oreilles··on Bun: Fast JavaScript runtime, transpiler, and NPM client written in Zig
This is one of if not the most insane thing in web dev at the moment. Git can diff thousand of files between two commit in less time than it takes to render the result on screen. But somehow it can take actual minutes to find out where to place a dependency in a simple tree with npm. God, why ?
oreilles··on How normal am I?
By moving my face to show my best profile, I managed to get a 10.1 in beauty. Yes, point 1. Don't know if the algorithm was being sarcastic.
oreilles··on How many decimals of pi do we need? (2016)
No, you haven't read the link he posted. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_number#Definitions: "A disjunctive sequence is a sequence in which every finite string appears. A normal sequence is disjunctive". If Pi is normal, then it is also disjunctive.
oreilles··on StrictYAML
> Dhall is a programmable configuration language that you can think of as: JSON + functions + types + imports

So like, Typescript but worse ?

oreilles··on Apple’s macOS Ventura – New Security Changes
I don't believe it ever was the holy grail of touch typist. First, it was incredibly loud, and most people complained about it. The key travel distance was mostly cited as a con, not a pro. And only then the reliablity issues started to arise. But it didn't take 2018. This article (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15496745) made it to the top of HN in Oct 2017, but people had already been complaining for months (See this article from February https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/some-2016-macbook-pro-o...).
oreilles··on The dissolution of Apple’s legacy design team
I can't tell for iOS, but for macOS the UI has only gone downhill since Ive's departure. Broken navigation gestures and shortcuts, UI inconsistencies, indistinguishable toolbar icons, wasted space everywhere... Since Big Sur I feel like I'm using a bad Linux clone of macOS.

oreilles··on Major crypto lender Celsius freezes withdrawals as markets tumble
The value will be proportional to the effort the kid must provide. If you says that a chore dollar is worth 1 human hour, that's a very strong and valuable currency. But FIAT currencies are from defined as such. As a single example, their value partially depends on the amount in circulation, which might change anytime without notice nor democratic consultation.
oreilles··on Major crypto lender Celsius freezes withdrawals as markets tumble
Just because you support an alternative money system doesn't mean you have to be against the concept of a bank altogether. Bank exists because people suck at protecting their money. You don't keep cash in your house because you get breaked in. And same goes for crypto. You could get your key stolen. You could forget your passphrase. You could get hacked. And so on. Bank aren't invulnerable, but they sucks much less than average people at protecting their assets, and this is why people uses them.
oreilles··on Fresh – Next-gen web framework
Other than helping creating websites, this has almost nothing to do with SvelteKit. SvelteKit: - Requires configuration and build - Doesn't support partial hydration - Ship JS to the client by default - Can also be used as static site generator or SPA framework (no server side code)
oreilles··on Mercedes-Benz says Level 3 self-driving option ready to roll
You'd don't expect the driver to pay, you just expect to be paid. Doesn't matter to you if it is OP, his insurance company or his car manufacturer. It does matter to the driver though, which is the reason of this discussion on liability.

> If anyone's ever programmed a TB-303 manually you can imagine how much patience it must've taken to score this.

Well, by his own words:

> It was made on a non midi TB-303, I copied the score from Bach's prelude no.1 in C which is all monophonic and quite simple to read and put in to the 303. Most patterns are 8 16ths long with accents on the 5th and 8th notes. The patterns are repeated twice per bar. I chained every pattern in each pattern group start to finish in song mode and manually changed the pattern group from I to II to III and back again throughout the song, used up about 36 patterns on the 303 + took about 3 or 4 hours!

