opine-at-random··on [dead]
The source said 3,000 of the pagers exploded when a coded message was sent to them, simultaneously activating the explosives.
opine-at-random··on Land use policies make urban childcare expensive and rare
Cannot wait to leave my children with some rando with excess space whose alternative career prospects are flipping burger for $25/hr.

opine-at-random··on Zuckerberg's bunker plans fuel speculation on billionaires building bunkers
Why would it be so conspiratorial?

These people are overwhelmingly responsible for the viciation of our world and societies, and claim the profits from it.

An INT value only goes up to 2B, these people have orders of magnitude more money than that. Knowing our living planet's active course of destruction, this is literally the smartest way they could spend that money. The alternative is for them to have some kind of empathetic awakening, reorient their own existence and the existence of their enterprises, and recognize meaningful ways to spend their money... but if all the resource in the world couldn't give them that perspective, I doubt anything can.

It's crazy, because they could build a world in which there where good ways to spend that money, or spend that money on the multitude of extant causes that could use it. But they would rather hoard wealth and steal the collective future of the planet (including their own, and their offspring), and then delusionally try to seclude themselves away.

Their power only exists in the world they're bent on destroying.

The beautiful thing about our late-stage world, is that the appropriate resources will be spent on testing and validation for those who can afford it, and literally every other creature on the planet will have to bear the externalities.

Truly a perfect system.

opine-at-random··on Does Wayland really break everything?
I think the difference is that Windows is proprietary, parasitic hate-ware that warrants changing at any cost.. and x11 is libre software that works; with well supported workflows that aren't even on the agenda for wayland development.

Also I feel like I've been waiting a decade and I still can't do fractional scaling on wayland last I checked.

opine-at-random··on Review: Framework Laptop finally gets an AMD Ryzen config–and it’s pretty good
I own a framework, and 3/4 of the ports are failing. I shilled this machine hard when I got it, but now I have dubious connections to my ext-monitor and my microphone. Sometimes when I'm moving files to-from my SSD I have intermittent failures. Also the hinge that it comes with is fucking atrocious.

I really wanted to love this $1500 product, but frankly; I'm just going to resuscitate my thinkpad, and get my work to provide a desktop and use x11 forwarding on it.

opine-at-random··on “Winners Take None:” Coworking, Self Storage, Scooters Have Burned Billions
Maybe doesn't make sense for the company. But there's many people involved for whom it must have been an extremely good decision to juice the VC funding quickly and at any expense. Better to have a few millions from a failed startup than nothing XD
opine-at-random··on Cancer rates are climbing among young people. It’s not clear why
Luckily it comes at the mere additional cost of also parasitizing the essence of our activities and connections, both to our spaces and each other.
opine-at-random··on We've filed a lawsuit against GitHub Copilot
If you'd ever read even a single one of the licenses to the software I'm sure you use everyday, you'd understand. This is such an obvious and pathetic strawman.

I notice often on hackernews that people don't seem to understand anything about free or open-source software outside of the pragmatics of whether they can abuse the work for free.
