opless··on Eon Switches All U.K. Customers to Renewable Power
This is quite literally ridiculous.

In the UK we have the national grid that supplies all connected homes in the UK. It is the sole supplier of electricity.

All electricity generated is fed to this national grid. Coal/Gas/Wind/Hydroelectric it doesn't matter. There are no separate streams from one generator of electricity that you can request from.

What you DO get is a choice of who bills you.

I'm unsure how these renewable energy certificates work. But it's likely a scam on the generation end that the suppliers will wave at naïve customers to hide the fact that there is zero difference between the electricity you by from eon or British gas, or any of the other billing agents.

opless··on RSA is a fragile cryptosystem
Even don't prototype with homerolled encryption.

You should know how easy prototypes enter production!

opless··on Show HN: FamousFaces, after the hype: AI for fun
Seems like a blank page to me.

opless··on Ephemeral certificates could replace password vaults
This sounds completely insane.

So we delegate security to an alleged "trusted" third party that both the sysadmin and user have to trust.

Sounds like a massive increase in attack surface with questionable advantages.

opless··on Encrypting Gopher
Perhaps what is needed is a simple standard API that wraps OpenSSL, GNU/TLS, mbed TLS, Polar SSL, et al - that covers a small set of standard use cases.[1]

It's not /hard/ using a library, but it's hard using it properly.

And unless you're a cryptographer, you ABSOLUTELY SHOULD NOT roll your own encryption, and even then you're likely to screw things up.

[1] I know PKCS#11 and friends try to do some of this, but no-one fully implements the entire standard(s), and no-one implements a standard set of features either ... which makes finding a provider and a client with overlapping feature sets somewhat interesting.

I've done some (proprietary) work in this area, and I think that it ought to be the way to go.

opless··on Battle testing data integrity verification with ZFS and Btrfs
Sorry, this was a couple of years ago now. I can’t even find it casually grepping my irc logs.
opless··on Battle testing data integrity verification with ZFS and Btrfs
BRTFS catastrophically failed on me twice.

I have ZFS on another box that failed badly but lost no data... That was with bad ram and a motherboard that was on the "do not use" list for making ZFS NAS boxes. It always recovered the errors

Currently using it in RAID mode to hold large data sets and CCTV footage for my homelab on three drives that have smart warnings for age without any issues at all for the past two and a half years and two Ubuntu upgrades

opless··on How to Calm a Crying Baby Like a Mesopotamian
Some babies like their pacifiers/dummies, some like a clean little finger for #5

Sorry for the late response ... Notifications don't seem to be a thing on this site.

opless··on How to Calm a Crying Baby Like a Mesopotamian
#4, and #5 for sure.

My niece was upset due to just being fed and her stomach having the usual baby issues, a bit of jiggling on my lap with my little finger to suck on calmed her right down as mum was having a bit of a meltdown due to lack of sleep, and baby being super demanding. Niece was asleep in no time due to being handled confidently and noticing what was working and what wasn't.

One size most certainly doesn't fit all.

What about the plethora of cheap chinese ones?

Does the USA actually manufacture any of the things on the list any more?

Biased systems != racist.

Biased systems are just WRONG.

opless··on Court Says Using Chalk on Tires for Parking Enforcement Violates Constitution
In the UK equipment varies.

I've seen smartphone based license scanners, Psion-based data entry terminals (they punch in each and every offenders license plate), but parking meters tend to have a paper receipt you place on the dashboard or stick to the window. But now they have a pay-using-an-app option ... They take your licence plate details always and check it against an online db, and if not then they look for a paper ticket.

Pretty much, if you park in a time limited street zone or a metered zone or a municipal car park ... You can be assured your car number plate is captured along with entry and exit times.

The data is likely sold on too

This doesn’t happen with socialised healthcare that’s free at the point of service.

A government can negotiate lower prices than a commercial entity. They also can legislate to force bad actors to be reasonable.

Sadly the UK’s NHS is being slowly converted to the USAs fundamentally broken system of “what the market can bear”.

Rampant capitalism didn’t work for the banks either. They needed a social bailout when their markets crashed.

opless··on Gmail not allowing push notifications on iPhone Mail app, should've been illegal
When did this happen?

I have things still happily using IMAP, in fact gmail on my iPhone is still showing IMAP-like folders, further more the gmail help still shows the IMAP configuration procedure[1].

opless··on Israel airport security stole my laptop
This is a good argument for never taking any electronic devices outside your home region.

Even if you get your device back, after someone takes it behind the curtain and fiddles with it ... How can you be sure that they have not compromised it for its onward journey?

opless··on New Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+
This is what I do for an IR camera project.

Set up everything how I like it, set root read-only and mount tmpfs in various areas such as /var/log etc..

opless··on New Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+
I posted it (though I'll freely admit hackaday was the source that I discovered it through)

Personally I want to use it as an internal filesystem for various projects (like games - instead of zip/pak files, which are really read only)

even littlefs over https might be an interesting naval gazing project :D

opless··on RFIDler – An Open Source Software Defined RFID Reader/Writer/Emulator (2013)
However the support for those things that are on alibaba, ebay etc. (Proxmark3 v3 Easy) is supposedly going away.

I've just tried to find a page with the reasons about why they're no longer supporting it, but I've failed to find it.

I seem to remember it's something to do with wanting to support the more fancy versions that cos 5-10x more :/

However I can't find the page, so maybe I'm not remembering something correctly.
