orangeduck··on Show HN: Introducting C+
Well Objective C is a separate language entirely. This is just a library for GNU99 C.

Point about name noted, open to suggestions :)

orangeduck··on The Unreasonable Ineffectiveness of Mathematics Education
Great article. The lego air plane analogy is very accurate. It is certainly true that maths has lost some of its mysticism in early education but I think perhaps telling students that "maths is a set of abstract made up rules governing an imaginary universe" might alienate them just as much as before.
orangeduck··on Room Temperature Superconductivity Found in Graphite Grains
If this becomes verified then it is very exciting - give me my hover board.

Even if it is entirely impractical in use, the thought that a room temperature superconductor may exist in one form or other is just more evidence that little stops the march of science :)

orangeduck··on Depression lies
Ultimately nihilism is non-prescriptive as to how you should behave or feel. Under nihilism you can very easily turn "Why Bother?" into "Why Not?", or "Why do I exist?" into "Why would I not exist?" - because all are meaningless questions.

At least this is how I deal with the fatalist aspect. Live you life as you would "normally", take the actions you think are best and do what gives you emotional fulfilment. Nihilism is only a weight if you secretly want meaning (and are somehow disappointed that your actions are meaningless). Happiness isn't blocking certain truths, it is just a biological state. If you truly do not believe or wish for a meaning then Nihilism sets you free.

orangeduck··on Fun with in-engine color grading
This is very clever.

I've used exported curves from photoshop to generate color correction LUTs, but actually just displaying the LUT in the screenshot, and then using the manipulated result to generate back a new LUT is much more flexible and pretty smart!

orangeduck··on Most Pressed Keys and Programming Syntaxes
Because it is the most common letter in English and used for variable and identifier names.
orangeduck··on Armchair scientists
Even if a snap judgement were right or did add missing perspective it would only be by chance, or only useful in hindsight. Such as the distinction between "knowledge" and "a true belief", armchair commentary is basically unproductive even in the cases where it looks good.
orangeduck··on Six Myths About Ray Tracing
As the submission hit the front page the site went down and I had to kill the link to prepare the server for a second (I couldn't even SSH in). Spamming wasn't my intention.
orangeduck··on Blender 2.63: with BMesh (N-sided polygons)
BMesh sounds pretty cool. It is a feature which Wings3d (my go-to modelling package) embraced from the get go, and it sounds like Blender has added many of the same tools which were fantastic in Wings. Unfortunately Wings has fallen a little by the way-side so it is great to see Blender pick up this idea! Perhaps it is about time I had another shot at learning Blender because it is looking more and more powerful.
orangeduck··on Show HN: Autowrap C functions at runtime for the Python/C API
Fair enough, I agree that it isn't the prettiest or most natural of code but it isn't any "magic" too far beyond convention. Without C++ templates this is the only way to achieve certain things - and is fairly standardized.

See va_args for an example of naked types being passed in the standard library. Really it is not much different from the fact you have to pass a format string to printf.

orangeduck··on Show HN: Autowrap C functions at runtime for the Python/C API
By runtime I mean that the functions which are avaliable are registered at runtime - rather than being statically wrapped or converted by some previous tool in the toolchain. Sure, there is some macro stuff going on, but if you were to evaluate the macro stuff by hand you could even use PyAutoC to register C functions truly at run-time using dlopen.

A clear example of why this is useful is shown in the demo about overwriting __getattr__ etc. A static tool will just generate N number of getters and setters.

Pyrex/Cython are both pretty cool. I developed this for helping me with embedding python on an existing C codebase. Something those two things can't do. Similarly ctypes is great for doing it the other way around but doesn't work well for embedding and also doesn't do the automatic conversion so well.
