olivermarks··on Arizona limits building as groundwater dries up
I live in California, which has infrastructure built for 20m people and a current population of 40m and rising.

'Climate change' is not the issue, unrealistic population infrastructure capacity is. In California the ecology is that we have regular cycles of heavy rain every 5-7 years. The reservoir systems were originally built to store water for the dry years.

Forestry management took into account tree disease and the fact forest floors have self cleansed with fire for millennia.

Today we appear to have forgotten all this and are instead astonished and horrified if it rains/ doesn't rain and when there are fires during fire season.

Arizona is in a far more serious situation with inadequate infrastructure capacity to sustain massive population increases, but currently the mania for housing anyone who wants to live in the west outstrips common sense.

Obviously good ecological stewardship of our planet is a no brainer but it seems as though a lot of people just can't join up the historical dots on this and feel human migration to the more pleasant geographical and climate areas are a human right independent of 'tragedy of the commons' logic.

Diesel engines have electric preheaters. Electric battery warmers have to use battery power...
olivermarks··on Heavy electric trucks cheaper than diesel goods trucks
@jeffbee My diesel truck is mostly parked this year in California due to high fuel costs.

People who need to drive 100's of miles daily in diesel vehicles are having to pass on their increased energy costs to the customers ...which then equals fewer customers.

I cited California because it 'leads the way' in idiotic legislation by out of touch bureaucrats and to some degree influences European environmentalists who are eager to leverage the conceptual idea this is going well. i do know a long distance trucker in Sweden who regularly drives Skorna>Stockholm. I'd be interested to know battery performance on an EV Heavy truck in winter there, at least it's relatively flat.

Gasoline and diesel in California was around $3 3 years ago which has a huge supply chain impact on the overall economy. your suggestion that heavy vehicles going through a lot of tires is 'a bunch of nonsense' demonstrates a lack of real world experiences. Truck tire pollution is a very real problem and heavier EV battery powered vehicles are exacerbating this problem, particularly due to the different torque characteristics of EVs which are similar to diesel engines.

olivermarks··on Heavy electric trucks cheaper than diesel goods trucks
Fantasy theories that ignore many of the core transportation facts, which include

very volatile costs of fuel (diesel is nosebleed higher than gasoline in California this year, a disaster for businesses and tradesmen)

Effective, efficient, fast refueling networks

Complexity of fleet equipment, speed to repair

Tires - an 18 wheeler gets through a lot of tires in its lifetime in service. EVs are very heavy unloaded

Fleet trucking is a brutal business where every penny counts and owner/operators are whipsawed by fuel prices, demand waxing a waining and endless politicla meddling.

Once we have nuclear, a credible supply grid and have overcome the battery capacity and fire issues EV will be viable to businesses. Until then it is the unrealistic slow motion disaster being forced through in California.

We have huge political problems, with forestry management failures and lying about controlled burns and fire break creations.

https://www.capradio.org/articles/2021/06/23/newsom-misled-t....

By fueling 'climate change' anxieties the California supermajority and the monopoly power company PG&E mask their deadly incompetence with massive media spends, stoking fear and with the inevitable result of insurance being withdrawn and businesses leaving the state.

It's a shame there's no credible political opposition in the state, the infrastructure is crumbling, street dwelling drug tourist visitors are out of control, we are not on top of water storage during the heavy rain cycle years that occur every 5-7 years.

olivermarks··on Meteorologists face unprecedented harassment from conspiracy theorists
My comments are about the sad state of credible information sources, not the actual topic being discussed. No need to apologize, it's easy to go down the paranoia rabbit hole and label anyone who questions your rigid beliefs.
olivermarks··on Meteorologists face unprecedented harassment from conspiracy theorists
Sadly Wikipedia has now lost all credibility, and is not a credible resource for anything even vaguely controversial.

Many people think 'global warming' (or 'climate change' as it now called) is 80% snake oil and that there are many alarmist evangelizing grifters making a fortune and changing the global balance of power in its name.

This is another failed example of 'trust me I'm a scientist' that has lost a large segment of our population.

Honesty and transparency would solve most of this, not just insulting people and accusing them of believing in heretic theories that have been cooked up by a secret cabal of 'non existent' conspirators. Yuo don't win hearts and minds that way.

Another 2020 CNN article: 'China to expand weather modification program to cover area larger than India'

https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/03/asia/china-weather-modificati...

It's not hard to understand why people are anxious about global 'weather modification' and annoyed when they are insulted and dismissed as cranks.

This is another of those obscure areas of operations that need a lot more transparency, explanation and openness so we don't freak people out. 5G and chemtrails appear to be two areas that make people extremely anxious, whether legitimately or not.

olivermarks··on Meteorologists face unprecedented harassment from conspiracy theorists
Here's video of a typical smaller cloud seeding aircraft.

https://youtu.be/nwonVY_cNS4

CNN isn't helping anyone by talking about 'conspiracy theories' and claiming

'.... In Spain’s case, much of the 'trolling' revolves around the rehashing of an old conspiracy theory: so-called “chemtrails.”

