omgmajk··on Journalists turn in access badges, exit Pentagon rather than agreeing new rules
These quotes are crazy to me, what kind of world are they living in?

> “I think he finds the press to be very disruptive in terms of world peace,” Trump said. “The press is very dishonest.”

omgmajk··on A simple habit that saves my evenings
That's because every person who struggles with sleep has heard this advice a thousand times. It just doesn't work for all of us.

I lift weights, and I make sure to do big muscle groups. I wake up around the same time every day, ish. I do not drink coffee in the afternoon. I do not use blue light screens at night. And any number of other advice that people keep bringing up.

Like the comment above that says if you wake up at 06, you will be tired at 23. Yeah, sure, but you still won't be able to sleep. All that does is make you more tired permanently, but sleep still doesn't happen.

People just do not work the same, some people are really more active at night. And this advice is echoed constantly whenever this topic is brought up.

omgmajk··on There is a huge pool of exceptional junior engineers
> simple ones like FizzBuzz where it's just a quick filter

I stumbled across a thread in r/cscareerquestions or maybe r/cscareers a while ago where several people argued that fizzbuzz was too hard because: "no-one is using the modulus operator in day to day work, so it's not something one should be expected to remember."

I found it very funny and draining at the same time.

omgmajk··on The elegance of movement in Silksong
This is so real, Dark Souls has helped me immensely in keeping my concentration up for work and other things in life. It's very good at teaching you lessons that translate to real life.
omgmajk··on Take something you don’t like and try to like it
Are you me? I feel like this 100% mirrors myself. I've been slowing down the learning, I have a list of things I need to get myself to learn but I just can't find the energy to poke and prod. But I have started reading more books again.
omgmajk··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
BankID is owned by a cartel of our biggest banks but effectively, in real life, is basically mandatory. It's used with (mostly) everything here and it's hard to get a new one if you let some other things slip, like your passport or national ID card.
omgmajk··on The Synology End Game
About a year ago I did the opposite, I bought an ASUSTOR and noticed the software was terrible, didn't want to fiddle too much with it because it was within return to store range still. Returned it and got a Synology. Then they released their updated plans a while later.
omgmajk··on Ask HN: Is your company forcing use of AI?
Forced, no. The consulting company that employs me is talking about AI constantly and our internal viva engage is full och people talking about it. None of them are programmers.

The client I work at, through them, has made some tools available but no-one is using them for anything.

omgmajk··on Ask HN: To anyone who cares to read this. How old are you roughly?
Turned 40 this year. Started coding as a teenager but didn't work with it until more recently.
omgmajk··on Last fifty years of integer linear programming: Recent practical advances (2024)
Since I can't edit the original comment, this seems to be untrue now but when I originally clicked the link from here it 100% did download the pdf directly, I tested it twice.
omgmajk··on Last fifty years of integer linear programming: Recent practical advances (2024)
But downloads a pdf.
omgmajk··on Can It Run Doom? An Archive of All Known Ports
Ah, Doom in Grafana Visualizations - finally I can rip and tear at work.
omgmajk··on Hacker News now runs on top of Common Lisp
Read earlier in the thread that they run the open sourced version https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44099315
omgmajk··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
I'm working on a isometric rpg/turn based strategy game with a sci-fi theme, currently in the writing and design phase with very little code done. It's gonna be a multi-year project. Nothing to show, sadly :(
omgmajk··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket and Fakespot
It's a shame, I have been a Pocket user for a long time and I use it daily with my Kobo e-reader now. It was also a little money from me every month for Mozilla, I use Firefox so I felt like it was worth it.
omgmajk··on Show HN: I vibecoded a 35k LoC recipe app
This is the funnies thing I have read all week. :D
omgmajk··on Show HN: Seven39, a social media app that is only open for 3 hours every evening
Local social media used to be huge here in Sweden, we had options for everyone long before facebook or x/twitter was a thing. Great times.
omgmajk··on Sci-fi books that you may never have heard of, but definitely should read
This is really a reddit moment but I can't resist, username truly checks out.

To add something to the conversation I am reading the expanse right now and I really like it. It's the mix of goofy and dark that gets me.

omgmajk··on Ask HN: What Are You Learning?
I'm trying to start making games so I am learning graphics programming at the moment, and some physics. Currently work primarily with automation and embedded so it's quite different.
omgmajk··on IrfanView
I still use IrfanView to this day, all the way back since mid 90'ies. It's a fantastic piece of software with a great legacy and I wouldn't trade it for any modern photo software. So snappy and functional, works like a charm. With the plugins added to it you can open literally any image.
omgmajk··on Canva has acquired Affinity in an effort to compete with Adobe
It's not really hard to see why though. Software which only real saving grace is a better license model than the bigger fish gets bought by another bigger fish to ultimately, most likely, get put in the same license model.
omgmajk··on Tech has graduated from the Star Trek era to the Douglas Adams age
I see this stuff more and more, maybe like four times in the last week just from links I have clicked from the HN frontpage. Other visitors, doing their thing. I really dislike it.
omgmajk··on Castle Engine – Free open-source cross-platform 3D/2D game engine using Pascal
Most comments in this thread reminds me of the discussion we had under a discussion about Fortran recently, here's the comment thread regarding Pascal https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38966342
omgmajk··on “When you use a Walkman all the memories come back”: In love with old tech
It's why I listen to a lot of vinyls. During the day/at work/gaming/coding I generally go for Spotify, but when doing chores, cooking or hanging out with the missus we listen to whole albums a lot.
omgmajk··on Dracula Theme for Hacker News
Dark reader crashes too much and too often for my liking. I still use it but I would love for an alternative to emerge.
omgmajk··on Dracula Theme for Hacker News
Dang said it was due to a single user sending lots of emails about the orange icon looking bad on the christmas theme HN uses for the top bar (orange on red).
omgmajk··on The Uncomfortable – a collection of deliberately inconvenient objects
I did not, but now I really want to read the site.
omgmajk··on The Uncomfortable – a collection of deliberately inconvenient objects
Site is, in fact down.

omgmajk··on Due to blade damage, Mars Helicopter Ingenuity will not fly again
Three years and over 70 flights. That is pure wonder! RIP little guy, you did well.
