oliyoung··on OpenAI hacked Australian Medicare portal
Saying "Medicare Portal" buries the lede a little here.

Medicare is part of "Services Australia", the larger social services government agency that looks after unemployment, support payments and public health. We access all of that through the one portal

Accessing "non-public" data through that is endictment on their infra security more than it is OpenAI

oliyoung··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
Medicare is the first scare campaign bought up in any Australian election
oliyoung··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
It's crazy that universal health is the political third rail in most modern countries but for the opposite reasons

In most of the world it's the policy that cannot be touched, just in Europe, Canada and Australia its _existance_ is invoilable, in the US the _introduction_ seems to be the unwinnable war

oliyoung··on Ask HN: What changed in your life when you started meditating (and how)?
> minimize the wandering of your mind

To paraphrase the wonderful Thich Nhat Hanh, include that in your meditation. None of us, even the most skilled mediators can get to the kind of clarity and simplicity that people expect from meditation.

It's not about emptying your mind, that's impossible, it's about learning to be fully present in the moment. Anchor in your breath, in your senses, in the right now and think "Breathing in, I know my mind is wandering"

I like to imagine it as a clear afternoon day. Some thoughts, some clouds will appear, but my presence is the sky behind them.

oliyoung··on 'The Odyssey' Proves It: Audiences Want Movies Made the Hard Way
Exactly, Nolan's use of CGI is perfect. Elegant and purposeful, and incredibly well executed.

oliyoung··on John C. Dvorak has died
First Om, now Dvorak.

Such a loss, the prototypical cranky geek. Loved his takes with Curry and Leporte

oliyoung··on Kimi K3, Qwen 3.8, and Anthropic's (Potential) Unravelling
The "640k should be enough for anyone" quote (even if Gates didn't exactly say it) is making the point is that _right now_ we have no idea about what our future needs and capabilities will be, we can't imagine what "should be enough" will be

640k was enough ... in 1981 ... almost fifty years later is 50,000 lower than a standard off the shelf PC now

oliyoung··on Australian energy retailers must offer three hours of free daytime electricity
that's inconsequential to keeping my family cool on the third 43c degree day in a week
oliyoung··on Microsoft deleted my account and OneDrive
Man, I love the PlayStation is going purely digital, who needs physical media for the games or movies you buy, nothing like this ever happens
oliyoung··on Australian energy retailers must offer three hours of free daytime electricity
As an Australian, the lack of anxiety and guilt you get when you're using 10-12 hours of air conditioning in the middle of summer and not paying for a cent of it because your solar panels are covering is worth more than anything
oliyoung··on Immich 3.0
Immich is such a no-brainer replacement for Apple Photos or Google Photos, combined with VPN like Tailscale, it's almost a drop in replacement
oliyoung··on Physical disc production ending in Jan 2028 for new games on PlayStation
> Microsoft go the same route

There's a reason Game Pass and the Series S exist, they just hadn't had the courage to say the quiet part loud yet.

oliyoung··on Physical disc production ending in Jan 2028 for new games on PlayStation
PlayStation saw Microsoft's recent news and decided to take out the trash this week.

The entire console gaming industry has been decimated in the last few weeks.
