Alas most people are incompetent when it comes to cryptography. It's another of those situations when if you don't know why something has to be done a certain way, you shouldn't be included in that decision making progress.

opless··on Ask HN: Does anyone have celiac disease and how do you deal with that?
I found out in 2006, just as the EU allergen labelling directive started to really kick in properly.

Bread has come a long way. Pasta is brilliant. You can now have pizza! Gluten free soy sauce/tamari is available! Fish fingers Sausages! Pies!

Some things are sadly no longer stocked which were quite tasty. But given the british pallet im not surprised!

opless··on Ask HN: Does anyone have celiac disease and how do you deal with that?
As many others have said here, I have a strict one-time contamination then no return policy when it comes to restaurants.

The UK is pretty good with Gluten Free foodstuffs and has a fairly narrow but reasonably good restaurants; * Bella Italia * Zizzies * Pho * Prezzo

Most restaurants have separate preparation and cooking areas (Pho is almost an entirely GF kitchen)

When I’m on holiday, I always do self catering, and eat fairly simple meals. Europe is fairly good with labelling allergens and have Free-From sections in Supermarkets.

Pasta/Bread is not the same as the regular wheat based versions. However I weaned myself off bread. Pasta has a different texture, maybe like day-old reheated by microwave stuff. I like it that way - hahaha

If you're particularly sensitive to gluten the EU definition of gluten free can bite you, but having a strict rules about never revisiting Food/places that contaminate you is a good rule of thumb.

The feeder personality type will be the most frustrated with you.

Be firm with whatever rules work with you. Don't waiver, unless it removes more risk.

I'm so happy knowing my struggle with this is shared, and that others have similar reactions and coping strategies!

My early version one (4Gb version), was terrible. I had to buy a fan (thank pimoroni) to stop it thermal throttling.

It was quite poor in performance (youtube tearing a lot, usb keyboard issues, freezing occasionally)

I hope when I plug it in again and update it, things will have stabilised a bit.

opless··on Ask HN: How do you do home surveillance?
If you only have one camera you could be okay, running two 720 mjpeg streams over usb2 can be quite problematic ;)

Do you know what codec and resolution is in use? What about the lag? What model of camera?

I'm curious because my CCTV journey has been over a few years, and there has obviously been kernel and distro improvements.

I did use the MotionEyeOS distro with an internal camera last summer briefly (a fortnight), but it didn't fit my use case very well.

opless··on Ask HN: How do you do home surveillance?
The bad bits of my journey...

Raspberry PIs, other SBCs and usb webcams/noIR are an exercise in futility, as the inbuilt camera interface and v4l lags horribly at reasonable resolutions.

USB webcams can behave oddly if you stream constantly and are close to using the bandwidth of USB2

Zoneminder is memory hungry and will suck CPU like no tomorrow. But has a decent user interface, if you keep lots of data.

MotionEye can be configured to be unable to play back its captures which is a bug imho.

opless··on Ask HN: How do you do home surveillance?
MotionEye and docker.

I started off with a couple of Chinese WiFi cameras. I needed to hack a perl script to get at its stream; https://gist.github.com/opless/d1effc2eefdf2dfe3b1a6418979bc...

Now I use eBay'd Axis POE cameras dumping continuous video to a samba share, and motion eye to capture a frame every second and video when motion triggered.

All very overkill but worthwhile as it's caught vandals, bike thieves and trespassing landlords.

It depends on the merchant and they're apple/android pay enabled or not.

Regular contactless limits are 30, otherwise the limit is much higher.

My highest was ~£1200 at an apple store, and I had paid a 500 deposit on a car, but it refused the 8K balance. So there is a limit somewhere between your 2K and my 8K attempts on apple pay ;)

opless··on DoChat – a Dockerized WeChat PC Windows client for Linux
Same in the UK, you get at least £30 from your contactless card/Apple/Android pay.

Some shops do more, an increasing large number allow a larger limit. However some large shops (Tesco) only allow large limits on their own payment apps, rather than Apple/android pay, forcing you to use your card and pin!

opless··on Astronomers want public funds for intelligent life search
Sorry, but according to news sources a coalition of non-US vessels are doing the bulk of patrols out there in the strait of Hormuz whilst the US is only seemingly wanting to lend 'command and control' style support.

Elsewhere the UK assists the US in Syria and Afghanistan. It's not the other way around.

But feel free to tell me how great the american way of doing things is. What with fantastic provision of basic healthcare for its citizens, and sensible gun control oh yes and affordable education.

opless··on Astronomers want public funds for intelligent life search
I'm quite happy with the two UK Navy frigates patrolling the area.

The UK has a significantly smaller defence budget than the USA does. Which kinda proves my point.

opless··on The dystopian world of software engineering interviews
I have always found coding interviews weird.

For example, you don't ask a carpenter if they know what a dovetail joint is. You don't ask a bricklayer on which brand of bricks he prefers, or how tall his last wall was. You certainly don't ask a mechanic how an internal combustion engine works!

Sure throw a few algorithms at entry level employees, with no experience, to make sure they understand the basics. But not experienced developers!

opless··on Astronomers want public funds for intelligent life search
You mean like ... South Korea, New Zeland, and the UK who are already there?

Seriously, the USA aren't the only armed forces that patrol the area.

Agreed rando might just be shorthand for “anyone in the organisation that’s not responsible for production”.

However there’s often a substitution for a more acceptable phrase when you relay similar information to management.

It’s perfectly acceptable in this context of a BOFH type story, which doesn’t care about the identity of the luser in question.

opless··on Trying to sneak in a sketchy .so over the weekend

opless··on Trying to sneak in a sketchy .so over the weekend
There is a rule of thumb to not ship anything on a Friday.

This was a Sunday!

And it didn’t seem to have been tested, so where was the Dev/UAT/Prod separation?

So many red flags, and I think anyone who has been in development for a while has had some product owner try to break procedures to force whatever pet project that is falling behind to hit some target to get their bonus/gain brownie points. It almost never goes well. But by this time the PO has a scapegoat because it’s no longer their fault it’s not working, it’s production’s fault. (Also it’s not always a PO, it can be a developer or anyone up to c-suite level)

Sigh

opless··on Sometimes, requiring explanability is counterproductive
No. It isn't exactly the same.

It shares some features, I grant you, but decoding cats/dogs by welding a classifier to the equivalent of V3/V4 isn't what a mammal does.

Furthermore; A "conscious" short term memory of 7-10 sequences is correct. So we break issues down into manageable chunks and it's turtles all the way down.

Comparing the product of >200m years of evolution Vs a decade or so of human endeavour is a strawman.
