okramcivokram··on Show HN: I'm Serving Esp32s31.fun
Nothing shows that this is actually running on bare metal. There's no description of how it was made, how is it connected, what technical limitations you had to work against or anything else that would make this interesting. The page itself is the only artifact.
okramcivokram··on Design 3D-printable parts by talking
I had some good results using CadQuery [1] with CQ-editor [2] for visualization driven by Claude Code enhanced by a cadquery-llm-skill [3]. I didn't make anything too complicated, just cases for various ESP32 projects I am tinkering with, but that was very easy just describing what I want and iterating and refining until I am satisfied. It was much easier than doing it manually in FreeCAD and more dynamic as the changes were cheap and not tedious to do.

okramcivokram··on Show HN: Wallfacer – A terminal session manager for Claude Code, and more
I just tell claude "Few days ago we worked on xxx, find the session and let's resume."
okramcivokram··on Teardown: A Generic 7-Port USB 3.0 Hub That Wasn't
I did use claude code with superpowers plugin and whatever opus version was active at that time. I already had tried it on another project so I had FSM design ready and the decision to use uv and platformio and so it was a smooth run. Described what I want in a few prompts and finalized the spec then let it write it. Wired it up and tested on hardware and after a few small revisions it was done. Few days later improved the design and now it has been running and used since then without issues.

You can check my own project doing the same. It's a one key keyboard that also can be set to jiggle the mouse a bit.

okramcivokram··on Want your images back? That'll be $5
I have received the email that my photobucket account is going to be deleted, so I've logged in after who knows how many years and got offered the same thing, to subscribe. Instead I've went to close the account and in the process (or somewhere else, don't remember exactly) there was an option to first download all the data which I've used and got the images back (there were just a few as I haven't used the service really), then I've closed the account. There was no need to subscribe.
okramcivokram··on Show HN: An easy-to-use online curve fitting tool
I've now tried it by adding a bunch of random points and I find it very cool! It can make curves fit very snugly. Maybe enhance it by a mode that runs all the models and shows you which one has the least errors/best fit.
okramcivokram··on Show HN: An easy-to-use online curve fitting tool
It'd be nice if there was some demo data because I might want to play with it to see how it works, but don't have any data to use it on.
okramcivokram··on TIL: The Data Furnace
During the Ethereum GPU mining craze I used ~10GPUs as a primary heat source for the whole house during the winter. It was awesome. For the first time I didn't have to care about using only 'cheap' electricity as it was not getting 'wasted' on heating only, but doing 'useful' work (mining). The only downside was the noise.
okramcivokram··on Reusable grocery bags durability test
From the article:

> The Canadian government counts bags containing plastic as reusable if they can withstand 100 trips of 53 metres each while carrying 10 kilograms, without breaking or tearing.

okramcivokram··on Video encoding requires using your eyes
I don't see (or maybe don't recognize) any issues with the image that they're talking about (ringing, color shift, or fake details). It most certainly doesn't look awful to me, it looks exactly the same, only a bit sharper.
okramcivokram··on I Got a Sleep Study in My 30s. It Probably Saved My Life
I don't understand how these types of devices are supposed to help, as it's not my nostrils that get blocked, but the far back of my throat.
okramcivokram··on Cutting Board Designer
"Random" should have some sanity checking, I doubt anyone can make a board with thousands of stripes with micron thickness with twenty different woods. Looks good though.
okramcivokram··on Welcome to Virtualdesktop.org
These are recreations of popular operating systems look and feel done in HTML, not actual virtual machines with original software as I expected.

