one2three4··on Jolie, the service-oriented programming language
I'm talking about the initial reception Scala had from a lot of people in Java community. Btw downvotes further confirm my views of them as being overly conservative and hostile to different views.
one2three4··on Jolie, the service-oriented programming language
With all due respect but why not changing the software ecosystem? Is enterprise Java the pinnacle of SW engineering? Last time I checked it seemed to me that it's share is being eaten away slowly but steadily from Golang which is deemed to be a far better option for modern cloud-based enterprise apps. Not to mention the significantly better (aka simpler) programming model with all the benefits that it brings. Also, younger devs are shying away from the language and the platform -and this is far deeper than just a generational thing.

So to me, if I were invested in JVM (I'm not), a language that looks to bridge JVM with microservices/cloud would be great news. But instead I only see pushback from Java community. And this is not the first time I see it as well. Same exact behavior to functional efforts such as Scala or anything functional really. A kind of "we're fine we don't need anything new" which I cannot understand.

one2three4··on Jolie, the service-oriented programming language
Wow. This looks really promising. I always found it a bit awkward that you have to bend the other languages to fit in the microservices model. I mean, yes, it's easy to do so in some of them but still there always seems to be a lot of boilerplate that you have to reiterate again and again. I think it was about time to have a language that takes care of the basics. Another one that I had in mind was ballerina (https://ballerina.io/) but unsure how it actually fares so far.

Interested to hear production or even PoC stories on both of them.

Thanks for sharing.

one2three4··on Nim 2.0 thoughts
How's Nim faring with regards to easy programming for multicores? (I think that's the main selling point of Go).
one2three4··on Niall Ferguson: The Next Global Disaster Is Already on Its Way
That's what I think as well. What I really want to see is proof though and then the answer to the burning question: so if due to negligence these guys caused immeasurable losses...who's paying for that? I can't believe that the answer to that will be nobody. This was not an act of God (I think that's the legal term for non-manmade catastrophes where it doesn't make sense to ask for reparations).

And I don't only refer to the initial mistake but also the subsequent ones by both China state and the Western states neglecting WHO etc.

one2three4··on EU citizens arriving in UK being locked up and expelled
Why don't they already? Seems 100% unfair. It's almost impossible for non EU citizens to enter Europe and look for a job if they come from Africa for instance. Why should it be easier for UK citizens?
one2three4··on Israel's Iron Dome proves successful against Gaza rockets
Yes. To be fair the intercepted rockets are not very sophisticated but still it's amazing.
one2three4··on Uber used 50 Dutch shell companies to dodge taxes on $6B in revenue
Ireland, is far from a rocky poor outcrop. A look at the cost of living indexes will convince anyone. And what is frequently missed on it is that this -surreal COL- is yet another form of indirect taxation on the salaries of people. So, it's a bit more sinister than letting the companies tax evade. Ireland is moving the tax burden down to its workers, out to the rest of EU and off the big companies and the landlords lobby.

Also "others are not playing well either" is not a convincing argument. Ireland is on par with Cayman islands and similar tax havens on a whole another level - unlike any of the countries that you're pointing at.

> I can’t tell if everything is at stake, or nothing is at stake. All I know is that I am being tested, and whether or not I am offered this job will depend on the appetite and mood of strangers.

As someone who has been interviewing a lot lately this hits as close to home as possible. There are times where this sense of helplessness is nauseating.

> I can’t believe I spent so many hours begging universities to hire me, I forgot to learn how to separate the chaff from the wheat and gently grind.

That one too. I'm thinking of that quite often lately. I've spend countless hours just to stay sharp in computer engineering but I know almost nothing of basic survival skills. If things are to go seriously South I'll have almost no skills to deal with it.

Anyhow that was beautiful prose.

one2three4··on The mortifying ordeal of pairing all day
They can't. That's how the author got burned out. To my experience PP is to a large extend a way (for the management) to make sure that people are not slacking. As for the burnouts...
one2three4··on How to survive a toxic workplace and how to avoid creating one
I'm sorry but I don't share your sentiment here. You were asked a fair bit about difficult personalities. That is you were warned as much as HR could warn you. And then you jump into the role totally oblivious to that aspect and you go about focusing only on engineering. I mean, and it's typical for engineers, there are _always_ way more moving parts in businesses than machines. But you always focus there and take pride of it. Yet, the most difficult challenges are people - not machines. So, you did effectively nothing to detect where the people problem lied and prepare the ground to deal with that as well. And when that blew in your face you just left and say the story like there was nothing you could do about it.
one2three4··on Doctors investigate mystery brain disease in Canada
I skimmed through it but my understanding is that this is not a prion outbreak. At least the relevant tests come back negative. Did I get it wrong?
one2three4··on The Tragic Story of Vernon and Oswald (2016)
Who's they? And more interestingly when trying to contact google with above information I bumped to wall. How does one contact google? There's no contact-us link unless you're a member of press.

