oldnetguy··on Steve Jobs' 8th Grade Science Project Sells for $34,375
Honestly the cult of Jobs is a bit much. I appreciate his contribution to computing, but this is too much.
oldnetguy··on Parametron: 50s Japanese computer that uses neither transistors nor vacuum tubes
EAC-1101 In March 1958, NEC finished its first digital computer, the NEAC-1101. This machine used parametrons, invented by Eiichi Goto in 1954, and was perfected by using a single-turn transformer coupling system independently devised by NEC. This computer was designed for scientific and engineering calculations, and was Japan's first computer to use floating point operations. It was capable of decimal 7-digit floating point operations. It used 3,600 parametrons, 29 types of instructions, and had average performance of 3.5ms for addition/subtraction and 8.0ms for multiplication/division. The memory employed ferrite cores (magnetic core matrix system using the 2 ACs with different frequency), and memory capacity was 256 words (32-digit configuration). The NEAC-1101 was enhanced via improvements like expanding the memory capacity to 512 words, and was used for about 8 years for scientific and engineering calculations at NEC's research laboratory. The results from developing this computer contributed greatly to the development of subsequent parametron computers at NEC.

oldnetguy··on Your GPS Is Lying to You
There were many in the Coast Guard arguing to keep LORAN running. This was one of the reasons.
oldnetguy··on The day Steve Jobs dissed me in a keynote (2010)
Steve Job was a dick and Apple is a horrible company, say it ain't so.

Apple from Jobs to Cook screwed over many. At least Jobs didn't train the Chinese to undercut US manufacturing.

oldnetguy··on Journalism is rearranging the deckchairs. It needs to reinvent itself
"NEWS" outlets are competing against social media and are doing things to get your attention.

Some "NEWS" outlets are leaning towards activism and the others are leaning towards entertainment. NEWS companies are now either Media or Technology companies. And journalism has taken a backseat to doing things to get attention

oldnetguy··on Web Browsers on Video Game Consoles
If they brought up CDI and Pippin, then why leave out Commodore CDTV and CD32?
oldnetguy··on Nvidia is proposing a beast of a CPU system for Windows PCs
SGI had unified memory back in 1996.
oldnetguy··on Let's celebrate work that is 100% human-made
As a person who likes hand made items I'm for this. I will pay a premium for someone who hand makes an item. Bonus if it's someone older who provides old school craftsmanship.
oldnetguy··on AI grifters are creating fake Black people to sell Shein junk
I really want to make a joke about representation, but more to the point.

Having different ethnic people targets different demographics. We hear about people from various groups wanting this and now someone is doing it.

They seem to be getting traction by doing this. If it works for them others will follow.

oldnetguy··on US employers spend more than $1.5B a year to fight labor unions, report finds
My wife is in a Union and she has been getting info that has nothing to do with her job. Some unions cross pollinate with whatever cause someone in the union is interested in. She wants a raise but can't because of collective bargaining, but the union isn't doing anything about that. However they are talking about other political issues. So her dues are not helping her but whatever political issue is being promoted.

oldnetguy··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
Not to the same scale but yes. At least there are Teslas still made here.

With Apple it's the scale of what was done.

oldnetguy··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
His legacy is he used Apple to help build China into a technological powerhouse at the expense of American workers.

oldnetguy··on NYC families need over $125k in income to live in any borough
I know people making less than that but they are getting subsidies. It's people who are not poor enough for subsidies and not affluent that is getting squeezed

oldnetguy··on Super Micro Computer Investors Look for Exits
I would think HP or Dell could buy this but given what they did it would require to much. The company should die and the employees that contributed to this should be in jail..
oldnetguy··on Mozilla and Mila announce strategic research partnership
I really with they would concentrate on just making a better browser. I would subscribe to that.
oldnetguy··on Iran war energy crisis is a renewable energy wake-up call
I would argue a nuclear one as well. Energy independence and abundance should rely on a number of sources of energy.
oldnetguy··on The Reason Windows Hate Is Exploding: It's the End of Personal Computing [video]
Which version because I have been using it and it "functions" but it's not a joy.

oldnetguy··on Closure of the Weatheradio service in Canada
If this is a money issue can someone else take over? I mean can they raise money for it. I'm not Canadaian but I'll donate.
oldnetguy··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
I know a lot of Americans who remember 1979 and don't care if they are ever friends again. I agree, I also don't think this is a coherent national security strategy.
oldnetguy··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
I see this as Trump going after governments that were close to Russia and China. Which is why he is going after Iran, Venezuela and Cuba.

Also there are many countries in the middle east that we are friends with which would be happy if Iran falls.

oldnetguy··on Maybe America Needs Some New Cities
No that would make too much sense.

The US has so many cities, the politicians keep failing them.

oldnetguy··on Former Tumblr Head Jeff D'Onofrio Steps in as Acting CEO at the Washington Post
The person who ran Tumblr runs WaPo. What could go wrong?
oldnetguy··on Ask HN: Is the CoCo 3 the best 8 bit computer ever made?
You made the claim, what is your case?

I personally think the Commodore 64 as it was best price to performance you could buy. There is a reason why they call it the VW Beetle of Computers. Heck they are making new ones.

oldnetguy··on City of Dearborn unveils Drone as First Responder program for police
I expect to see this growing as local governments will be pressured to lower costs but maintain public safety. I'm not saying this will solve the issues, but I expect to see more and more departments trying this.
