oliveoil··on Save My Life: an update
On the other hand, the story is not upvoted to the top of HN for no reason.
oliveoil··on Iphone 4.0 official video
Non-quicktime video URL, anyone? heh, perhaps one in flash?
oliveoil··on Man builds his own carbon-fibre, Windows based tablet PC
Yes, so:

1) that's something to put on your cv & bring with when applying for a job. it tells you something about the guy as an engineer.

2) if he was a founder this shows he can deliver and compete. you want to invest in people who can deliver and compete. those tablets are kind of big deal now you know.

oliveoil··on Facebook Privacy Scanner is launched
The tool's great! Let's hope you have not collected all my data when I ran it.

I also checked out this link on your homepage: http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/109538/7-things...

It says leaving your full birth date is not recommended (identity theft). So I went to the info page and clicked "edit information" but instead of having edit boxes on the Info page facebook recommends me to convert are my movies, music, colleges itc. into a pages (so they can track it better.. or make it more unified?). It's very hard to navigate away from that page (for a normal user anyway) and when you select nothing and click save they threaten you there's going to be none of the information in those sections on your profile (wow! now I'm scared!). Seriously --- it's becoming worse and worse, how can they be so disrespectful to their users, how can they not fear losing them??

oliveoil··on Charlie Munger on Greece, idiot bankers, accountants and more...
earlier post about Munger this week on HN: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1331591
oliveoil··on Charles Munger (of Berkshire Hathaway): Elementary Worldly Wisdom
oh, this is brilliant:

Yet, the net amount of money that's been made by the shareholders of airlines since Kitty Hawk, is now a negative figure—a substantial negative figure. Competition was so intense that, once it was unleashed by deregulation, it ravaged shareholder wealth in the airline business.

And that was 1994.

oliveoil··on Charles Munger (of Berkshire Hathaway): Elementary Worldly Wisdom
You start with wikipedia, e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permutation

The question is how exactly are guys like Munger and Buffet using this to choose stock. I'm missing some obvious link apparently.

oliveoil··on Netbooks are still a great deal
(on typography) I find the little hash signs (#) at the paragprahs' ends to be disturbing when reading: I always think for a split second I missed a starting quotation mark somewhere.
oliveoil··on What if you had bought Apple stock instead of that iPod?
Yes! Why we haven't done this yet?
oliveoil··on Gmail: Drag and drop attachments onto messages
I like how the screenshots show a typical webbrowsing session: your main browser hidden, only the gmail message compose window visible and neatly sized-down so there's space for the folder window on the left.
oliveoil··on [dead]
Is it just me or how come the cat doesn't scratch it?
oliveoil··on Why I Never Let Employees Negotiate a Raise
Say what you want about the article, but there's one really nice thing about his system: because there's a formula instead of negotiation, the good hackers who are often poor negotiators don't have to worry they have lower salary than the average or poor programmers who just happen to have better people skills or however you call it.
oliveoil··on Google Hiring Committee Stories
So the really smart people find a job in the meantime, the not as smart are DOA for the interviewers/committees. I've always suspected the majority of engineers actually got in together with a business Google had acquired rather than being hired directly. At least it looks much easier.
oliveoil··on Offer to game programmers from a Blender 3D developer
I was always thinking that the best recruitment grounds for open source game content are design/architecture/animation/mechanical engineering college and uni courses. The students can do their assignments plus have some fun playing with their own models in an open source game.

Why is that not happening??

oliveoil··on [dead]
wow. I sure hope he was able to put it all back together because the page doesn't seem to have any ads on it to pay for a new iPad.
oliveoil··on Why writing software is not like engineering
Terence Parr (the author) is "the maniac behind ANTLR": http://www.antlr.org/
oliveoil··on [dead]
Indeed. I wonder why Richard Dawkins is doing this. He can't possibly think in his brilliant mind that he can convince her.
oliveoil··on The Black Damsel In Dating Distress: A Response to OkCupid's Conclusions
Please start throwing rocks at me, but I can also see a much simpler explanation behind the numbers than those constructed in the post.

Just don't throw rocks at OkCupid, it's their job to analyze the numbers and match all those people in the best way they can. It's a nice bonus for everyone who is still on the dating scene (or in the dating website business) that OkCupid actually publishes what they find.

oliveoil··on How do you regulate Wu?
I certainly didn't mean it that way. What I'd like to know is whether one is overall better off with the analytical/western medicine or the complex-view approach of the eastern.
oliveoil··on How do you regulate Wu?
Out of curiosity: how many of you guys here consider the traditional Chinese medicine valid? (by valid I mean "possibly having positive healing outcomes beyond the placebo effect")
oliveoil··on The night I Met Einstein
I don't believe it either. Readers digest oozes out of its every sentence.
oliveoil··on Stuff
That's right, he does not. But you can live in a smaller apartment or live in an apartment of the same size with more empty space which arguably is better if you ever plan to do anything creative there. Or just spend better quality time relaxing. In other words, I claim that having a room with lots of empty space in it is a value in itself. And save money on the original purchase still.
oliveoil··on Stuff
I often think about this. And of one more hidden cost of stuff, especially furniture: it occupies space in a place you pay rent for for. If that sofa takes 2 square meters out of my 40 square meters apartment, that means every 20th rent I pay is just because of this. If my rent is approximately the same as the price of that sofa was, I refinance if every 1.6 years.
oliveoil··on Why my books are no longer for sale via Amazon
Always makes me smile when people apologize for using Microsoft when they (in theory at least) could have used someone else. (this is general, nothing personal intended ximeng)
oliveoil··on The Men Who Live Forever
I think this was the original barefoot post on hacker news:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1170253/The-...

oliveoil··on I Have No Talent
Then your talent is the ability to work hard.
oliveoil··on [dead]
It distracted me enough to go check HN, just out of curiosity how others like it -- so it's at least 30 seconds or so.

I personally don't like it because the apple falls over the search bar when I type there.

oliveoil··on Maven builds are an infinite cycle of despair
.. and the maven logo also looks horrible.
oliveoil··on My latest flash game, Robokill 2
I love it. Also whenever I see the word 'leviathan' it makes me wanna go install and play ufo: enemy unknown all over for some reason.
oliveoil··on Google's Chrome OS is a Commitment Mechanism
The most useful piece of information in this article, to me, was the concept of 'commitment mechanism'.
