ollybee··on In Search of Mary Shelley review: A life of monsters and men
This has been BBC radio 4's book of the week and as such has been serialised in 5 15 minute parts which will be available on iplayer to UK residents for the next month. I've certainly enjoyed it. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09ms55g
ollybee··on In the Middle Ages, the Upper Class Went Nuts for Almond Milk
The protected food names scheme makes a lot of sense If a food label highlights a regional traditional food then it must come from that area if they have applied for protection. Seems in consumers and manufacturers best interest. Here's a map of British protected foods, I see none I would contest: https://goo.gl/tyE4Bm
ollybee··on Grafana: Postgres Data Source
I've found the opposite to be true, once you get into the knotty gritty there's so much that can be customized to different use cases. You can have different organisations and 4 levels of user roles. Lots of ways to handle authentication, a great API so everything is scriptable and lots more. It may not quite fit your needs but there's been a lot of effort put into the details. I'd been interested to know the specifics of what you couldn’t achieve with it?
ollybee··on Ask HN: What are your favourite self-hosted tools?
Grafana - The attention to detail is amazing. I've not even looked at similar hosted services, I find it hard to believe they are better.
ollybee··on “Bing is bigger than you think,” Microsoft boasts, at 33% of US searches
qwant.com another privacy focussed search engine augments results with Bing.
ollybee··on Google's stance on neo-Nazis 'dangerous', says EFF
"Dark web network Tor has said it has no plans to stop the Daily Stormer from using its technology." This straight after having talked about various other services having banned Daily Stormer. It implies Tor is a service controlled by the Tor project who could actually kick Daily Stormer if they wanted. While it could be accidental incompetence I worry this is a deliberate attempt to paint tor negatively in the public’s mind.

Check out the hackaday project page for more detail https://hackaday.io/project/11864-tritiled I should make clear this is not my project.

ollybee··on Ask HN: Any tools to easily cluster ideas/notes by similarity?
https://piggydb.net I dont use this myself but it's been on my list of things to investigate for a very long time as it seems like a fresh approch to note taking.
ollybee··on The .feedback scam
This seems a similar model to the .sucks TLD. They offered domains to company owners for $2500 before offering them to the public.
ollybee··on Hetzner Private Cloud
It's as in "tinpot", British slang meaning low value or little importance.

For many the detail of the hardware does not matter Eg. "Once the packet hits the tin it's no longer my problem". Also talking about a £50k pile of servers as just "tin that needs to be racked" could be a backhanded way of signalling confidence in the task, where others might be intimidated by the cost of the equipment they are dealing with.

ollybee··on Hetzner Private Cloud
Physical servers, with an implication that it's litrally just the hardware and no service level on top. Similar to when people talk about bare metal servers.
ollybee··on Hetzner Private Cloud
It's totally unsupported. If you were not able to just rent the tin and configure this yourself then you're probably not going to be able to maintain it long term. This product is dangerous and some people will learn that too late.
ollybee··on Nginx reaches 33.3% web server market share while Apache falls below 50%
cPanel has no native support for nginx, if you've seen that it's been using a third party plugin. The second most popluar server controlpanel Plesk supports the configuraion you describes bt it's not enabled by default so I doubt will be affected the statistics.
ollybee··on Ask HN: How do companies go about getting cultural fit with a candidate?
I love this approch from https://careers.bytemark.co.uk/process

"There's no "cultural fit" requirement. If you have a skill we like and you can learn and work with a team, you'll get on fine here. You'll be our company culture, and we welcome your contribution."

ollybee··on Everyone who can now see your entire internet history, including the taxman
Reading the legislation its not "Entire Internet history" as most people would understand it. It looks very much like they are asking for NetFlow data without saying that explicitly. They want a Time stamp, port, source and destination IP and amount of data transferred. This is terrifying, I think the “Internet history” narrative is being setup to be deliberately confusing.
ollybee··on Dissonant tones sound fine to people not raised on Western music
There was a dicsussion and interview with studys author (srongly named as Johsn in the arstechnica aticle) recently on BBC radio 4's Inside cience. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07jqr1y 15:10

ollybee··on WordPress is not easy
Wordpress is not easy for an amateur but that's missing the point. It has driven down the cost of website development. Cheap cookie cutter Wordpress sites by budget developers are good enough for very many people.
