Haha - this. Or next quarter etc
onphonenow··on Small SaaS banned by Cloudflare after 4 years of being paying customer
This is the big issue. There is always tension in these “free” setups.

I get more worried when the giveaways / marketing is VC funded - they often end at some point or pressure inside to dial back etc.

“We have free egress to Oceania!” - no, you don’t. You are subsidizing that.

Given what aws charges and how they charge for almost everything- no reason to be any pressure to move me to another plan. AWS free tiers are relatively minuscule

Thanks - very interesting
onphonenow··on The limits of "computational photography"
A very long article but I’m slightly confused. Is he using proraw? Can you not get unprocessed images from proraw?

I’m not sure what the pipeline looks but I thought this type of situation was where pro raw was supposed to be used?

onphonenow··on Apple’s Mac security is so good, it’s sending used M1 MacBooks to the scrap heap
If you were around when phone theft was a thing on BART and Muni you'd never sit near a door again :) It was comical how bad it was and how little the govt did about it other than demand apple fix the issue. Would have been trivial to have an undercover cop on their phone near a door all day - they'd have caught tons of criminals.

That said, at least for phones activation lock was game changing. Not sure about laptops, maybe they can't ID them or fewer activate lock or there is a way to use them in a claim scam (ie, damage and "return" laptops while reselling the real one?)

onphonenow··on Apple’s Mac security is so good, it’s sending used M1 MacBooks to the scrap heap
I'm not saying they can't figure it out, but there is a lot of repair flow stuff that may not do that because if the person didn't unlock before mailing not that many will unlock after mailing? Or even know how to?
onphonenow··on Apple’s Mac security is so good, it’s sending used M1 MacBooks to the scrap heap
Apple is explicit about making sure lock is off when buying - and at least apple won’t pay out on an unlocked phone reported “stolen”. But yes - the scams migrate.

Stolen product still had some value via bogus warranty claims because that process didn’t always cross check lock status because item was “broken” or wouldn’t turn on and apple doesn’t always put serial number externally visible. If person fixed laptop they’d find it was locked. All that has tightened up I think?

onphonenow··on Apple’s Mac security is so good, it’s sending used M1 MacBooks to the scrap heap
I don’t think asurion spends the time to do the reset flow if the lock is showing as on. In most cases users don’t turn off lock after the fact. I thought reset flow was needed to get network connectivity back which is needed to check lock status.

I think you used to be able to run stolen phones back through insurance claims as broken but I think that has stopped being possible as they take a harder line.

onphonenow··on Apple’s Mac security is so good, it’s sending used M1 MacBooks to the scrap heap
The reduction in iPhone theft after activation lock was remarkable in the Bay Area. Did the person writing the article confirm none of these were stolen?

Owners can now remove devices via web site I think. So if folks are saying these are just broken, have owner turn off activation lock

onphonenow··on Chipotle Goes on Hiring Spree of 15,000 Amid Strong Growth
Interesting- I wonder if new staff issues or changes in menu for food safety- we also dialed back for disappointing food but thought just local store. I am rooting for them - far less fried food and far less sugar
onphonenow··on Hyperscale in your Homelab: The Compute Blade arrives
It’s a fantastic board spec. Timing with them on availability can take longer. If they can get VMware compatible would be great. Because they have dual 10g you need no network card in most cases. AM5 integrated graphics allows bring up / troubleshooting with no additional card (if remote console not working well). My use case I’d trade an extra m2 slot for a pci slot but can see their approach. These boards fit in nice compact setups as a result because u can run no pci and no hd setups
onphonenow··on Hyperscale in your Homelab: The Compute Blade arrives
I’ve been getting good price/perf just doing the top AMD consumer CPU’s. Wish someone would make an AM5 platform motherboard with out of band / remote console mgmt. that really is a must if you have a bunch of boxes and have them somewhere else. The per core speeds are high on these. 16 core / 32 threads/boxe gets you enough for a fair bit.
onphonenow··on Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight
I thought there was going to be a slow build in users as folks got sick if Facebook etc.

It was nicely contenty and bloggy feeling.

onphonenow··on Ceremonial security and cargo cults
Agreed totally. I had a nightmare govt double vpn situation. Very hard to get an account, you had to run ancient OS and Java (it would annoy you with warnings about lack of security/age) and comical password complexity / rotation rules. The result was rampant password sharing but also because you had this double vpn setup, each layer rotating - folks just couldn’t remember passwords. So they outsourced password reset. To reset your passwords you provided your 100% predictable username - that was it. Even I had to get a reset due to an inactivity lockout and I had to laugh at how easy it was after all the silliness - I could have given any username
onphonenow··on Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight
Google+ was good until google lost its mind and started shoving it everywhere- even I as a google+ user HATED this.

It was to me the social network for grownups without the Facebook clickbait - I liked the circles model too (I did one for professional stuff one for personal) and great photos support.

But then someone was put in charge who lost their mind and just started wrecking products (YouTube etc) with plus and it was chaos.

onphonenow··on NRC Certifies First U.S. Small Modular Reactor Design
I'd check out something like oil which is a large and high dollar market.

The relationship between production and price is well established, and no, production does not move inversely to price. This is because the marginal cost in almost any of these areas is higher per unit of production as production increases. That also of course makes sense logically.

