olowe··on 'The tyranny of apps': those without smartphones are unfairly penalised
Imagine the entire UI of an email client becoming inoperable, diplaying "loading..." and a spinner every time you send mail. We don't do it now nor did we do that when 300kbps connections were more common. Spinners are a crutch for undercooked, bad software.

olowe··on Turning Down Upspin Infrastructure
Sad. As a fan of Plan 9 myself it’s somewhat expected. The ideas are strong but there’s something about it all not quite catching on.

I regularly referred others to Upspin’s source tree [1] if they wondered about larger systems written in Go but weren’t too big and gross like Kubernetes.

olowe··on Everyone says Chrome devastates Mac battery life, but does it? 36 hour test
Because it’s barebones. Most of the time I’m on my Mac I use “regular” apps; I never really used web apps much (on my Mac nor on my OpenBSD/linux machines)
olowe··on Firefox update added more sponsored content on new-tab page
In my `about:config`:

  browser.startup.homepage about:blank
  browser.newtabpage.enabled false
My workstation is too slow to load these new "Home" pages anyway!
olowe··on IANA's List of Domain Name System (DNS) Parameters
Do you mean the binary message format or something higher level?

I’ve got a little DNS client/server library in Go [1], and I’m curious whether there’s a minimal subset of the binary format I could handle myself so my library only depends on the Go standard library. Any tips?
