Breaking the 4Chan CAPTCHA
Do you have examples of "just use python 2" still being a thing in 2024?
orhmeh09··on Language is not essential for the cognitive processes that underlie thought
*patently
orhmeh09··on Where are programming languages created? A zoomable map
Ah, let's not forget Lua =)
orhmeh09··on Dawn of a new era in Search: Balancing innovation, competition, and public good
I don't think it's that amazing for an engineer. Google is much better if you're looking for things related to Intel compilers, for example. Try searching for «intel ipo fuse-ld=lld icx» on both engines.

Note: I am a paying Kagi customer

orhmeh09··on Ruby's official documentation just got a new look
Extremely often. I look at source code, API docs, issues, etc. on my phone all the time when I am on the bus or in the bathroom or in bed or wherever.
orhmeh09··on Anthropic Claude 3.5 can create icalendar files, so I did this
That is a really fun idea, I love it.
orhmeh09··on Micro-libraries should never be used
I don't really see the problem with the CRA docs.
