omega3··on Zoom lays off 15% of employees
I'm guessing it goes back to the 70-20-10 employee grading nonsense.
omega3··on Ask HN: Where to get help with a hardware idea?
Perhaps you could bring your idea to your local hackerspace.
omega3··on Amazon to Lay Off over 17,000 Workers, More Than First Planned
What do you mean that they aren’t even good programmers?
omega3··on A collection of 88x31 pixel web buttons from the 1990s and 2000s
Penguin Computing is larger than 88x31.
omega3··on Goodbye, data science
> Data engineers don't work with machine learning at all.

This very much depend on the company. From experience DE is used as a catch-all title.

omega3··on Voice assistants are not doing it for big tech
"Someone has to say it:" It's weird that they are pretending to do some cutting edge/against-the-grain journalism/research in this article.
omega3··on Eli Lilly stock fell by $20B because of a fake tweet about free insulin
I'm guessing it's an equivalent to an expensive watch, fashion label handbag, reddit gold, video game skin.
omega3··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
We'll see, my bet is that nothing catastrophic will happen as a result of layoffs and hiring freeze at Twitter.
omega3··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
Twitter doesn't need "best people" - it's not innovating and hasn't been for a very long time.
omega3··on Swiss evoting system – IsProbablePrime is incorrect for input 19
Could someone explain why they've used a constant sp instead of hardcoding the primes? How was it created, did someone manually hardcoded the bits then converted into a number?
omega3··on Tell HN: Getting Ready for Unemployment
It's possible there aren't opportunities in your city/country. Did you look into relocation or remote work? There are companies that organize relocation, set up etc. I know in Poland for example they accept pretty much everyone with a heartbeat due to demand.
omega3··on Hacker And The Fed
In the 2min intro the fed claims he took down Anonymous. Interesting.
omega3··on Making energy too cheap to meter
> Summary: If energy is free and doesn't impact anything then of course you would want to use more of it.

I'm not convinced if this is always the case. I'm sure this is already a topic of interest in psychology but I guess that unless there is a reward for using the energy there wouldn't be consumption on the individual level.

As I'm writing this my CPU is at 2% and GPU at 1% utilization. I'm not actively looking for ways to utilize this even though it's (for the sake of argument) free.

omega3··on Westinghouse to be sold for $7.9B in sign of nuclear power revival
It seems crazy that for 1/3 of the cost of Figma you can buy a company that has 9k employees and can build you a nuclear reactor.
omega3··on Expectations of professional software engineers
Having worked in Unity I'd take engineering advice from their top execs with a grain of salt.
omega3··on Ask HN: Books for Reevaluation of Life
Philip Su - Man’s Search for Baby Wipes, Pampers Sensitive Water Based Baby Diaper Wipes, Hypoallergenic and Unscented, 8 Refill Packs (Tub Not Included), 72 each, Pack of 8 (Packaging May Vary) in A/12/B/135
omega3··on Ask HN: Has the Internet Become a Burden?
What we're seeing now is a continuous dilution of the original internet culture of hackers and nerds: selfless knowledge sharing, narrow, specialized communities, critical thinking, valuing intelligence. Content was produced by people who were objectively passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. This content was then peer-verified, shared and discussed which ensured quality.

Nowadays everyone is a content creator, the quality and originality of the content is not important. Contrarian ideas, not following trends is a sure way to loose views, subscribers.

The hackers are holed up in their information bubbles and have no impact on the internet culture and the internet as a whole.

omega3··on From Burned Out Tech CEO to Amazon Warehouse Associate
He could have just played Farming Simulator.
omega3··on Google’s “million’s of search results” are not being served
I've noticed plenty of websites now do this.
omega3··on Pressure leaks hit undersea Nord Stream pipelines
By Taiwan.
omega3··on Pressure leaks hit undersea Nord Stream pipelines
Potentially sending gas via this pipeline was one of the last remaining bargain cards for Russia. In case of harsh winter they could use it to pressure European countries (cough Germany cough) into lifting the sanctions. There is no logical reason as to why Russia would have been attacking it's own pipeline.
omega3··on Reading Soviet Sci-Fi at the End of the World
By the same logic a writer from Turkey which was part of Western Bloc should be called a western writer? What about a writer from Japan?
omega3··on Reading Soviet Sci-Fi at the End of the World
I'm sorry if the response was blunt, nevertheless people really have to take a responsibility for their education and not make inflammatory comments about history of the parts of the world they don't understand or are unwilling to understand.

There is plenty of information regarding history of Lviv and this region in general. It's long and sad, tragic and sometimes beautiful but never simple.

Besides, I found that most people who feign ignorance know history very well and use it for their own agenda. If you know what to search in someone post history it becomes more or less obvious.

omega3··on Reading Soviet Sci-Fi at the End of the World
Even if he was a communist it still wouldn't make him soviet.
omega3··on Reading Soviet Sci-Fi at the End of the World
> I don't know enough history

Clearly.

omega3··on Reading Soviet Sci-Fi at the End of the World
I think he's either intellectually lazy or dishonest vis a vis my other comments. Even the publishing date in this case is suspect, every single source I could find it lists it as 1992 and not 1991. Either way I'd expect better from someone who is an University teacher.

> PATRICK MCGINTY (...) teaches in the Department of Languages, Literatures, Cultures, and Writing at Slippery Rock University

omega3··on Reading Soviet Sci-Fi at the End of the World
Poland was never part of Soviet union.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union

omega3··on Reading Soviet Sci-Fi at the End of the World
Lem wasn't Soviet, he was Polish. It's strange he also considers Victor Pelevin to be a Soviet writer as all his novels were released after 1991.
omega3··on Effects of grill patterns on fan performance/noise (2011)
I think a more interesting question would be whether the design actually makes any difference or if the airflow just depends on the free/unobstructed area.
omega3··on Ask HN: About to have a child, completely burnt out at my job, what do I do?
Could you perhaps please list the courses you're referring to?
