olivierestsage··on Uploading Pirated Books via BitTorrent Qualifies as Fair Use, Meta Argues
Another person who I remember really coming out as a villain in that era was Gene Simmons from KISS: "Sue everybody. Take their homes, their cars."[1]

olivierestsage··on Plasma Bigscreen – 10-foot interface for KDE plasma
Big things from KDE lately. If you haven't tried it since the pre-Plasma days, I really recommend giving it a go. Fabulous as a general DE.
olivierestsage··on Hacking Super Mario 64 using covering spaces
No. (You?)

One of the things that was so magical about this game is that you never knew what the real limits were. Some things were just childhood fantasies, like getting beyond the waterfall, but other things like this actually were possible in retrospect.

olivierestsage··on Where things stand with the Department of War
Well, I’m in the US and have been following politics closely for the entire time window you mention, and this year marks the first time I’ve heard it. It is very jarring and a notable rhetorical shift from the concept of “service”.
olivierestsage··on Yet Another Fix Coming for Older AMD GPUs on Linux – Thanks to Valve Developer
Same feeling here. What Valve has done honestly leaves me in awe. The Steam Deck is the best device I’ve ever owned, and probably the only one I unreservedly love.
olivierestsage··on EDuke32 – Duke Nukem 3D (Open-Source)
Agreed about Duke3D movement being superior to Quake's. Not Doom (at least not for me personally), but I agree about Quake, which feels "artificial" -- no momentum.
olivierestsage··on EDuke32 – Duke Nukem 3D (Open-Source)
Duke3D is one of those weird games where I don't respect it as much as Doom or Quake, but I have to admit I've had a lot of fun playing it at different points in my life. Some seriously great memories deathmatching with friends on the opening map, and the combat in the single player is often really good.
olivierestsage··on 'A Big Fuck You to Big Tech': New Jersey Residents Defeat AI Data Center
Been amazing to see how far tech companies have fallen in public esteem (good). I remember when my friends and I would get together to watch the new MacBook announcements, eager to see what was coming. Feels as distant now as sk8erboi culture.
olivierestsage··on Skip the Tips: A game to select "No Tip" but dark patterns try to stop you
The time limit accurately simulates the experience of being under the accusatory stare of the person who handed you the machine
olivierestsage··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
This is definitely not the case, and I invite anyone reading this comment to install a Linux distribution themselves in a VM or something to find out via direct experience. Fedora is a good place to start in my opinion.
olivierestsage··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
I wouldn't know what to recommend for "just works" photo syncing from the phone à la iCloud.
olivierestsage··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
I used macOS as my daily driver from Tiger to last year, actually. I don’t know what the inconsistencies you’re referring to are, but I certainly prefer them to cloud account nagging and constant attempts to monetize user behavior, which is the modern macOS experience.
olivierestsage··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
Gnome has improved significantly since the difficult Gnome 3 launch, and KDE Plasma was a massive upgrade that keeps getting better all the time.
olivierestsage··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
It really has gotten to the point where Linux offers the best option for a sane desktop experience. Watching Windows and macOS implode while KDE and Gnome slowly get better and better has really been something. Not quite at the point I'd recommend them for grandma and grandpa, but not that far off, either.
olivierestsage··on Warcraft III Peon Voice Notifications for Claude Code
I missed out on Warcraft III the first time around. What's the best way to play the original game today?
olivierestsage··on macOS No Longer Ships with Emacs
As an Emacs user, my reaction to this is positive. The version that shipped with macOS was so out of date that it just tended to confuse potential new users
olivierestsage··on Claude is a space to think
Usage metrics don't reveal preference in all cases. The fact these companies are sketchy/untrustworthy is practically a meme, including among non-tech people. Their services are widely relied upon, but they enjoy very little subjective good will
olivierestsage··on Nintendo DS code editor and scriptable game engine
Steam Deck is the device of my wildest childhood/teenage dreams. A fully functional portable Linux computer that also plays PC games, are you kidding me?! But I do get how it's not really in the same category of old school handhelds. I don't take it around much except within the house.
olivierestsage··on Please don't say mean things about the AI I just invested a billion dollars in
Powerful catharsis in this
olivierestsage··on Snow Simulation Toy
Seeing this really makes it hit home how rarely you find this sort of joy in tech anymore. This reminds me of when computers still seemed fun and I wanted to learn more about them
olivierestsage··on Wine-Staging 11.1 Adds Patches for Enabling Recent Photoshop Versions on Linux
I think there are two reasons this hasn't happened: (1) Wine might be useful to Microsoft at some point for providing backward compatibility in Windows itself; (2) it would be an extremely bad look/PR disaster to go after this project after spending so much time and money positioning yourself as an open source supporter
olivierestsage··on I'm 34. Here's 34 things I wish I knew at 21
I definitely interpreted this one as meaning emotional harm.
olivierestsage··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
The main way I discover new music on Bandcamp is by browsing the collections of people who also own albums I love to check what else they bought.
olivierestsage··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
Yes, and I would be curious to discover which human artists' works were plagiarized to produce the result I liked in the AI song.
olivierestsage··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
Funny to see this right now. Spotify's promotion of AI music bothered me so much that it has actually pushed me to Bandcamp and the practice of buying music again. It's really fun to build a collection knowing you're supporting the artists, download FLAC files, organize your little "collection" page ... Feels like a renaissance in my relationship with music, the most fun I've had since what.cd. Anyway, love this stance they're taking.
olivierestsage··on Tux Paint
This and GCompris are worth a look for any parent!
olivierestsage··on Spherical Snake
Extremely fun and satisfying, nice job
olivierestsage··on Windows 11 surges among PC gamers on Steam as Linux stalls
It brings a nostalgic tear to my eye to see the OS flame wars heating up like it's 2002 again. Time to re-download some of those 1024x768 3D render wallpapers of Tux smashing a Windows computer

olivierestsage··on Americans Hate AI. Which Party Will Benefit
Not an original sentiment, but an honest one: AI has killed the fun of technology for me. From early childhood onward, technology enthusiasm has been one of the defining aspects of my personality, affecting everything -- profession choice, hobbies, etc. Now, for the first time, that's changing.

(The economic side of this is also turning me into an unwilling Marxist, which I think speaks to the point being made in this article. Whoever tapes into this feeling will win big.)

olivierestsage··on Brigitte Bardot, French screen legend, dies aged 91
Legend. If you haven't seen her collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg, "Bonnie and Clyde," it's worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa7wjr1NwhA
