ollifi··on Your own company? You can do it (2011)
I think that's how insurance works on a basic level, but when it is run as business you try to maximize the profit. Healthcare is one of the best businesses around because in the event your client gets very sick they are willing to pay pretty much everything to get better. You can design the insurance around these events and average customer does not really pay attention.

State run healthcare ruins the market by basing the cost of treatments to pretty much what they cost to perform rather than how much person is willing to pay for them. Of course it does not work quite so smoothly in the real world, but enough that countries with public healthcare seem to be cheaper.

ollifi··on Could We Run Modern Society on Human Power Alone?
Here is a guy who has experimented living 'energy positive' for many years[1]. Meaning he tries to get more energy out of farming that he puts into it. In his calculations it does not make sense even to use a horse. Seems pretty tough, I think hunting and gathering would be easier way to go if you had access to the land.

Good writeup, but unfortunately in finnish.

ollifi··on Live display of CO2 emitted to produce electricity in European countries
Not sure how good option nuclear is with the recent experience with Olkiluoto 3. Probably safe yes, but maybe too expensive?
ollifi··on Why the Film Industry Hasn't Been Disrupted Yet, Part 5
Blumhouse[1] is interesting. Lots of small productions with incredible ROIs and no ambitions to make bigger films.

ollifi··on Ask HN: What do you wish someone would build?
I'd like for someone to bring "social graph" in to center of computing. Now we have good tools for manipulating files/data but communication with others seems like an afterthought. Which it of course is because of historical reasons. To reach others I need to go through various platforms, which are self-contained with their own tools for text manipulation and image manipulation etc. Communication could be the starting point for new OS design.
ollifi··on MoMA Will Make Thousands of Exhibition Images Available Online
Also I hope people who go to museum would refrain from photographing and actually enjoy the art experience while there. MoMa especially was very bad in this regard and it was very difficult to look at anything and not be asked to move out of way. Some museums ban photography and I think it makes them much more enjoyable.
ollifi··on To tell someone they're wrong, first tell them how they're right
I find that most of this discussion is framed through being right and needing to school someone. That is pretty easy special case. The useful thing to learn in conversation would be to actually have power to adjust your own beliefs. It's better to be in that end of learning.
ollifi··on Ways to get motivated when you don’t feel like working
I have sometimes used a method where I start working in the morning and when I find myself losing focus I have a rule to stop and go home. It keeps me constantly underachieving and wasting time. After a while I actually just really want to get stuff done and the runs get longer. Obviously this does not work very well when working in teams or for someone else.
ollifi··on DeepArt.io introduces style transfer for videos
If it looks like what the client is looking for (a very big if), those are very cheap frames. If you hire someone to manually mangle 5 min of video it will usually end up costing way more than that.
ollifi··on Ask HN: How do you integrate remote developers?
Yes of course. I did it because my wife got job offer in a different city 6 hours drive away and I wanted to stay with her but still keep workin for my old company.
ollifi··on Ask HN: How do you integrate remote developers?
I understand what you mean. For me it was not a problem. If you are working in office people can count the hours you are sitting as well. I didn't view working remote different.

And you can still turn the stream off if you want to concentrate. I can't do that in open office.

If the monitor was turned off for some reason it immediatly turned into eavesdropping as people simply won't feel that you are there. So I think it was important that audio would only travel if person listening was being seen. That really helps the lizard brain to sense that someone is present.

ollifi··on Ask HN: How do you integrate remote developers?
Not good general advice maybe, but I had good success working remote with more like telepresence setup. I had small monitor in the corner of the office and people could walk up to it and speak to me. I could also overhear quite a bit of the chatter in the room. It was very important that people could see me on the screen.

Although I missed many of the perks of working remote I felt pretty connected socially. What I discussed with my colleagues they also found it ok.

As said this is not for everyone, but I look forward to technologies that enable people being in same place remotely.

ollifi··on Malware leads Minnesota school district to close for 1 day
Ok, I misunderstood snow days to mean generally snowy days. I am from north and we have snow many months of the year. I thought if snowy day causes school to shut down it must be in a place where it doesn't snow this often. If snow day means day when school is shut down due to extreme weather it makes sense there are those especially in places with bad wearher. I wish we would have had them here when I was in school.
ollifi··on Malware leads Minnesota school district to close for 1 day
> Then why are schools closed on snow days?