oreilles··on My next main browser: a review of Orion
I think the time taken by extensions loading is order of magnitudes lower than the time saved by skipping the hundreds of MBs of ads every page has to offer.
oreilles··on Consent-O-Matic: Automatic handling of GDPR consent forms
"I don't care about cookies" accepts everything and you can't change its behavior. This extension allows you to reject them all by default.
oreilles··on New iPhone SE
This iPhone SE 2020 (and this new one) both have a smaller screen than the 12/13 mini. The mini line underperformed because it was in direct competition with the SE, not because people didn't want small screen. If that was the case, they wouldn't buy the SE either. You can see this very well in the sales share by model from this article: https://9to5mac.com/2021/07/15/iphone-12-line-accounted-for-....
oreilles··on Google Docs New Feature: Pageless
XML is a document. A relational database is a relational database. Both can be used to create a tree structure. Notion does it wit a "block" table, each block having a parent block id, and a list of child block ids, allowing tree traversal in both directions.
oreilles··on What the Omicron wave is revealing about human immunity
We know that for a long time. I'm just saying that despite having 93% of the adult population vaccinated (-18 yo do not need the vaccine pass to go anywhere) , and our ICU beds occupation rate being only 70% at the highest omicron peak, our politicians still refuse to call it an end.

"Being done" with covid is only a political decision, and no percentage appears to be high enough for them.

oreilles··on What the Omicron wave is revealing about human immunity
Absolutely, but this is in no way related to whether we decide this is "the end" or not.
oreilles··on What the Omicron wave is revealing about human immunity
Current numbers are already manageable. At the Omicron wave peak, total ICU beds are 70% full. And recent (official) data shown that 30% of all COVID positive hospitalizations were actually unrelated to COVID, that number being as high as 50% for 0-49 age group. Yet our politicians refuse to drop restrictions, they even doubled down by making vaccination mandatory to go anywhere, when a negative test used to be enough.
oreilles··on What the Omicron wave is revealing about human immunity
In France, between January 1st and 16th, vaccinated people accounted for 60% of the new hospitalizations. We, like most of Europe, have 90+% of adult population fully vaccinated, and are nowhere near "being done".
oreilles··on Building single-page-apps with PostgREST
Hell you can even write Postgres functions in Javascript with PL/V8.
oreilles··on PortableApps.com Hits 1 Billion App Downloads
This is why I love macOS so much. Every application is in /Applications. "Installation" isn't even something. 99% of the time, drag&dropping an app in this folder is all you need to do. If I want to delete an app, I go there, ⌘ + ⌫ it and it's done. Updaters just works and the new version just replaces the old one. Application data is almost always in ~/Library/Application Support/Application so I don't have anything else to do.

I was flabbergasted the last time I had to clean up a Windows computer to see how convoluted software update and removal is. You need to go to a specific windows preference pane to be able to uninstall an app, and even then most apps have a specific software to uninstall them, which sometimes needs to be downloaded separately. If you want to uninstall two apps at the same time, you can't. Upgrading an app generally involve manually navigating to the app's website, downloading the latest version, install it somewhere it doesn't interfere with the previous version, then deleting the previous app folder, then praying for windows to be able to link its search results to the correct ones after that process. It's baffling the very feature why operating systems exists in the first place (managing applications) still isn't solve more than 40 years after the first windows release.

oreilles··on Show HN: I redesigned my landing page to be as unprofessional as possible

oreilles··on Pg_GraphQL: A GraphQL Extension for PostgreSQL
Don't know how your JSON generation works but when using `row_to_json()`, all PostGIS geometries are automatically casted to GeoJSON objects by default which is very convenient.

You can blame Apple for having made dumb decisions in the past, but you can't blame them for fixing them now. Also, what additional efforts and problems with the notch are you talking about ?

oreilles··on Apple Disables FaceID if you change the screen yourself [video]
CSAM has nothing to do with device security but with privacy. This is off topic. Also, CSAM is entirely optional anyway, you can just not use iCloud if you don't want to be "spied on" by Apple, and I write this in brackets because willingfully sending unencrypted files to Apple doesn't really quallify as being spied on by them.

This is not about defending Apple, I don't support the CSAM scanning feature neither as I find it useless and insulting.

oreilles··on Leaving the Apple ecosystem behind
Placing the url at the bottom is brilliant UI wise considering the height of the average smartphone nowadays. And anyway they made this an option for those who wouldn't like it. The “mess" that was discussed in your second link (the hovering URL bar) was only present in beta version and has been removed from the release. Finally, CSAM scanning has nothing to do with OS security, but with privacy.
