okonomiyaki3000··on Mastodon still can’t replace Twitter
You don't need to replace Twitter. It doesn't need to exist in the first place. Just stop using it. Replace using Twitter with not using Twitter.
okonomiyaki3000··on Help pick a syntax for CSS nesting
I believe your understanding of the intention is correct and I totally agree with what you're saying about those involved in creating the standard. I just don't think they'll be able to evolve CSS into something preferable to using a preprocessor for many many years if ever.
okonomiyaki3000··on Help pick a syntax for CSS nesting
Don't try to imagine yourself writing this code. You won't have to. We have preprocessors and they'll always be better than writing plain css. One of these standards will be what preprocessors of the future will need to write. The result will be that your compiled css will be smaller than what is possible with today's standard. So don't choose the option that's easiest for you to write, choose the one that's small.

okonomiyaki3000··on YouTube suspends The Hill for playing clip of Trump denying election results
There's nothing wrong with a long, drawn-out fight through the proper channels. A couple of months is not really a long, drawn-out fight by the standards of the American legal system anyway. Gore owed it to everyone who voted for him to fight for his win to the full extent of the law, which he did. When that was exhausted, he stepped aside and stepped out of the public eye for a long time. He did not push beyond the limits of the law, he did not rally his supporters against the new administration, he did not immediately start running for the 2004 nomination. When he finally did start making news again, it was, as you said, 6 years later. Bush had already been reelected with no interference from Gore. He didn't reopen any wounds, "An Inconvenient Truth" was not a political statement, it was not a diatribe against his political foes, it was not a platform on which to build another run for president. It was a return to the core issues that drove him earlier in his career. Issues that should be non-political in the first place.

To say "Gore is better than Trump on this" is to imply that they are both operating in the same universe, just on different levels. That is a false premise. There can be no comparison here.

okonomiyaki3000··on Wordle is pretty damn smart in many subtle ways
I may be completely wrong but, after playing 3 or 4 times, I got the feeling that this game is very easy and involves more luck than skill or strategy. It looks and feels like a puzzle so you get the feeling of having solved something but have you, really? If you find the word in 3 tries 90% of the time, does it mean you're actually better at the game than someone who usually needs 4 or 5 attempts? Or are you just a little luckier?
okonomiyaki3000··on Did a Cuttlefish Write This?
TL;DR No.
okonomiyaki3000··on Pop psychology has killed the villain
The article frames the issue in way that's too black-and-white. Providing a backstory isn't necessarily bad storytelling it's just very difficult to get right so that most prequels, backstories, and flashbacks do not turn out well. It is absolutely a fair criticism to say that Hollywood uses prequels to milk existing IP and there are endless examples of cases where a vague or mysterious backstory was preferable to the one some studio decided to canonize. That's not always the case though.

Rogue One worked because it provided plausible explanations for points about the original film that didn't seem to make any sense. It seemed impossible that the Death Star could be destroyed so easily or that the rebels could find that flaw so quickly. Now we see why. Solo fell flat because nothing about Solo's past, as depicted in the film, significantly changed how we see his character.

I suppose Joker worked for some people because every version of the Joker is different so you could look at Joaquin Phoenix's Joker as a stand-alone character driven to insanity through various things in his life. It surely didn't work for anyone who expected an origin story for a version of the character that would eventually turn out anything like Heath Ledger's Joker. It's just not possible to draw a line from one to the other.

I'm sure it's been like this for some time already. I often click links (many from HN) and end up on their login screen. It might as well be a 404.

okonomiyaki3000··on SETI@home shuts down after 21 years
A lot of nostalgia in this thread but don't be too sad to see it go. It was only ever a waste of energy for everyone involved. If you want to put your extra processor cycles to a good cause, there are much more worthy projects like Folding@home
okonomiyaki3000··on UFO: Pilot who spotted famous Tic Tac breaks silence after 15 years
But why would they have come here hundreds of years ago? They'd have had to leave their planet hundreds (if not thousands) of years before that. Meanwhile, Seinfeld hasn't even reached them yet. What did they find so interesting about our system so many years ago that they would expend the time and energy for such a project? Who is paying for this?
okonomiyaki3000··on A new treatment promises to make little people taller
Being short is not a flaw but dwarfism is not the same as simply being shorter than average. It is objectively a flaw because it can directly lead to various other health problems.

Van Gogh was colorblind. Had his parents been able to cure him of it at a young age, we would likely not have any of his works now. I'm not trying to make any argument by saying this. I don't know what it means.

okonomiyaki3000··on A new treatment promises to make little people taller
Also, it must be administered to children. It's not a cure for adults. So the implication is that parents find something wrong with their own dwarf children. Someone once said "All dwarfs are bastards in their father's eyes." which is surely not true but still, you can imagine how this could be a sensitive topic. It seems to be much clearer if you only look at it as a treatment that prevents a whole bunch of other problems that are likely to occur later in life but, you know, humans don't always look at things in the most sensible ways.
okonomiyaki3000··on A new treatment promises to make little people taller
Because, before you can cure something, you have to admit that the condition was a kind of flaw in the first place. Maybe it's easy for most of us to say that dwarfism clearly is a flaw but, if you were a dwarf, you may see it differently.

There was a similar outcry some years ago when there was talk of a cure for some kind of deafness. And, it's a little different, but kind of similar to Iceland's near elimination of Down Syndrome.

okonomiyaki3000··on Cats Cannot Taste Sweets (2007)
For some reason, our cat used to be absolutely crazy for anko. The first time he ever encountered it, he stole a dorayaki out of someone's hands and hid with it in the closet growling (it was wrapped in plastic so he couldn't actually eat it). After that, I used to give him a tiny taste any time I had some but I noticed he would always throw up soon after. Now that he's a bit older he seems to have no interest in it at all.

Could it be that they can taste sweets at a young age but gradually lose that ability?

okonomiyaki3000··on A neural network to auto-complete your thoughts
These aren't the droids you're

looking for, and you are in fact in a very bad mood, which is why you should keep an eye out for such a small drop. (2)

In other words, even if you're in a good mood, you should keep an eye out for a small drop or a small drop of sadness , because this behavior can easily lead to you getting in trouble with your family (3).

However, this type of behavior is extremely rare, and it can make it difficult for the doctor to conduct research for patients who are in a situation where they cannot be properly treated with medication, and that their family member is in the mood.

okonomiyaki3000··on California bans private prisons
What we want is not just less recidivism but fewer people going to prison in the first place. If you're getting paid for lower recidivism rates, you'll want to increase the rate of people going to prison one time, not zero times. It means you might lobby for the kinds of laws that would make that happen or you might bribe judges to get the kind of inmates you want (which might mean people who are possibly innocent or would really be better off with probation or house arrest).
