okatsu··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
Yeah I find the language laws thing funny. I've worked with a crapton of people who never had to learn a word of French, and if they ever have to, then so what? French is the language here. That's like complaining about Italian in Italy.
okatsu··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
I'm a second-generation immigrant born and raised in Montreal.

Quebec's language is French and historically speaking it has every reason to attempt to protect it. Should immigration be more accommodating towards people willing to learn French? Probably. In my lifetime though I've mostly encountered anglophones who chose Quebec out of all provinces but then refused to speak the language, so shrug.

And yeah there are stupid politicians who say stupid things, just like in the States where some promise to throw out Mexicans and Muslims.

okatsu··on Jan Koum to leave after broad clashes with Facebook
I'm glad it's working well you but neither Signal nor Wire took acceptable amounts of time to sync my messages versus every other networked app I use.
okatsu··on Jan Koum to leave after broad clashes with Facebook
The last time I had looked into it, somebody on the Signal github suggested otherwise. I hope you're right but either way that doesn't change the fact that this problem is still present today.
okatsu··on Jan Koum to leave after broad clashes with Facebook
My main problem with Signal (and similar apps like Wire) is syncing messages across devices. I'd often find myself turning on my home computer after work and having to wait a while for the desktop app to finally finish syncing with my phone and allowing me to chat. Call me spoiled but after experiencing that every night it started to grate on me.
okatsu··on BlackBerry Inventor Says Canada's Challenge Is Keeping Techies
"As for health insurance, the system works if you have a good job with good benefits."

That's kind of an important "if", though. My mother had a menial job when she was diagnosed with lung cancer and I wouldn't have been able to cover her with my health insurance. She unfortunately passed away but at least the attempted treatments didn't cost us anything.

What do you do if you lose your job and suddenly fall severely ill? Return to Canada?

okatsu··on Low-Level Programming University – A roadmap to becoming a low-level programmer
According to vocal Trump supporters, America doesn't need or want anything to do with my ethnicity anyways ;)
okatsu··on Low-Level Programming University – A roadmap to becoming a low-level programmer
Please don't spread generalizations like these. I'm sorry about the job situation in your area but I live in a Canadian metropolis where 1) there's no shortage of low-level work and 2) they will pay much more than your average PHP consulting shop. In fact, I maxed out very early what someone can hope to earn at my level of experience.

My point is that your job market is not representative of the whole world and you're acting as if it were.

okatsu··on Casual Introduction to Low-Level Graphics Programming
Calm down. Stephanie has worked at Oculus and Unity and continues to do contract work in AR/VR while running a two-person company with Rich Geldreich from Valve.

I have some problems with the post as well but the author's knowledge of graphics is not at stake here.

okatsu··on Facebook Messenger protocol in Pidgin
Yeah as much as I appreciate the concept of XMPP, I find it unlikely that the average person cares about that sort of stuff. Of course, I'm limited to the people I know, so maaaaybe I'm mistaken, but if you think about the average Facebook user (Joe Smith, has 600 friends he barely knows, likes to quote songs in his statuses), what are the odds they would NOT want a dedicated app or tab?
okatsu··on FastMail: Shutting down our XMPP chat service
The SMS protocols are indeed not proprietary (all the specs are online) but you'll either need a contract with an aggregator or with every mobile network operator you'd like to send traffic to. Not very handy. :)
okatsu··on Breaking all the Eggs in C++
Your argument is that people only use C++ because of existing libraries and engines

My response is that we use C++ for the language itself, existing engine or not. :)

okatsu··on Breaking all the Eggs in C++
C with classes is often frowned upon but I'm actually okay with it. It keeps things simple while still allowing for a few benefits. I think the Mars Rover project is a good example of that.
okatsu··on Breaking all the Eggs in C++
Any large enough game will use C/C++ at its core because short of using assembly, it's the only real choice we have. C#, Lisp or whatever else are nice for gameplay scripting, but underneath there is a need for control that most languages will not give you. Same thing for anything with hard real-time requirements.
okatsu··on Stalking Your Friends with Facebook Messenger
I'm glad the 20-somethings in your circle haved moved off of Facebook, but mine haven't, including my girlfriend. I'm just not willing to be the one guy always insisting we IM on something else. I might get rid of it upon graduation but until then it's the de facto communication tool and it's not worth the hassle to fight this.
okatsu··on Why is everyone so busy?
I think it depends on the individual; I know I can't drive and pay attention to the radio or an audiobook at the same time. I could easily miss a red light.

