onceiwasthere··on Strong earthquake hits northern Japan, tsunami warning issued
Your comment prompted me to go read about epicenters and I learned something new. The hypocenter of an earthquake is apparently the point of origin of the earthquake and the epicenter is the point on the earth's surface directly above the hypocenter. Had never heard of a hypocenter before.
onceiwasthere··on Cleo, the Mysterious Math Menace
What’s stopping someone from just taking the derivative of a crazy expression, asking stackexchange what the integral is, then answering it themself with what they already know is the anti-derivative
onceiwasthere··on Kalman filter from the ground up
I think this is really wild and interesting. In my experience, they (more like specializations of the Kalman filter) are used almost universally in radar tracking. I'm curious where outside of academia you see ridicule for Kalman Filters?
onceiwasthere··on The quest for a simple smartwatch
I've been (kind of) successful with this with my Apple Watch SE and Honda Civic. The issues arise when I have both my phone and watch in the car and it wants to connect to the watch. Then things get confused and don't work out the way you would want. With just the watch, however, it seems to work fine.

On a related note, I've had significant issues trying to play music through airpods through the watch. I can get it to connect, and it plays a few seconds of music, then goes silent. The screen still indicates its playing. Very frustrating.

onceiwasthere··on How To Get Started In Soldering
It's kind of interesting how handling this well varies from hobby to hobby and is tricky to balance from person to person. There's the argument that you don't want to spend too much until you get a feel for how interested you are but there's also the effect of quality of tools on enjoyment/annoyance/learning curve that has a big effect on interest a lot of the time. I guess, you're always just gonna wanna google around to get a better idea, but sometimes there's not great googleable info.
onceiwasthere··on Parallel streaming in Haskell: Part 4 – Conditionals and non-blocking evaluation
Irrelevant to article content, but did anyone else find the cookie UX on this site infuriating?
onceiwasthere··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
Is there any regulated/"official" definition to the word "processed" in this context? I see the word so much in the context of food in general and I've never known exactly what it means.
onceiwasthere··on A sand battery could transform clean energy
Not if you keep overbuilding for star and moonlight!
onceiwasthere··on Apple Has Reportedly Rejected TSMC's Chip Price Hike of 6%
Being almost completely uninformed on the details of Apple/TSMC's dealings, I'm curious, would Apple ever position themselves to get into chip fabrication? I'm sure there are big reasons this is unlikely but it seems like if anyone could do it, it's Apple.
onceiwasthere··on Ask HN: What can you realistically manufacture in your garage?
Yeah this seems so strange a thing to do. Maybe they're personalized/ruggedized in some nice way?
onceiwasthere··on Apple Car: Jony Ive’s design, Federighi’s skepticism, the jogger incident
I've wondered the same thing. The only thing I can think of is some kind of god awful false positive rate. Which doesn't really make sense either considering the technology we have today.
onceiwasthere··on Ask HN: Who has ditched their phone and what is your replacement?
I can do this on my cellular Apple Watch. Not quite as easy to fiddle with, but for straight forward stuff in my own city it's quite nice.
onceiwasthere··on Astronomers reveal first image of the black hole at the heart of our galaxy
They want an exciting disruption to current theory.
onceiwasthere··on CXX – safe interop between Rust and C++
I guess if you already have C++ that you'd prefer not to re-write. Also things like graphics programming, while making great strides in rust, are definitely still superior in C++ in certain aspects so you might want to write, say, an OpenGL interface in C++.
onceiwasthere··on James Webb telescope reaches its final destination in space, million miles away
Very true. Although not such an uncommon contrast in Huntsville, AL, where Destin lives.
onceiwasthere··on James Webb telescope reaches its final destination in space, million miles away
If I remember right, his dad was/is very involved in the JWST.
onceiwasthere··on Ask HN: How is life without a smartphone?
Not exactly what you're talking about, but I recently got a cellular Apple Watch and I've been trying to have only that with me as much as possible. I can do all the things on your list from it and my distraction plummets whenever I leave my phone at home and just have the watch. But I still maintain the bare minimum of connectivity and conveniences like music/podcasts/calls (with airpods)/texts/gps. Just not having the ability to open a web browser or reddit while having those less distracting essentials is the perfect balance for me.
onceiwasthere··on Google's infamous internal 2010 “I just want to serve 5TB” video now public
I think it's Goldman Sachs as mentioned in their parent comment.
onceiwasthere··on Retired Husband Syndrome
But the subject of the wiki page is the observed effects on wives (specifically in Japanese culture), not husbands. There's surely plenty of literature out there on how retired people feel.
onceiwasthere··on Ask HN: Why don’t you use Linux as your daily driver OS?
I figure kreetx is referring to bootcamp'd intel Macs running full Linux.
onceiwasthere··on Tesla Engineer Says Musk Overstated Tesla Autopilot Reality
Me. It would honestly be one of the biggest life improvements technology could possibly provide me given it was really and truly autonomous. The amount of extra time it would grant me as well as the amount of driving/traffic stress it would alleviate would be such a huge positive in my life.
onceiwasthere··on Stephen Fry Would Like to Remind You That You Have No Free Will
This is what I always try to ask people. Is there even a possible definition of free will within the laws of physics? It seems to me to be blurry philosophy and nobody has the same definition. Not that it's invalid to talk about if there's no physical framework. But there's no scientific way we can talk about it that I've seen.
onceiwasthere··on I was terrible at crosswords so I built an AI to do them
Something you might be interested in is the OpenAI group's attempt at making a Dota 2 playing AI which, if you're unfamiliar, is a 5v5 imperfect information computer game. The AI they made was able to take games off of many top players/teams. The interesting factor on top of all that is that it isn't a single AI playing as 5 players, its 5 AIs acting independently without communication. Really interesting stuff given how complex a game Dota 2 is.