Edit: TBH I'm a bit mad at google and all the rest of internet behemoths for this. The magnitude and breadth of his contribution should have drawn their focus and support to his family long ago. It is unacceptable that they (the family) should rely on the kindness of random strangers to make ends meet.

one2three4··on The Tragic Story of Vernon and Oswald (2016)
I don't understand. When trying to make a donation paypal lands me on a page where I need to link a credit card. Is that necessary?
one2three4··on Why porn industry comes with a stigma even in the technical world?
I can see the parallels with fighting. I'm sure there are countless shady and illegal matches and what-not (rotten apples) but official fighting (MMA and the like) are very much revered or at least not considered unethical.
one2three4··on Launch Your App: Why We Don’t Use Docker (We Don’t Need It)
What makes you assume that all people have or even want docker runtime in their machines? Not to mention all the security headaches it brings with it.
one2three4··on The more complex crypto seems, the higher the pyramid schemes can go
That. Combined with the fact that so many productive people and healthy business have limited or no access to it.
one2three4··on 5G: The outsourced elephant in the room
This is gold.

>> In reality, most service providers have not been operating on this model for decades. Driven by balance-sheet mechanics and consultants, service providers have been highly incentivised to outsource anything that could possibly be outsourced, and then some.

>> In a modern telecommunications service provider, new equipment is deployed, configured, maintained and often financed by the vendor. Just to let that sink in, Huawei (and their close partners) already run and directly operate the mobile telecommunication infrastructure for over 100 million European subscribers.

I think it's quite a safe bet that no operator in China went that way by buying and outsourcing from/to Western companies.

one2three4··on Why Spy Agencies Say the Future Is Bleak
Not much. But I guess COVID did much more to this front than the aggregate of the policies of decades before that.
one2three4··on Things I was asked to do while job hunting
Looking for either a remote or Germany-based role. Either SRE or Backend dev.
one2three4··on Things I was asked to do while job hunting
Nope. That's a skill as well. Practice a bit and you'll be flying through them.
one2three4··on Things I was asked to do while job hunting
"How you hire is who you hire." I like that. Reminds me of "You optimize what you measure".

The thing is that they can do it. It's a buyers market - that is if you consider sellers the people selling their know-how and time for a living.

one2three4··on Things I was asked to do while job hunting
That's not much of a problem. At least not for me. I pass most of these interviews. But still... Anyway. It's probably too early to get to conclusions but I just wanted to highlight that it has been abnormally hard, long and at times surreal up to now.
one2three4··on Things I was asked to do while job hunting
Best of luck with your endeavor.
one2three4··on Things I was asked to do while job hunting
I feel for him but honestly what he's been through is small potatoes. Been looking in earnest for 1 month now. I've done about 10 take-homes, 20 codility-style, a couple personality and IQ ones, numerous screens...

Yes. Hiring is totally broken. And/or there is an glut of devs out there to the point where landing a decent offer is really hard if you're going the traditional way (i.e. not having someone from inside rooting for you).

My job market is EU.

one2three4··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
I'm sure there was not a hint of intimidation from the company...
one2three4··on After working at Google, I’ll never let myself love a job again
* There's no right to free speech in the workplace.

* Age discrimination exists.

* Why being too smart is not too smart.

* Human Resources is not there to help you, but to protect the company from you

That's just from the back of the book.

OK. I need to read this.

one2three4··on Left-wing party opposed to rare earth mining project wins Greenland election
I'm curious to see whether this will end up like Bolivian coup.

The advent of electric cars made rare earths equivalent to oil.

I wouldn't wish to any small/weak country to have significant reserves of them.

one2three4··on The antidote to civilisational collapse – An interview with Adam Curtis (2018)
There is fire to that smoke though. Bolibian rare earths was the main reason for the coup.
