omgmajk··on The lost joy of music piracy
Go check out ektoplazm.com, electronic music with permissable licenses. Good for the culture of this website. Most things can be downloaded in flac.

Then when you have found a style, soundcloud is likely your home to find stuff and then when you have found it you can either rip it or buy it.

I haven't used a public site since Suprnova so I don't know about the health of public p2p sites at all. The private side is absolutely not stagnant, new sites pop up all the time and you can still find all the niche stuff you want to find by just nudging the enthusiasts with requests.

A lot of them seed from home, with humongous servers, and there are preservation programs going on in various places.

Never bought any merch from what, but I do own a ScT t-shirt :)
omgmajk··on The lost joy of music piracy
Music piracy is alive and well if you know where to look. Some places has been mentioned in this thread already. Of course there is no replacing the magic of early 2000-2010's p2p sites like OiNK, What and Waffles - but well curated sites still exist.
omgmajk··on Claude Code as a Daily Driver: Claude.md, Skills, Subagents, Plugins, and MCPs
Written by an LLM, deployed by an agent to the blog, posted to HN by a bot, upvoted by more bots to market "AI".
omgmajk··on Lost Images from the 1945 Trinity Nuclear Test Restored
Some stunning images, looks like a sun plopped down in the middle of the desert.
omgmajk··on EFF is leaving X
Surely copy-pasting a short text and possibly a link is not actual work that takes time.

All they would need to do is set up some cross-posting pipeline and the work would be pretty much zero.

They could even drive people to click on mastodon/bsky links this way if they wanted people to go to the decentralized web.

This take is not valid.

omgmajk··on Meta Platforms: Lobbying, dark money, and the App Store Accountability Act
Screwing over normal people and their rights is a feature, not a side effect.
omgmajk··on Hacker News.love – 22 projects Hacker News didn't love
This site is blocked by Cisco Corporate Security, so can't read it. I wonder why.
omgmajk··on Show HN: 3D Mahjong, Built in CSS
Two games in a row now I have gotten to a point where the last two pieces are ontop of eachother. I think this is perfectly fine, but seems to happen a little too often. Or I was just very unlucky.

Otherwise it's a sweet game!

omgmajk··on What your Bluetooth devices reveal
Here in Sweden it's uncommon. Especially in big parking lots/houses.
omgmajk··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
Does the Nordea app work on Graphene? I am curious because I have been itching to switch my main phone to an alternate OS.
omgmajk··on Thinking hard burns almost no calories but destroys your next workout
Creatine monohydrate (and seemingly HCL too, though not tested long term) kind of makes me constipated. I'd like to take it, because I lift weights quite often, but it just messes with my stomach too much.
omgmajk··on Resurrecting Crimsonland – Decompiling and preserving a cult 2003 classic game
I used to play a lot of Crimsonland, so this is very nice. I thought the updated version that they later released on Steam never captured the original feeling. The newer game is still fun but the older version is better, gameplay wise.
omgmajk··on Ask HN: What did you find out or explore today?
I haven't looked into Odin that much but I hear it's swell, so maybe I should!
omgmajk··on Ask HN: What did you find out or explore today?
I explored the programming language nim a bit deeper for use in game programming with SDL3 bindings, but I came to find out that compiled nim code on Windows often triggers anti-virus because, from what I hear from people, nim is used a lot in malware development currently. Which is a shame because I really like that language. I haven't tested it myself, it's just things I have heard and read. Someone on r/gamedev told me to write the code in nim, generate C code and then compile it with zig cc.

If anyone has any experience with this, please do chime in :)

omgmajk··on Iran is likely jamming Starlink
In certain subreddits I have seen the idea that there is no revolution, it's all mossad/CIA propaganda. It's quite conspiratorial but it's the same subs that typically love China, NK etc so it's not surprising.

However, I have seen these thoughts spread to more seemingly mainstream geopolitical subs as well. I am not sure how much astroturfing is going on here. Probably quite a lot.

omgmajk··on enclose.horse
Very enjoyable work pastime!

Great stuff :)

omgmajk··on Strange.website
I laughed out loud when I saw computers in blue text, always fun to see a HoL reference.
omgmajk··on Sick of smart TVs? Here are your best options
I do not, but I get what you mean :)
omgmajk··on Sick of smart TVs? Here are your best options
I have a Lenovo used minipc connected to mine and I just use a Logitech K400+, it runs Linux with KDE. I will never need a smart tv, or want one, for that matter.

I get that people would rather have a remote but I personally actually don't like remotes at all. My TV is basically a screen only.

omgmajk··on Average DRAM price in USD over last 18 months
I just checked our local apple store website and going from 48gb of ram on a M4 MacBook Pro it's 1500€ to get 128gb. Seems about the same :E
omgmajk··on Average DRAM price in USD over last 18 months
Same here, I was waiting for DDR5 to come down in prices to upgrade from 32 -> 128gb. Could have done it for 200-300€ a few weeks ago, now I'm just sad.
omgmajk··on Scientists find ways to boost memory in aging brains
You get downvoted, but you are not wrong. People with various anxiety disorders have this problem - and keep remembering all the small mistakes they did in life over the good memories.
omgmajk··on Developers are choosing older AI models
All of those things are hosted on-prem in the bigger orgs I have worked in.
omgmajk··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
Annoys me to no end as well. I don't have an answer for you, but I would like one too.
omgmajk··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
> please port your packages to crates.

This is such a deeply unserious take. Do you have hundreds of thousands of hours to give out for free? No?

omgmajk··on What do we do if SETI is successful?
As far as I can tell the quote comes from Science 2.0's site [0], and is frequently quoted somewhat verbatim in other places like reddit, quora and articles. But I can't really find the original (Carl Sagan) source.

omgmajk··on Exploring IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
Some communities are still heavily invested in IRC. It's good to see the same faces from 10-20 years ago still around.
omgmajk··on Postman which I thought worked locally on my computer, is down
I think this is covered by lifetime fallback license, under pricing->FAQ - but not sure, seems so.
