No idea how they associated it - possibly taken from my chrome login on previous install and then tied it with some combination of licence key, hardware id and IP.

I certainly never gave it to MS nor did I request the reset, nor did I log in to gmail on the new install.

I recently reinstalled Windows Home.

It's not possible to install a local account any more. Apparently all the loopholes have been closed. It just loops you back to the "oops looks like you lost internet access" page.

I made a new account - installer<date>@outlook.com with no@thankyou.com as the backup email (which you have to give). Microsoft didn't like that, so it made me go through 10 minutes of captchas (captcas in the OS install - wtf)

Then it forced me to give it my birth date, ostensibly to check if I'm of age. Could just ask "are you older than 13" but then you don't get that sweet data.

Finally I booted into the OS, and I made a local account.

I spent 30 minutes going through the awful menus trying and probably failing to disable all the crap that sends all my data to Microsoft. Some of which can't be disabled in the Home edition.

Then I tried to delete my "installer" account. Oops, sorry, we have to "verify" who you are by sending an email to no@thankyou.com. Oh, you don't have that? No worries, just give us your real email address and we'll allow you to log you in after 30 days.

Then later I check my real name gmail account and there's a Microsoft email with a login code. I never gave MS this email address. What the hell??

Why do you need to argue (whatever that means to you)? Just take a ticket, do the work, and check out mentally at the end of the day.

Much of the improvement in working conditions, general welfare and home ownership came from western elites' fear of communism.

As that fear recedes, elites feel more comfortable squeezing us.

Windows settings have always been bad, but the new UI is truly an atrocity.

I think it's intentional because they don't really want users changing stuff, especially the spyware parts.

Android is also truly horrible, with some settings (like privacy settings) redirecting you to a sluggish embedded remote web page.

Fundamentally it's really "practical" issue. We want to use, abuse and kill animals and we make up justifications.

Really? China's co2 emission per capita is half of the US.

1. Nobody chooses Microsoft - it's rammed down their throats by corp IT or gaming addiction. 2. Alternatives are $3000 macs with 1% of the ecosystem, or an enthusiast OS that doesn't work with the most popular graphics card vendor and constantly breaks.

Adding weight to the screen makes it more awkward to handle, particularly on a lap. Same problem tablets with attached keyboards have.

I think as power consumption only gets worse for GPUs, external GPUs is the solution that makes the most sense...

And actually I found little landlords to be the most "profit maximizing", petty, cruel and stupid. At least big organizations have some sort of reputation to protect, unlike anonymous landlords.

Given how useful having a screen is and how little space it takes up, it seems much better to just buy a normal laptop and AR glasses separately.

To counter your anecdote, I was doing something on my boss's computer and clicked refuse all on the google prompt. My boss was surprised and said she thought the site wouldn't work if you refused. We're software engineers.

To me KDE 1 and 2 looked great. KDE 3 and 4 were just ugly and unusable.

KDE 5 and 6 look ok I guess, but are buggier and perform worse than XFCE, so why would I ever use them?
