op00to··on Systemd v259
Why compare a "full-featured", do-everything OS like Ubuntu with something pre-systemd when you're concerned about memory consumption?

I just checked a random debian 12 system (with systemd) running a bunch of services at home, and here's what I see:

$ free -m

total used free shared buff/cache available

Mem: 3791 320 2235 1 1313 3471

Swap: 99 0 99

Seems like usage is pretty much on par with your expectation. The largest consumers are systemd-journal which is storing logs in RAM, and filebeat which is relatively wasteful w/ memory. systemd itself (without the journal buffer log) consumes maybe 20-30 MB.

op00to··on Put SSH keys in .git to make repos USB-portable
When I put my password in plaintext in git it shows up as ****. Can you try with yours and see if the same thing happens? Share the repo with me so I can check!
op00to··on Therapeutic use of cannabis and cannabinoids: A review
Cannabis works great for stress for a week, then it makes things worse for me. A few weeks off, and I can take advantage again.
op00to··on What is the nicest thing a stranger has ever done for you?
I think it’s a combination of incredible weight, lots of aerobic activity, and the cold which masks some of the fatigue that might tell you to take a break. I am over 40, and over an inch or two just pay someone to deal with the snow.
op00to··on CRISPR fungus: Protein-packed, sustainable, and tastes like meat
I used to wonder how the US population could be so stupid to elect someone counter to their best interests, then threads like these remind me that people are really, really bad at logic and such.

op00to··on Torture Techniques from CIA Black Sites Were Used at Alligator Alcatraz
Likely because it is not related to startups, technology, and so on. Probably not the best fit for HN.

You get in the box and tell me it’s not torture. I’ll wait.
op00to··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
And pointing this out adds to the discourse here how?
op00to··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
I’ve lived with enough nightmare roommates in my college experience to know many people probably have some sort of disability that precludes them from having a roommate.

> Viewers are already used to black bars, and we watch lower-resolution content constantly.

This is actually not as common as you think. It is common for "normies" to see 4:3 and think "This is not HD". People really, really hate black bars.

What's more surprising to me is that content providers don't keep stuff in 4:3 and just shove ads on the side.

op00to··on Instagram chief orders staff back to the office five days a week in 2026
This is the exact tech job market to start looking and have interviews/offers scheduled so you're not screwed when layoffs happen.

Solar radiation like solar wind, or sunlight? They don’t say.

I bought a Windows license from a university book store. I can download copies of Windows all day if I want.

Ho ho, some of us still have passports and could be coming to a country near YOU! cough cough

How will we know your digestive health otherwise?
op00to··on Bring bathroom doors back to hotels
I love pooping and having my dog visit. A little someone to talk to rather than scroll.

People make noise when they piss and shit. It’s not scandalous.
op00to··on A monopoly ISP refuses to fix upstream infrastructure
Important legal documents are shipped via FedEx every day. Can’t just ignore it like you ignore regular mail.
op00to··on McDonald's is losing its low-income customers
That’s not what the Nordic data show. Sweden didn’t “end up doing better.” It had by far the worst COVID-19 mortality in 2020, because it kept society open while its neighbors used strict controls.

The only reason Sweden’s later all-cause mortality looks “similar” is mortality displacement: COVID killed so many frail, high-risk people in 2020 that Sweden had fewer dementia and respiratory deaths in 2021–22. Nordic registry papers explicitly note this. Sweden didn’t outperform anyone. Its early losses were just so large that later excess deaths looked artificially low.

Priority or Express mail. FedEx or UPS can also send documents. The idea is to bypass the normal mail room as much as possible and to get the thing on the desk of someone who is not limited by stupid rules.
op00to··on A monopoly ISP refuses to fix upstream infrastructure
Send the letter via overnight mail - or better yet, FedEx. Mail goes to a mail room which may or may not be screened. FedEx seems far more “important”, and make it to the executive’s assistant’s desk who is far more likely to act on it.
op00to··on A monopoly ISP refuses to fix upstream infrastructure
Executive Email Carpet Bombing no longer works well, even with a cogent, calm, clear explanation of the issue and what you want them to do. At best it gets sent to a customer service manager, but in my experience it often gets sent to a black hole.
op00to··on A monopoly ISP refuses to fix upstream infrastructure
Twitter support escalation worked in the mid 2010s, but basically now the only effective escalation is to send a letter via overnight mail to the CEO office. This has worked for me for major ISPs, cell phone companies, furniture retailers, hell - even the government after some vital records I asked to get duplicates of came unreadable 5 times in a row.
op00to··on A monopoly ISP refuses to fix upstream infrastructure
No, that’s in literally every LLM generated response to a forum message I’ve seen. It’s so common as to have become a trope. That’s not confidence. It’s a clear indicator of AI.
op00to··on McDonald's is losing its low-income customers
You remember incorrectly.

Norway and Sweden took opposite approaches in 2020—Norway used strict lockdowns, tight border controls, and intensive outbreak tracking, while Sweden kept society largely open. The results weren’t subtle. As the Juul paper puts it: “That resulted in 477 COVID-19 deaths (Norway) and 9,737 (Sweden) in 2020, respectively.” Source: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8807990/

op00to··on Okta's NextJS-0auth troubles
People move on from issues. You apply a workaround, and the fix is no longer needed. Not every issue opened needs a fix. We all have limited resources, and prioritize the most important stuff to fix.
