open··on Ask HN: How much did you sell your startup for?
1] Due to legal reasons as the dollar amount was not publicly announced among other terms agreed upon, I would prefer not to disclose the business name here to avoid any repercussions.

2] If you count from the first line of code written till acquisition... 25 months. If you count from public launch till acquisition... 21 months.

3] We weren't looking to sell. Things just happened that way and the overall reason for selling is a lot more complicated than I'd like to dive into at the moment.

4] Total acquisition valuation was $15M. Since we didn't raise outside capital (no angel or VC investments), there was no dilution. There were two cofounders (myself and one friend) and two early hires that were vested. If it matters, we were cashflow net positive at the time of acquisition with over a dozen employees.

open··on Offer HN: Free Maths Lessons
Honest question. Why specifically just math and not physics or machine learning since those are also things you've specialized in?
open··on Poll: how old were you at you first startup?
I did some entrepreneurial kid stuff at 12 but first real company was at 16. That said, the option for 16-20 and 20-25 are messed up. I assume it was meant to be 21-25.
open··on Ask HN: Anyone else stuck?
Yeah, I'm just picking up new programming languages, learning hardware, and doing various other things at the moment for the sake of learning and mostly just to kill time. I don't have the financial woes anymore but I can understand where you're coming from. There are actually plenty of ideas to make money but that isn't a motivational factor for me. I just want to work on something I personally find exciting.

open··on Ask HN: Finding the right startup
Look at companies you like and look at the job listing there. There isn't really a super comprehensive list. It's much easier to find companies you like and join them. Also to note, unless you're willing to relocate, you might have to see what is available in your area.
open··on Ask HN: Working at a Startup vs. Large Companies
Personal opinion but internship experience is probably going to be better at a startup. Now if you were looking for a job, then it'd probably depend heavily on what your goals are but given the short amount of time an internship generally lasts, you'd do better with startups.

open··on Help Me HN: Can't think of new ideas I am interested on working on
It wasn't in there. Your email is missing as well. I just updated.

Personally I'm not big on ideas that absolutely require scale to succeed. As for market, it really depends on the market and idea as a whole. I prefer consumer facing companies that are not vertical specific.

Don't see your email. The email field in your account settings is not public. You would need to add it to the public profile box (about)

I'm currently burning time learning new programming languages and looking to learn hardware development.

Sorry, not really into the dashboard for businesses thing at the moment
open··on Help Me HN: Can't think of new ideas I am interested on working on
There were multiple reasons but ultimately it was an interesting problem we were solving among various other factors. Your email is not in your profile but if you want to connect, I'm pretty open.
open··on Help Me HN: Can't think of new ideas I am interested on working on
Will do.
open··on Help Me HN: Can't think of new ideas I am interested on working on
Neither. It was originally developed as a solution to solve my own problem. The intention was never to create a startup out of it. It wasn't until a few months later that someone pointed out that I should run with it as a startup. The rest is as they say, history...

Hi Kevin,

I'm located in the SF Bay Area but I'd still love to connect. Will shoot you an email later.

I've tried this but not very many people know what bugs them and the ones that do (albeit few) are things I probably don't want to do. But I greatly appreciate the brainstorming.

Not second but yeah, it's probably something along those lines. I've read many articles he's posted so far. Probably thought HN =]

Thanks Vivtek, I honestly don't think it's being burnt out. After my last startup, I did take a leave and traveled for a bit. I think it's really more of, the ideas I'm coming up with or encountering are just not very interesting to me personally.

Thanks David, I appreciate the offer. I think I'll stick with US base companies for now, it's something I understand more. I don't have any understanding of Malta or the EU and doesn't sound like something I'd want to get into but I genuinely thank you for the offer.
open··on Suggestions for Introduction to CS?
Check out Mehran's Programming Methodology course publicly available on iTunes and Youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=84A56BC7F4A1F852

While the course is called Programming Methodology, the focus of the course is really to teach computer science and what it means to be a computer scientist and teach solid software engineering principles. The language choice really doesn't matter and Mehran has said so himself but they chose Java as it had good OOP principles to teach.

It's by far the absolute best teaching style I've ever personally witnessed and he makes the classes fun and engaging and very easy to learn from.

One thing I would probably have personally changed would be instead of Java, use Python (but that is really a personal preference and bias since I like Python better). Hope that gives you some inspiration. I would try and sit down and watch the first 3 lectures just to check out the style and the way the course is structured.

open··on Ask HN: How to learn to be a self-taught hardware (EE?) engineer?
Thanks for the offer. I definitely agree that diving right in works best but obviously having working knowledge of where to start is important. I'll check out the links you listed and definitely ask any questions that may come up. Thanks again.

I just saw that it's been predicted that a new edition would possibly come out since 2006. I don't suppose you have any updated information regarding this? Thanks for the recommendation BTW, sounds like the gem I've been looking for.
open··on Ask HN: How to learn to be a self-taught hardware (EE?) engineer?
Thanks, I was just checking them out after visiting them at Maker Faire yesterday.
open··on Ask HN: Python or Scheme?
For most intro CS courses, the language is not as important as the lessons being taught. That being said, Python is an amazing language. I don't believe you're missing out on anything that you couldn't otherwise pick up later on if you were interested in learning Scheme as a language itself.