I expected something like Fabrice Bellard's JSLinux [1], or PCjs [2] which I just found.

okramcivokram··on Simple streetlight hack could protect astronomy from urban light pollution
There are maps online [1],[2] that you can use. Oceans and deserts are the darkest, but national parks and sparsly populated areas are also a good choice. Of course, most of the time there’s nothing ‘nearby’ as population centers are always well lit.

okramcivokram··on Zimaboard: The closest thing to my dream home server setup
This one is x86 architecture, and if you need more speed, there's one 4x PCIe slot available for expansion.
okramcivokram··on Zimaboard: The closest thing to my dream home server setup
There’s also the upcoming Zima Blade that is very tiny too, quite a bit cheaper, with a SO-DIMM slot, single Ethernet port, and USB-C powered.
okramcivokram··on Passkeys will be importable, exportable, cross-device, and across managers
That's just how those vendors implemented it. There's nothing stopping you from using the TOTP apps that support the import/export functionality, as it's just strings, no secret sauce.
okramcivokram··on U.S. Hits Z-Library with New Domain Name Seizures
It's around 31TB right now, you can read more about it on https://annas-blog.org/ or get the data from https://annas-archive.org/
okramcivokram··on Modern Mono
I love them and use them everywhere I can, mostly with JS/TS. I find the code displayed with ligatures more readable, and the only time I notice any overhead is when modifying === to !== or back, when I have to remember that I have to change only the initial character. Having => as arrows instead of `equals+more than` is enough of improvement, for me, that I keep using them, even without all other tiny tweaks that they give you.

I used to use "Fira Code", but then I've migrated to "JetBrains Mono" everywhere.

okramcivokram··on Amsterdam looks incredibly realistic in the new Call of Duty
Looks very realistic, here's the same location in Google Street View https://goo.gl/maps/q2qrUGSoFEouq3Kj6
okramcivokram··on Ask HN: Why are bookmarks second class citizens in browsers?
Firefox has this feature. When you edit the bookmark, you have the "Keywords" field that says "Use a single keyword to open the bookmarks directly from the address bar".
okramcivokram··on A biological super glue from mistletoe berries?
I remember my neighbor using glue made from mistletoe berries to catch small colorful birds (80s eastern europe). I don't recall the exact process, but I think it involved cooking the berries and thickening of the glue. Then coating some thin branches and placing them near the already captured birds. Other birds would land on the treated branch and remain glued to it until freed.
okramcivokram··on The PalmOS powered wristwatch from Fossil
I am not wearing it every day, so it probably conserves energy when it's idle.
okramcivokram··on The PalmOS powered wristwatch from Fossil
I've got Huawei Watch GT2 and it feels like I recharge it once a month. I was honestly quite positively surprised by it, having expected having to recharge every 2-3 days.
okramcivokram··on Show HN: 4K Desktop Wallpaper Generator
I've added GUI where you can also pick the color and play around with other params. Check it out in this branch: https://github.com/markomarkovic/wallpaper-generator/tree/gu...
okramcivokram··on Ask HN: Functioning hidpi setup on Linux, how?
Sorry, it's tilix, not tilda.. used tilda for years until I got used to tilix and the splitting. I'm still missing the quake mode that's unavailable under wayland.
okramcivokram··on Ask HN: Functioning hidpi setup on Linux, how?
It simply works for me. My desktop is on Debian sid, running GNOME 41.0 on Wayland with dual monitor setup 3840×2160 and 1920×1200 on AMD graphics, and everything just works. I did deliberately buy AMD graphics because of the support. Laptop is also on sid, with Intel graphics and 4k display and there absolutely no issues there too. I don't see any blurriness in vscode or any other application that I use. But also, I'm not using a lot of graphical apps. Mostly it's just Firefox, vscode, android-studio, tilda, and sublime-merge.

okramcivokram··on Material-UI is releasing v5 and rebrands to mui.com
There's already a UI toolkit called MUI: "Magic User Interface" for Amiga relevant 'just' some 20-30 years ago :)
okramcivokram··on Elementary OS 6 Odin
I think the quicklook is available in gnome. I'm not sure how it compares to the osx one because I don't use anything apple, but selecting a file and pressing space in nautilus behaves as I expect quicklook to work. A preview of the file is shown. It doesn't work for all file types but the common ones (images, documents, videos, text files etc.) are shown.

I'm on GNOME 3.38.4 on Debian sid.
