okdjnfweonfe··on Guess which Fortune 50 company won't make employees get vaccinated?
Presumably since they feel its a privacy violation to ask about vaccination status, they are going to just assume everyone isn't vaccinated and run their offices as such?
okdjnfweonfe··on It's weird that most of “Hacker” news is dominated by business news

Seemingly yes, also all DNS SEC is exploding

A bit frustrating but unsurprising considering everything else this week!

Loading time is ok for people who are expecting to land on an interactive page, but for people who are expecting to just go to a page otherwise its a bit crazy.

Additionally, I found myself scrolling to the next interactive instead of reading anything inbetween, I'm sure it will result in a good viral effect, but maybe ? not so much on conversions

maybe a call to action? "Music is fun, know what else is fun? investing with us ->" or something like that

> The guidelines (as you probably already knew) also say that if you have a question about moderation, send us an email instead of posting about it on the site.

Except after all that, the mods still systematically remove useful information from titles, Which in turn means that the moderation methods arn't changed to benefit the userbase, which means, why bother emailing anyways?

And it wasn't a question, it was a request

okdjnfweonfe··on God Is as Real as You
As I said

> it reaches the unfun point of people searching for dictionaries so they can have the winning definitions of words, as opposed to discussing the core aspects.

No one wants to play, "X does Y" "Oh but actually X is (a different definition of X)"

Its argument baiting, and its also wrong, Neuroscience doesn't have a stance on the philosophical questions of consciousness, And the philosophical questions of consciousness majorly assume that it exists.

> Electricity and neurotransmitters slosh around and cause those things.

Thats parts of my meatbag of an entity, which is recognized by most governments, and almost every person in the world, to be "me", to be the person that I am, everyone agrees this is a fine definition, but whatever.

This arbitrary meatbag with energy in it makes a noise, the god meatbag does not make a noise.

A brick makes a noise when its dropped, god doesn't

Atoms interact with one another via their forces, god doesn't

Its the exact same statement as before just with some words changed over. There is no value add to this.

By concluding that humans are as real as dirt and bricks brings god no closer to evidence.

okdjnfweonfe··on God Is as Real as You
> In fact, just like with the invisible dragon in the garage, when we look at your brain to find you, we see nothing. You are the invisible dragon in the garage of the brain.

Except I can scream really loud, god can't

I effect things, the invisible dragon doesn't effect things, just going "both of these are invisible" misses the point of that, IMO

- - -

But then we can go with "oh but people obviously are affected by god la it changes how they act and how they reason" or "What is effecting things actually, does anyone but you know you exist? is anyone else real?" or other such stuff but, it reaches the unfun point of people searching for dictionaries so they can have the winning definitions of words, as opposed to discussing the core aspects.

Mathematicians don't seek to make their proofs as over the top complicated as possible, bringing in multiple schools of thought, just to say if X is or is not equal to God.

- - -

God is meant to have presence in everyone's life, yet, for my perspective and I imagine for the perspective of others, he doesn't. So either he doesn't, or he is hiding, if he is hiding, he probably has a good reason to, probably doesn't want the worship.

okdjnfweonfe··on Postgres Core Team launches unprecedented attack against the Postgres Community
The point of trademarks is to be able to clearly say "SomeName is X", or in context, to be able to refer to a specific kit of software, not a fork or the such, not a competing DB, etc, but to know that when I say "PostgreSQL" I'm talking about PostgreSQL

> Fundación PostgreSQL “allows [their trademarks] to be used freely, under all provisions of goods and services covered by the respective Nice classifications, under the registered designations, provided that its use constitutes a fair use aligned with the Goals of the Foundation as specified in its Statutes"

Doesn't seem to give anyone a useful trademark, well except for an anarchist perhaps!

okdjnfweonfe··on 'I made a mistake. NFTs are going to be much bigger than I anticipated.'
"tall columns of money" isn't a convincing argument IMO

What metrics are there that indicate long term trust in NFTs? How many % NFTs no longer point to any existant information? How many % NFTs legally relate to ownership of something?

People acting like saying "I own this house, signed, me" means that they are entitled to the entire value of a house, And well, sure, Dollars are like that with "I own X worth of gold not really, signed the government", but we already have funny fiat, we already have funny cryptocurrencies with zero backing value, now we have funny cryptocurrency thingamabobs with zero backing value.

