operatorius··on Strategic Oil Reserves Down to a Record Low Two-Week Supply
> I Came to know fuck this all happend

I guess it's time to watch:

Can't Get You Out of My Head: An Emotional History of the Modern World by Adam Curtis

operatorius··on AI is making me dumb
Managing cognitive load was cool before managing context window has become the thing.

Same techniques for both - the right abstractions, the right app architecture choices and layering.

operatorius··on How I archived 10 years of memories using Spotify
tangentially related

I've decided to part ways with my physical record collection. Before putting everything up for sale on discogs I decided I will listen and sit through every record I have. Going through each brought back many memories of the times I listened to the record the most. It was enough just to take it into my hands, take it out, look at the cover.

I rarely feel anything like that when I play music via digital means. As if memories _stick_ better on physical mediums.

operatorius··on Ask HN: What are young technically minded people reading?
At the moment I'm reading:

* Anthony Bourdain - Kitchen Confidential

* Bessel van der Kolk - The Body Keeps the Score

operatorius··on Ask HN: What is the most secure way of baby monitoring?
We are using capidi audio only monitoring system. Works over large distance. Were more than happy. Very reliable solution.

At times we thought that we need video too, but we managed without it just fine.

operatorius··on Ask HN: Help with Glioblastoma
I hope you and you're family doing okay. This is not an easy thing to deal with. A relative of mine has died because of glioblastoma. He survived 14 months after the diagnosis.

I know this might come as very harsh from me but to this day glioblastoma is a death sentence.

I remember myself and others spending hours on the internet looking for trials, resources, success stories and what not. Later I realized that was just part of denial and negotiation.

He went through 2 operations where the portions of tumor were removed. Each time he came out with sort of personality changes, degradation in cognition.

The only thing that helped was that I scored thc oil - it's illegal where I live - and administered it to the relative just for the sake of better mood and quality of life.

operatorius··on Bespoke Synth 1.0 – open-source software modular synthesizer
> reading about Tim Hecker using it

hey could you please share the link where you've read that. Thanks!

operatorius··on Psst: Fast Spotify client with native GUI, without Electron, built in Rust
> a forum on a now defunct tracker

Years have passed. I still havent filled the gap left by whatcd...

operatorius··on I made a mistake with Terraform and Azure made it worse
This!

In addition to that things can be made even less error prone. Ive done this using yaml pipeline in azure devops. The plan task can be used to set an output variable which indicates if the generated plan contains any changes. That boolean value is used as a condition to trigger a manual verification task which basically prevents apply running if there are any changes without reviewing it first.

As the op mentions, the generated plan is an artifact itself that is used in a following apply task

operatorius··on I wrote a children's book / illustrated guide to Apache Kafka
Really enjoyed reading it. the analogies are very clear, easy to understand and fun to read. the illustrations are amazing as well. wish there was more of it :)
operatorius··on The chip shortage could lead to an era of hardware innovation
The ones that youve described are simply more efficient. What I was referring to are devices that needlessly have integrations via apps, social media or can be simply controlled by connecting them via wifi. These are needlessly more complicated, have more moving parts and these parts are now scarce.
operatorius··on Brain size drives differences in yawn duration across mammals and birds
Doesnt adenosine improve bloodflow to the brain when we are tired? If that is true, increased bloodflow should increase the brain temperature as more blood circulates and exchanges heat
operatorius··on The chip shortage could lead to an era of hardware innovation
I would love to see smart household appliances to vanish from the market completely. Potentially less e-waste, less unsecure devices connected to the net. Let's hope this shortage will push towards that
operatorius··on Movies every physics lover should watch (2020)
> I have never seen anything like it for past 20 years...

If you like this movie's stylistics, I'd recommend you to give Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) a chance!

