ompogUe··on Porygon Was Innocent: An epileptic perspective on the infamous Pokémon episode
It IS weird. Not sure if it helps with the lightening storm going on in their head, but it at least does help calm the situation.

ompogUe··on Porygon Was Innocent: An epileptic perspective on the infamous Pokémon episode
On the other side of the coin: have a kid with epilepsy. After learning about possible effects of K448/Mozart's sonata in D Major, we keep a copy of it on all our phones, and it does seem to relax him when he is having a seizure.

Always thought it was funny that the only other song they had found (up until 2021) with a similar audio signature was from "Yanni Live at the Acropolis"

Also, I found and watched the porygon episode in the last year, and it's certainly pretty intense.

ompogUe··on Ask HN: Junior dev in charge of rewriting 500k line PHP app. Looking for advice
The "Structure" Tool Window (Alt-7 on my install).

I've seen similar in everything from MS Visual Studio to Notepad++, but with PHPStorm it's taken even further and works much better. Really helps with refactoring, since I can do things like get an overview of an API, see what stands out, and "smart rename" methods - which then fixes it throughout the code.

ompogUe··on Ask HN: Junior dev in charge of rewriting 500k line PHP app. Looking for advice
Get Jetbrains PHPStorm: just the ablility to browse classes/functions is worth the price

We use and love codeception for this part: has (php)unit tests and selenium-style integration tests.
ompogUe··on Notepad++ is 21 years old
Me, too! Use mostly Jetbrains these days, but we've been standing up some windows servers, and putting NPP on them - which reminded me of Scintilla: wrote my own turbo-charged IDE on top of it ~22 years ago. That secret sauce led to lots of work.

Have a kid with severe Cerebral Palsy, who would (violently) not understand or appreciate any sort of upgrade/change.
ompogUe··on Servicing a robot vacuum cleaner (2019)
Was a beta tester for some of the early generations.

They were a joy to repair: every part was made to be easily replaced, not "engineered" with glue, or pegs that break.

Could tell it was tech started at the MIT AI Labs.

My #1 favorite Jerry solo is during Brown Eyed Women at that same concert (Barton Hall).

What a show!

Bit of a pain to use sometimes, but I've gotten used to fine-tuning exactly what I allow to run.

ompogUe··on What many people get wrong about culture
Not sure a "national" culture is the right take on such huge countries with so many different regions.

I've lived in the "Cajun Country" of Louisiana and round-the-bay in Newfoundland, and they both have (boat|pirogue|dory)-loads of culture.

ompogUe··on New Way to Deploy Dbt
Be nice to have a little more info about the tool before I create a login.

We're using rundeck (orchestration) -> dbt (pipeline builder) -> db servers -> qliksense+qdc (in-house observability)

ompogUe··on 12 months left to keep Copilot off your desktop or learn Linux
Blew my mind that I could install Teams in Ubuntu. Was both amazed (MS compiling for Linux) and disgusted (MS compiling for Linux).

Though it unfortunately broke with Wayland, so had to move my work machine to Windows using WSL.

ompogUe··on Ask HN: Is the killer app for AR glasses a guardian angel to keep you alive?
> For example, AR glasses could stop you from crossing the street when there is an oncoming car, regardless of what the traffic lights indicate.

Not sure this is the best example: Maybe turning off the AR and using your eyes and ears would work better.

Killer app for me is having the manual about an item I use embedded in a qrcode on the item itself, instead of in a paper book or online.

(Not anti-AR by any means - have been working with it/thinking about it since ~1998)

ompogUe··on Regardless of age, quitting cigarette smoking will add years to your life
Maybe not a useful statistic, but it's definitely 100% not harmless in the correct dosage. It has been successfully used for both murder and suicide. Being water-soluble, just soak tobacco leaves in water and you'll eventually be able to extract a useful amount.

I smoked for >20 years, quit for 10, then started again when dealing with grief after my partner passed away, and smoked for another 10. I get it, literally: high-blood pressure, etc. Although, when quitting, it was always the tar that really drove me crazy.

Another thing I've realized, is that smoking is a double-whammy vector towards heart disease: smoking promotes heart disease directly, but smoking also promotes gum disease, and gum disease promotes heart disease.

ompogUe··on Regardless of age, quitting cigarette smoking will add years to your life
The fatal human dose has been estimated to be about 50 to 60 mg

ompogUe··on How the Airfields of Britain Saved the World [video]
"Passage to Marseilles", which reunited a lot of the cast from "Casablanca" (Curtiz, Bogart, Rains, Greenstreet, Lorre), has a great scene of a British cow farm transforming into an airfield.
ompogUe··on Could reading instruction manuals become a thing of the past?
"AI generated manual" - meh!

AR accessing manual on demand from object's bar code - heh!

ompogUe··on Mimicking the cells that carry hemoglobin as a blood substitute
Was reading yesterday about pioneering female ad-exec Mary Wells Lawrence.

When she was passed up for a promotion, she started her own agency, whose treasurer was "Richard Rich".

ompogUe··on Mimicking the cells that carry hemoglobin as a blood substitute
Reminds me of something I read in one of the Kurzweil books years ago: having nano-blood delivering enough oxygen to stay underwater for 8 hours. Things like that.

The (funny to me) idea that also came from that was that we can remove our digestive systems, because "eating mainly for nutrients" turns into "eating just for enjoyment", and we have a tray in our stomachs that we tap out to empty the chewed food.

ompogUe··on The Future of AR Beyond the Vision Pro Is Already Brewing
We ran future scenarios planning for the Canadian NSF > 20 years ago about this.

One that I really liked was having the instruction manuals for objects available directly from looking at the object (or it's bar code).

ompogUe··on Ask HN: How do you organize and store your cables?
>networking, coaxial, land-line telephones Haha, feel you ... rj-11, rj-45, scsi ...

For music and other gear (projectors, portable electronics first-aid kit), I've been getting into velcro tape so I can find them in the dark: on the machines, remotes, trays, keyboards, usb ports, tripods, hard drives and such.

ompogUe··on Ask HN: How do you organize and store your cables?
Same here! Also found, using printed labels on clear bins helps me find things faster.
ompogUe··on The Ellipsis Is Widening the Gap Between Millennials and Boomers

See it here: the mean-spirited ramblings of a lazy, wanna-be "critical" armchair-quarterback. Get a mac if you want to be a snobby, opinionated consumer. If you really want to make a difference, roll up your sleeves and actually fix just one of these things.
ompogUe··on Ursula Le Guin: the author we should thank for popularizing Schrödinger's cat
Haven't read that one. While my crowd also went to Hain and Earthsea, Robert Anton Wilson's "Schrödinger's Cat Trilogy" is what I recall really got us interested in this idea.
