oldgrumpygeek··on SpaceX Cut Out of Air Force Contracts for New Rockets
Title is a little misleading. SpaceX wasn't left out of the agreement. The Air Force is providing funding to Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman and ULA to develop the next generation of rockets and motors for each of these companies. SpaceX is already years ahead in the development phase. The Air Force is just trying to get everyone else up to speed.
oldgrumpygeek··on A Future Where Everything Becomes a Computer Is as Creepy as You Feared
As a security professional I think making the Government responsible for IoT security is a bad idea for two reasons. One, we've already seeing the Governments willingness to use cell phones as a means of spying on the public. Being in charge of security IoT just gives them more resources. Second, the powers that be can be lobbied but the companies they are supposed to be overseeing, Just look at Net neutrality as an example. In this case I feel that public is better off learning to secure their own devices and voting with their dollars. If company has bad security practices than don't buy from them. It will force them to make chances and send a message to other companies. This is one of those cases where I don't think government involvement is a good thing.
oldgrumpygeek··on Life Without a Destiny
I don't think the author realizes that she already has a single destiny, the pursuit of knowledge.
oldgrumpygeek··on Bitter Truth about Handling Customer Complaints:Brands That Learnt the Hard Way
I've always had a problem with the "Handling Customer Complaint #2 Apologize Immediately" thing both from a customer service rep and customer stand point. As a rep I really don't like to apologize for something someone else did or didn't do. It seems like a cheap get out of jail thing. I've always been a fix the problem person. I've found that if I listen to the issue and fix it fast there is no reason to apologize. Customers that complain demanding an apologize are more than likely looking to get a bigger, better deal out of you. I don't give in. If I did it then I'm more than happy to apologize. From a customer stand point I hate when a rep apologizes for something their just now hearing about. To me it sounds like empty lip service and they're looking to either empress their boss with how great their call resolution is or they're looking to get you off the phone faster. This pisses me off and is the quickest way for me to escalate a call just so I can yell at their supervisor. I'm kind of an asshole like that. If a company is so big on making a rep apologize for something they didn't do then maybe the C-suite crowd should take calls and see how it feels to get yelled at 8 hours a day for shitty pay. I was a call center rep for 3 years with a cell carrier. It's the whole reason I work in a non-customer service field now. Sorry to go on a rant. Customer service should be punishment for J-Walking or littering or something.
oldgrumpygeek··on Why Is the Home Building Industry Stuck in the 1940s? Embrace Pre-Fab Homes
I think the biggest drawback for pre-fab housing in the negative image that it is somehow lower quality construction. Some people even confuse it with mobile homes. I watched a season of This Old House recently were setup a pre-fab house for a family. It was very interesting. They brought in the house in section that were wired, plumbed and had future proofing setup. The house took a couple of month to put together, partly because of the weather and TV show been filmed around it but it went up quicker then most homes these days. The house was very nice. It looked like a $600,000 home in my part of the world.
oldgrumpygeek··on Ask HN: For next 10+ years What would be better Front end career, Web or Mobile?
Just my two cent worth but over the next five to ten years the lines between web and mobile are going to blur to the point they are one and the same.
oldgrumpygeek··on Ask HN: How did you learn python?
I had a couple of resources I used, CodeAcademy and a basic Python course on Udemy. As far as books I used Python Crash Course and Blackhat Python. Blackhat was more learning to write my own tools for pentesting. I also looked at a lot of the tools other folks wrote on github to see how they structured things. And I asked a lot of questions. By no means try one thing when learning Python or any language for that matter. Best advise I ever got from anyone was to write code everyday.
oldgrumpygeek··on Before inauguration Trump saw evidence Putin ordered election interference
I'm not seen much traction on this story in any of the main stream sources this morning. Sorry if this is a duplicate post but I think this is important enough that it needs to get out there more especially with the events of the week.
oldgrumpygeek··on The Koch brothers are campaigning against tax rises for public transit projects
It seems like a bit of class warfare on the part of the Koch's. Without public transportation people in lower income areas can't get to better jobs, healthcare or schools. People in these areas also don't have access healthy food because grocery stores won't open in areas where the majority of customers use food stamps and government aid. Yes current modes of transportation are becoming out dated the newer modes like self driving cars are not ready for the mass public. What the Koch's fail to grasp is that the more people making a living wage we have means we have less people living off entitlements like food stamps. If we have more people paying taxes instead of living off the taxes of other we will see improvements for all and possibly lower taxes due to a surplus not a deficit. Sorry for the soapbox.
oldgrumpygeek··on Beware the ‘mother of all credit bubbles’
When this bubble bursts(and it will) it will make the bank bailout like like loaning someone $20. The tax payers will get stuck with the bill while CEO's and Board of Directors pat themselves on the back and look for the next reason to steal from the American People. What really pisses me off it companies like Apple keep large amounts of cash overseas just so they don't have to pay taxes yet when the time comes they will be at the front of the line asking for a handout.
