ollifi··on Facebook and Instagram let users call for death to Russian soldiers over Ukraine
I feel it for Meta, this is a really hard problem. Why is it allowed only in certain neighbouring countries and not all? Why now? Why make exception in this conflict and not the others?

I think it is hard to accept that company in US makes these decisions for all vs local news papers or governments etc. like it used to be.

ollifi··on Ask HN: How do a prepare mentally for war?
War is not pandemic, but it’s recent life changing event we are all living through. I find it telling nobody even mentions it in this thread. There has been some scary moments, feeling that things are globally off the rails, lots of casualties, lost loved ones, major inconviniences to normal life, but overall we have adjusted. I think long term there will be lots of issues caused by pandemic, but day to day it’s hard to keep panicing about it.
ollifi··on Show HN: Switch windows of same app with hotkey (alt + `)
Does not work in all keyboard layouts though. One more reason to use US layout.
ollifi··on Wordle is pretty damn smart in many subtle ways
caulk was the word last week though? Nobody I play the game with knew that word. Granted we are not native english speakers. Too hard word every now and then is also unifying experience when everybody stops hating the player and instead hates the game.
ollifi··on Ask HN: Should we own the free stuff we pay for?
Probably nothing? They (or we I guess) have phone numbers and addresses as well.
ollifi··on A database of broken things to identify common failure modes and how to fix them
I fix some stuff even if it’s more expensive than buying new one. It’s nice to keep old things going, not to produce waste and often times the new thing is cheap because it’s not ’made the way they used to make them’
ollifi··on Approved Cameras
Also compression. ARRI 2.5k cameras made decent images as they were lot less compressed as some 4K cameras at the time.

Netflix streams 4K but often doesn’t look so great over internet compared to any cinema in my area which projects only 2K on a huge screen but from bigger files.

ollifi··on All the giant companies used ffmpeg (2020)
Yes I am using videotoolbox. I need to clarify that ffmpeg is not slow (it runs close to realtime bit under 20 fps) problem is that other tools reach 72 frames per second.
ollifi··on All the giant companies used ffmpeg (2020)
Yes it does. I am using hw acceleration. This is using mac hardware so not all options are available, but the ones I have tried do not make significant difference.
ollifi··on All the giant companies used ffmpeg (2020)
I’m using ffmpeg to transcode files. My users give feedback that it is really slow. At first I thought they are wrong as I believed ffmpeg is as fast as it gets, but sure enough after testing transcoding (prores -> h264) is many times slower than using resolve, silverstack, compressor etc. I get asked all the time can’t we just swap to using something else, but this ffmpeg monoculture means there seems to be no alternative.
ollifi··on When is the revolution in architecture coming?
So the theory is that the entire profession of architects is against constructing buildings people actually want? Or that times have changed and we lack the environment and infrastructure to achieve what we once could do.
ollifi··on When is the revolution in architecture coming?
I find it amazing that most commenters find nothing good in contemporary architecture but at the same time seem to believe that if only somebody did the right thing things would be better. I think it is pretty obvious that there are hard constraints at play here. If it would be possible to do different kind of new buildings, somebody in the world surely would be doing them. It’s really hard to find anyone who doesn’t love great historical buildings I don’t think this is a case of wrong people designing structures.
ollifi··on Single sign-on: What we learned during our identity alpha
Yes it probably is only the beginning. The finnish health digitalization project Apotti which currently covers only 10 municipalities or so is already said to have cost over 700 million euros. On here we always point to baltic countries and say look what they can achieve with only few tens of millions.
ollifi··on 'Cottagecore' and the rise of the modern rural fantasy
I think trying to get average urban/rural numbers is interesting but also misleading. What matters is what is actually happening and where the harm is produced.

My city is heated with district heating, which comes from coal. Thats big chunk of my personal carbon footprint and makes living in a city look bad vs rural life.

I think focusing on consumers and making this about urban/rural lifestyle choices is only half the equation and to change things you need to go in and swap the power plants, farms etc.

ollifi··on 'Cottagecore' and the rise of the modern rural fantasy
Why is that ridiculous? If you set up a farm that releases GHG surely you are the producer of it.

Oil industry spinned us to calculate personal carbon foot prints [1]. That’s a good tool, but at the same time it dissolves the responsibility. In one hand the people actually producing the harm get to blame consumer demand and consumer can aknowledge that what ever they do makes no difference in the big picture.

If you go to work somewhere and release lots of gasses heating the planet you should probably think long and hard why you are doing that.

ollifi··on I won over $55M in the lottery, but didn’t tell my friends or family
In Finland tax records are public and papers make articles and search engines so anyone can look up how rich any person is (as long as they make more than 150k or so)

People complain and there has been talk and steps forward about changing the system but in the end I don’t think that much harm comes from it.

Ironically lottery winnings are tax free so they are the only people with stealth wealth.

ollifi··on A shot to prevent Lyme disease could be on its way
Isn’t Hysteria the other way round than those other diagnoses on the list? It used to be diagnosed but since doctors don’t believe in it anymore.
ollifi··on Nokia 9000 Communicator was launched 25 years ago
Sure there are decent smart phones that only costs 100 euros, but I was referring to the fact that in 1996 communicator was deemed too expensive for consumer market, but now top of the line iphones sell huge volumes.
ollifi··on Nokia 9000 Communicator was launched 25 years ago
I find it interesting that phones never got cheaper but now they are more useful so large number of people actually consider 1000$ to be ok price to pay for one.
ollifi··on Wealth Shown to Scale
Why 50%? Assuming we are talking about Bezos and AMZN the max tax would be 20% for long term capital gains?
ollifi··on No More Movies
There was an interview with the scriptwriter (can’t find it though) who said they wanted to make a film about nazi germany and the young people who bought into the cause. If you look at the costumes I think it is not so far fetched that was one aspect of it.

ollifi··on How college became a ruthless competition divorced from learning
True. Landslide is a wrong word here. I meant It had similar Nobody saw it coming -narrative attached to it. Also hard to compare vote result percentages between multiparty and two options votes.

> Countries with more equal societies, like the Nordics, and Canada, do not have strong populist movements like those in the US and the UK.

Maybe besides the point, but nordic countries do have significant populist movements. In Finland (which I know best) populist Finns Party[1] is the largest party according to polls at the moment. We had our trump/brexit moment in 2011 when they took landslide victory against what the experts and ”elites” expected.

ollifi··on Ten years of OP-1
I like high profit margins. It makes possible (but doesn’t guarantee) better design, better working conditions, smaller volumes, healthy second hand market etc. I love OP-1 but in the end it’s going to be waste. We are in huge trouble optimizing for ever cheaper everything on this planet. If we would be talking about healthcare, food, housing, education I would be more on consumers side, but teenage engineering makes toys for people who have maslows lower levels covered.

/r/wsb is kind of insanity, but I’ve come to think that maybe young person can YOLO a bit against the odds somewhere in life. If something returns poorly on average, but has high payouts at the top it might just work out. Your life won’t be the average case but single sample.

Lottery is too improbable but some other things ”no rational person would do” can be ok. Main thing is to get over with it soon and protect the downside.

Of course if you get lucky you need to be contempt with the nice head start and switch strategy to doing the boring rational things. Not sure if these qualities are often found in one person.

Can you elaborate on this? If you have multiple frames where the target has moved around and you line up the images couldn’t we get single image with more information?

I have no proof but I always assumed they do this to push phone users towards downloading the app.