Gold as well, same thing. You start by grabbing gold nuggets of the ground. The effort to mine more gold has not gotten easier, it's gotten harder over time.

onphonenow··on NRC Certifies First U.S. Small Modular Reactor Design
It's interesting because coder is very locked into their view on one price.

I don't know lithium at all, but if you follow natural gas / fracking / oil production the question of what reserves are economically recoverable is HIGHLY price dependent (and highly variable). On low end $10-15/barrel cost of production or better. The only reason we have any production in the US is because oil costs more. If you said we would double oil usage prices would spike incredibly.

Same thing with solar net metering, Solar activists demand that soler gen (often during periods with solar curtailments already in effect) be reimbursed based on the same cost as electric rates during the evening (usually peak demand and low solar / wind). Again, depressing how economically nonsensical this all is for a supposedly scientifically grounded effort.

Anyways, rational heads (and economic forces) tend to prevail. I think we will see more TOU rates, and ideally this will at least create some market forces around storage.

onphonenow··on Choosing a Postgres primary key
I really hate this trend away from basic IDs. I feel like it's driven by folks who've never actually worked in the real world. I got account paperwork recently where the company ID account ID and invoice ID were all uuids. 100% this company if I call them will not use this BS to lookup my account and will instead use something easier try to guess like a company phone number.

I also had to do some support tickets recently and because of the issues copying uuids from the screen they insisted on screenshots that included the url bar showing uuid. 100% trying to tell them the ID over try the phone or even rekey would run into issues.

Give me back my sequential invoice ids!

onphonenow··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
I thought this was a reason Europe has struggled in tech a bit - hard to try things out. I also thought this was why lots is “on contract” - it’s better not to bring people into your actual team (which must have some negatives)
onphonenow··on Apple Card responsible for more than $1.2B loss for Goldman Sachs
Article seems weak but Apple Card does not sync to personal finance packages so at least for some users a no go. I’d guess impact is small but I’d imagine users paying attention to spend might have stronger credit?

The ads I see for the Apple Card are about rebuilding my credit.

onphonenow··on Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
Lath and plaster can be extremely expensive to repair. Sealing old houses has problems in terms of moisture- many old houses depend on evaporation in various ways- list goes on
onphonenow··on Amazon S3 now automatically encrypts all new objects
Does anyone have rough numbers on s3 scale? Most storage classes have redundant copies as well so 3x things maybe from that. YouTube / S3 - a few services seem like they must have crazy storage scale
onphonenow··on Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
The issue I’ve seen is need for heat goes up a LOT in older houses when it gets that cold, and the heat pump without resistive heat performs a lot worse (like 2x+ worse).

So it’s a noticeable combination

onphonenow··on Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
The lie / part skipped is while they “work” to those temps, they don’t work well.
onphonenow··on Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
The key issue is despite claims that cold doesn’t affect heat pumps it absolutely does. We have an old house. When very cold the heat pump struggles to put out enough heat. It works well enough, but something to be aware off - go bigger in system than you think you need maybe
onphonenow··on Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
Some cautions

- noticeably lower heat output at cold temps.

- install is important, many installs done get adequate ventilation- so cold air collects near unit.

- high ceilings can be an issue, evaluate fans to bring heat down

- gas is amazing for heating in radiant heat. We really like our radiant heat experience- global warmth and good volume

- I’m not sure if tech term, but heat volume can be an issue. We are in a 100+ year old house. The heat pump in very cold weather seems able to generate heat, but no where near quantity that gas system did if you just cranked it

- we are getting hit with tier three electric rates - switched dryer to electric etc - costs get tough!

onphonenow··on The Collapse of U.S. Healthcare – The Perspective of a Primary Care Physician
I’ve been on paperwork side of health a small bit.

1) cash pay / direct / concierge

Agreed - especially if employer plan not great. Some of these folks do house calls. I did this for a while

2) high income area

Sadly agreed. Even in a city if a hospital is more accessible etc that can be tough. I did a walk in to sf general once a long while back - took me 20 minutes to walk out. Great hospital, but waiting room was nuts. Had a finger burned being an idiot and got seen very quickly at a different sf hospital - night and day difference in waiting room

3) mixed view on this. Kaiser brings some peace of mind - grandfathered hsa plans w 2k deductible and some free base car not a bad experience - key for me is not coordinating/ dealing w multiple bills. Their issue resolution team is terrible though on billing

onphonenow··on Python 2 removed from Debian
That’s not true at all - in high compliance industries if the dependency has been validated and is working changing it brings risk.
onphonenow··on Python 2 removed from Debian
Does no one work in a business? Does no one work with science instruments purchased more than 5 years ago? Businesses have lots of useful dependencies that have not ported. If you are running a payroll system and it’s working, there is a real aversion to going to a new code base, and the cost benefit is not there for many businesses. You do realize python 2 is downloaded 3 million times per month now? Yes that’s down - but it’s not nothing - probably 300 - 400 thousand plus users easily
onphonenow··on Python 2 removed from Debian
I like black and python 3 - but that’s pretty funny! In fairness black is opinionated on purpose - even if it understood u”” it’d remove it if it’s targeting 3 probably because it tries to reformat to one style. Amazing how long the ripples last though