I would imagine not in Minnesota? I think this is measure to limit traffic in places where snow is rare occurance and causes a spike in accidents.

ollifi··on A bot has successfully appealed $3M worth of parking tickets in the UK
That's for speeding though. Parking is flat rate in Finland as well.
ollifi··on Against Generations (2015)
I've seen my classification go from Gen X to Gen Y and then to millenial over the years. I guess I should be happy to be considered one of the new kids, but I wish I would have grown up to be X like I was promised.
ollifi··on How Modern Video Players Work
Spotify has preloading offline mode in the mobile player. Maybe not exactly what you are looking for.
ollifi··on The NASA Rocket Countdown Came from a 1929 Fritz Lang Film
Yes it's a technical limitation which he would not have chosen today. I agree.

In the silent era they had to work around the missing technology and that affects acting style, story points, the pacing, lighting, set design etc. This created silent film. To reverse those creative decisions you need to redo lot more than color and sound.

Even today when you shoot b+w movies and probably use color camera you light it totally different. Just simply desaturating the image does not work.

ollifi··on The NASA Rocket Countdown Came from a 1929 Fritz Lang Film
These are artworks, and even though they are made with limited technology they are built to those constraints. You can't update the medium and not lose the essence of the piece.

You don't make super mario more appealing to modern audiences by rendering it from first person. We should build emulators so that people can play the original. Or you can draw inspiration from the original and make a new piece that works in modern ways.

So I think it would be waste of effort. Colorizing historical photos is cool, but I don't think it's the same thing.

ollifi··on Ask HN: What should we fund at YC Research?
If we cure aging and live for centuries we will still be subject to accidents while we are trying to work out how to live without a body at all. I would be interested to know how likely it is to get maimed or killed during this extended period and how it would affect the psychology of a person. I assume it would be a pretty frightened bunch not leaving home much.
ollifi··on Request For Research: Basic Income
Yes that's true. I meant making education more accesible in terms of making it free not making it less difficult. It becomes cheaper for people to give it a shot and more people end up graduating. It's true that this devalues the achievement and nobody really can hire you just because you graduated. On the other hand in a society where most of your peers have (devalued) university education you won't even get to job interview without one.
ollifi··on Request For Research: Basic Income
Coming from a place with free university education I don't think that is right. More accessible university education, more people get university education, this raises the bar in all fields.

HR still prefers somebody who went through the trouble of getting the paper as it signals putting the effort in.

Now many jobs that previosly didn't need university education have such applicants and it becomes more mandatory to get one in order to compete. And why would you not, it is free after all.

In the end more people get higher education. it won't necessary help you getting a better job but I think it is good for society anyway.

For many others this "useless over education" is one of the reasons to introduce fees to schools. To make vocational studies worth more again and force people to think education more like an investment.

ollifi··on Generation Uphill
> Should people be able to live at university forever, with a living wage from the public purse? What if they were enrolled but didn't ever attend?

One way to sort it is the finnish system where you have certain amount of months you can get paid for. Your courses are tracked and if you are enrolled but are not advancing fast enough you need to payback your benefits. If you advance to further studies you can get more months, but eventually you run out of them.

There is only so many places available to study and you need to take test to get into most places.

It's not without its problems and it certainly is not 'free'.

ollifi··on An End to Parking?
Is that a discount price? I think one month is over 50e.
ollifi··on How Will Consumers Use Faster Internet Speeds?
Or we could stream 2K with less compression. They show 2K in most cinemas and it looks pretty decent with low compression.
ollifi··on Wikipedia fails as an encyclopedia, to science’s detriment
Camera projections are very common technique in computer graphics and software often refer to this kind of terminology. When I try to get better understanding what they actually mean I often find wikipedia articles lacking. It's like looking up a traditional food and finding only receipe.
ollifi··on Show HN: Decentralised Twitter – Microblogging on the Ethereum Blockchain
I think it would be decent tradeoff to not be spammed and datamined (although datamining certainly is possible as it is an open system).

ollifi··on Finland Is Considering Testing Giving Every Citizen €800 per Month
This is a good topic to discuss, but terrible article. They are planning on running a test on some basic income schemes[1]. Finland is going through austerity measures and I don't think basic income fits in to current political landscape.

ollifi··on The Soap Opera Effect and how to make it go away
This explanation is wrong. The effect is very visible also in Europe where tv is 25 fps and no 3:2 pull down is performed to 24fps material.

The soap opera look came from the video camera which operated similar way as video playback. Although the systems run 25 or 30fps they show each frame in two interlaced fields. This meant screen was updated 50 or 60 times per second, but showing either the odd or even lines of the frame at once.

Video was recorded in similar fashion so each field was captured with half a frame offset in time to give it effective frame rate of 50 or 60fps even though this meant actual frames would look funny on noninterlaced displays.

Film was transferred to video by taking both fields from one frame or with 3:2 pull down in 60hz countries. This made the effective frame rate closer to 24 fps like it was intended to be shown in cinemas.