Both are filmed black and white, both have amazing soundtracks and have industrial and cyberpunk culture influences. The camera work and the cinematography on the tetsuo is beyond epic

operatorius··on Movies every physics lover should watch (2020)
Pi (1998) directed by Darren Aronofsky
operatorius··on The Endless Acid Banger: algorithmic self-composing acid techno music
Evol's mixtape is such an amazing work!

303 different tracks in 13:47

operatorius··on The Endless Acid Banger: algorithmic self-composing acid techno music
Tin Man collaborations with Donato Dozzy on Acid Test eps are one of the best acid tracks Ive ever heard

Also. Rashad Becker masters most of the Dozzy's and Tin Man works. Very betufiful mastering work: so mellow, so clear and spacious. Take a listen of Donato Dozzy - K album on a good system, you'll hear so many details and beautiful spatial placement.

operatorius··on We’ve Got Depression All Wrong. It’s Trying to Save Us
Somewhat related. I suffer from mygraines and I like to think of the attacks that they are caused by some sort of a circuit-breaker that tells me to slow down and take more care of myself
operatorius··on Removing Holocaust Denial Content
Wish this would apply as well to the Armenian genocide denial content and other genocides in general. Cause, you know, there have been many more other genocides throughout the history but apparently there is only one that fits the Western/Eurocentric view

operatorius··on Lungs heal damage from smoking
I have attempted numerous times quitting smoking with no success. During the withdrawls I wasn't able to function properly: blurred vision, couldnt concentrate, mood swings and sleepless nights.

Smoking has a negative impact on my both physical and mental health. I have been smoking for almost 10 years, a pack a day

Could anyone who have successfully quit smoking share your stories and tips?

operatorius··on Why the days seem shorter as we get older
I think that days seem to be shorter due to neuroplasticity and predictability of events that comes from our experience. We can predict new stuff and same old stuff does not excite us. Due to these reasons the amount of new strong memories developed per some time unit reduces as you get older. I think that the sensed speed of time passage is proportionate to the density of new memories we make. We got used to some 'average' of how much we usually experience per day and with that we have our expectations. Now that if I expect 10 new things to happen to me in 1 day and actually 20 of them happens I feel that twice as much of time had passed.

Is there a way to read this article for free somewhere?

operatorius··on Ask HN: Those of you who started companies. Where did you get your idea?
Found a small bug: Was searching for cs + kreme records (cs and kreme) clicked to check for stock on hhv, hardwax, deejay.de and juno

Juno showed expected search results - actual page of the record; hardwax was queried for the label name - total stasis - ok; hhv showed completely irrelevant results although they do not have that record in stock at all; deejay.de query was malformed. An attempt was made to search for "total stasis" (label name) but ended up in searching for total 20stasis.

I've noticed that deejay.de expects to query with whitespace being replaced by a plus sign /total stasis ends up in /total+20stasis and /total+stasis is a correct param that gives the expected results

operatorius··on Making music using new sounds generated with machine learning
well you have pure data, max/msp, reaktor, etc for that. These experiments with ML can approximate the soundwaves generated by particular instruments where the soundwaves produced are very complex, but other than that there are tons of software that can help you design any sounds you like. Machine learning is like the micro thing in the 70's-80's companies are trying to put it everywhere they can despite there are no benefits to the existing convenient products/solutions or not incorporating ml at all but still labeling the product. i.e. quoted from wiki: Microwaves are a form of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging from one meter to one millimeter. I see nowhere the 10^-6 meter waves being used in our commonly used kitchen appliance
operatorius··on Ask HN: What are your best domestic time saving tips?
How bad does the situation have to be that picking up stuff from the ground enables you to move freely?
operatorius··on Ask HN: What sci-fi most resembles the Strugatsky brothers' “Roadside Picnic?”
Would like to add Solaris (Stanislav Lem) as well. Not only Tarkovsky has directed a movie based on Solaris as well, but it definitely has that soviet russian desperate hope of ones achievable freedom. Also the sci-fi part is also very organic as it was in Roadside Picnic