'Under many of the agency’s Twitter posts, especially those that refer to more extreme weather, users have posted images of blue skies, crisscrossed with wispy, white trails. They falsely claim the trails contain a cocktail of chemicals to artificially manipulate the weather – keeping rain away and causing climate change.

It’s a theory roundly rejected by scientists'.

One of the reasons CNN is a failed, irresponsible media company '(when it launched as a lightweight cable version of the vapid USA Today tabloid and was nicknamed 'chicken noodle news') is this type of dismissive, sloppy article that dismisses people's concerns.

Anytime I see the phrase 'conpiracy theory' I usually just skim and move on.

olivermarks··on Steal This Idea: The Larger the Car, the More You Pay to Park
Penalizes families - say you have 3 kids, a dog and grand parents to move around you will need a larger vehicle. So many of these schemes to punish car ownership and use are invented by cyclists and people who don't need a car and don't think anyone else should have one either.

Also penalizes tradesmen who have trucks and vans.

olivermarks··on Rising number of lithium battery incidents on airplanes worry crew
We've come full circle as a society. Pressurized steam used to power everything, created by burning coal and wood. Then we went to oil based fuels for transportation and grid electricity and natural gas for most other energy needs. Now we are back to pressurized battery electricity created by coal, gas, hydro.

Thermal runaway issues will increase as more lithium devices malfunction and age, as the endless electric scooter and other battery fires demonstrate.

It's crazy out there right now - massive political pressure with tax breaks, climate anxiety marketing for EVs, mass confusion about energy supply chains and pollution whether oil or electric, a lack of clarity about battery ingredients and lifecycles from extraction to disposal.

I bpught the Say She She vinyl off the band when they were in town (signed!). I have a turntable but the vinyl included a download album mp3s link, so I've never played the vinyl. Pretty common I suspect.

I have quite a lot of rare vinyl and a good turntable but it's a pain constantly getting up to change records unless you're in the mood.

I drink ridiculous amounts of English Breakfast tea with 1% milk every day. The water HAS to be boiling when it hits the tea. You cn really tell the difference if the water is less than boiling. Same but more subtle with green tea imo

olivermarks··on SUVs more dangerous to cyclists than other cars, study suggests
IHSS insurance institute for highway safety are a credible organization but I agree it is a surprisingly small sample size and analysis. Urban, suburban and rural cycling also have very different risk factors.

Regarding vehicle size, driver visibility of surroundings is more critical. I'm not a fan of huge SUVS but I don't have 4 kids and 2 dogs. Being hit by a commercial vehicle on a 2 wheeled vehicle is going to be bad, but I'd argue generally commercial drivers pay more attention to their surroundings than the typical soccer mom, far better training and regulations.

I also feel distractions play a large part in many collisions - the replacement of analog tactile knobs and dials in cars with giant flat screens is a major safety setback - and of course smartphones are a disaster for distracted driving.

I categorize 'the left' as either anarchist/progressives with no practical experience in running anything, the petit bourgeois woke leftist trend fashionistas but with lamentably few actual working class (in some case historically as there are few jobs) moderate left representation. The same issues are also a crisis in the UK (I'm a UK citizen) - ultra wealthy globalist leadership, straw man opposition, angry, frustrated electorate who feel no one is representing them.
olivermarks··on Protesters storm BlackRock’s Paris office
My take was that Macron was seen as a very unpopular globalist selling out the French people, do you feel this is accurate @srge? As is the case in many places, particularly the USA (where I currently am) the whole left/right party team sports system is often cited by the media to describe the factions and positions of groups of people. I feel this is breaking down, and that we have various anarchists on both the left and right attempting to destroy a system that isn't serving them. This distorts the perception of more moderate voters and positions. I'm highly aware of how tenacious the Gillet Jeunes were prior to the pandemic.

olivermarks··on Remembering Bob Lee
My comment wasn't directed at @benburton, I was just pointing out amongst all the warm memories of a very decent human being that San Francisco is becoming increasingly lawless.

I was badly beaten and robbed 12 years ago in the early hours by an unknown assailant downtown. It is exponentially worse today and something needs to happen and fast to get this under control so more people don't die or are badly injured and to stem the flow of talent leaving the area.

olivermarks··on Remembering Bob Lee
Most murders are for a reason, not 'senseless'.

THIS NEEDS TO STOP.

'Surveillance footage reviewed by The Standard appears to show Bob Lee, a 43-year-old former top executive at Square, walking on the sidewalk up Main Street away from the Bay Bridge at around 2:30 a.m., holding his side with one hand and using his phone with the other.

Lee then crosses the intersection at Harrison Street toward a parked white Camry with its lights flashing, the video appears to show. Lee lifts his shirt—as if to show the driver his wound and ask for help—and then falls to the ground after the car drives away.

He then gets up and walks back down Main Street toward the Bay Bridge before falling to the ground in front of 403 Main St., an apartment building known as the Portside'.

Very distressing.