And sure, commutes are routine, but you're not driving with the same people every day under the same conditions. I've lost count of the times I had to evade someone doing something stupid.

okatsu··on Comparing Rust and C++
You not knowing anybody who uses RTTI doesn't mean much. I know people who use it. Our coding standard at work is mostly based on Meyers and Alexandrescu's guidelines.

Chrome and Qt's standards and design choices are their business and do not mean there is no recommended way to do things.

okatsu··on Show HN: Hosty – Image/Text self-hosting for minimalists in PHP
Don't sweat it, people would've complained either way. Like you said earlier, it's a build requirement, not a runtime one, and there are advantages to using these tools.
okatsu··on Show HN: Hosty – Image/Text self-hosting for minimalists in PHP
Aside from Composer (which is a good thing for managing dependencies), I'm not sure why you would think "this is how people develop and deploy PHP stuff nowadays". The author uses these tools out of choice, not convention. Just like some Ruby devs use Bower and others don't.
okatsu··on Secure Mail for Devs
Is it a selling point with much substance, though? Genuinely curious. Seems to me that if the American government wanted your data for some reason, obtaining it from Germany wouldn't be so hard.
okatsu··on Google to close engineering office in Russia
I don't understand your point. Two people did something bad, so that means the promotion of LGBT rights as a whole is wrong?

Would you like to count how many heterosexuals are in prison for doing the same?

okatsu··on Google to close engineering office in Russia
"Their" referring to the Putin government.

You can't really use Sochi as an example. The Olympics are a very important international event and Russia wanted the good publicity. You'll also notice that Putin ordered the release of many political prisoners just in time for that event.

okatsu··on Google to close engineering office in Russia
Did you just compare a minor being told that homosexuality is okay to having sex with an adult?

And as I've said earlier, that basically prevents any public promotion.

okatsu··on Google to close engineering office in Russia
It's the same law; their logic is that promoting LGBT rights means promoting deviant sexual behaviour, and doing so publicly will inevitably reach children.
okatsu··on Google to close engineering office in Russia
Speaking in favor of gay rights is considered propaganda and was made illegal last year.
okatsu··on Google to close engineering office in Russia
I won't disagree that demonizing Putin is what the government wants us to do. I remember how the U.S. funded Saddam to use chemical weapons on Iran and then overthrew him "for the sake of the people."

However, it should also be kept in mind that we're still far away from the Russian regime where speaking against the government (releasing classified documents doesn't count) or being a homosexual will land you in jail.

So yeah, no one's perfect, but I'll stick to North America for the time being, thanks.

okatsu··on Who's Using Ada? Real-World Projects Powered by the Ada Programming Language
As a college student, is Ada still worth learning for (Canadian) development jobs in critical systems? I'd like to think it would give me an edge coming out of school, but I keep reading that new applications are being written in C/C++.

Edit: In fact, I interned at an avionics company and they're slowly trying to entirely switch to model-based development, using certified software that generates the code for you.

okatsu··on Bolt: A low-level key/value database for Go
I'm still new to Go, but the functions don't have to be anonymous, right? What would be wrong with defining all of your functions somewhere (for updates, iterations, etc.) and passing them by name to Bolt's?
okatsu··on Introducing .NET Core
Can we stop with this kind of comment, already? Yes it has its warts but like it or not a fair amount of people enjoy using it. Get over it.
okatsu··on Workshape.io – Talent matching for tech startups
I never said Git == GitHub.

I meant that they don't even know Git, let alone GitHub.