How is this ever more than re-inventing a re-invented re-invented re-invented wheel? Why should one care this time, other than to ride the pump and dump?

okdjnfweonfe··on Web3 is a stupid idea
Really wish progressive enhancement was chosen as the first thing, want to get rid of the backend db? ok, two APIs,

store to extension-managed DB (e.g. flatfiles in the home directory, or shunted onto something managed with LDAP, or loaded onto some weird coin thing on a local light node, or etc),

or in environments where extensions are fussy / overcomplicated, store to another website via a http api (la https://remotestorage.io/, or if one wants to overcomplicate it again, a remotestorage-to-weird-blockchain-thing-shim)

- - -

For the article itself, deriding web3 as "Money websites" and then basically asking for "Lightweight money websites" is a bit pointless. Storing stuff on "Money" is a big overhead, If you were to decide to write your data onto a gold ingot, you'd probably not enjoy the process of going to the bank safe deposit box each time to make a change or read a change, likewise, money websites are going to be encumbered with risk, endless layers of crypto math un-understanding, and stress.

Don't worry, someone might make a contract to provide that fine grained API you want, and that contract might not have bugs, and the tooling used might not be able to be tricked to use some other contract as an api since you know, decentralized, shouldn't be able to use only 1 implementation right

Or, if you remove money from the equation, like, hell, replace it with text files or something, even if users need to exchange text files with each other to update each other's pages (ok a bit overkill, webrtc should suffice, still requires both people online at the same time though), it still removes a lot of emotional stress

okdjnfweonfe··on Almost free serverless on-demand Minecraft server in AWS
Could combine both: a vps running a login-message-only server, that spins up another server and then touches the DNS settings: As a bonus this "fixes" all the issues with proxying (doesn't erase the end user's IP or other such metadata for moderating)

So, convincing people to subsidize my spending? the sell is that they too might convince others to subsidize their spending?

Or, a pyramid scheme with a product to make it legal, la Multi Level Marketing?

Except even MLM people might see a payout, with this it only goes into discounts

Considering the further legal issues on that, and the relative lack of innovation, hard pass.

okdjnfweonfe··on Show HN: I made an app to draw stickers for iMessage, Discord, and Slack
stickers are the half-way point between images and emoji, as in, bigger emoji, usually sent without a message.

Some platforms upgrade emoji to stickers when used solo (telegram for example)

there isn't anything majorly special about them on any platform AFAIK

okdjnfweonfe··on The Future of discord.py
Since he's stepping down, I hope he opens an avenue for donations. Watching some of the earlier drama as it was happening (fwiw only hinted at in the gist) was disheartening. I'm surprised that he managed to not only make it through 1 rewrite but almost make it through another, of a relatively complete codebase too.

Even though unpaid in the programming field, very much a professional IMO.

So part of the concern is that kids are going to treat masks as security blankets? I can understand some of the concern about learning social skills but that ends up reaching a bit far IMO

> “0.00%-0.03% of all child COVID-19 cases resulted in death”

Don't forget to then consider the chance of the likely two guardians of the child, who would likely implicitly get covid as well, and then don't forget the % that they will require treatment, in turn taking treatment away from others when resources are stretched as they have been

okdjnfweonfe··on Phones containing magnets inhibit implantable cardioverter defibrillators

Kinda worth making some drama about it, no?

okdjnfweonfe··on Signal on Android: Images sent to wrong contacts
its probably not using chat keys for the db, for the sake of being indexable
okdjnfweonfe··on Signal on Android: Images sent to wrong contacts
Probably by installing some hardened memory on your phone to prevent cosmic bitflips or the such.

Unless you are going to go to NASA lengths of hardware reliability, you can't really hope much for the software that has to deal with the issues of... how many different android phones are there?

okdjnfweonfe··on Microsoft’s New 3D Emoji
Seems a bit of a daft move, the old emoji were made to deal with the fact that Windows has to deal with a much wider range of acceptable resolutions and DPIs than their competitors (apple's high DPI screens, google's focus on phones)

I don't think that premise has changed in such a short time, though I could be wrong.

Luckily this seems restricted to what is being done through online services, like other platforms which replace singular emoji with the equivalent stickers while still keeping a separate emoji font for when they are used as part of a message
