okaram··on S.F. population fell 6.3%, most in nation, to lowest level since 2010
And I'd assume house selling is fairly elastic in the short term. If property prices go down, people would decide to wait.
okaram··on The tech sector teardown is more catharsis than crisis
10x deba exist for a given project. The same dev can be amazing in one environment and suck on a different one.
okaram··on Equality is prevented by the misperception that it harms advantaged groups
> Using authority to take power over their own children away from parents isn't something I'm sure I'm onboard with.

Just in case you have not noticed, we do that nowadays, to combat child abuse. Giving parents 100% unrestricted power over their children would enable horrific child abuse, selling your children for slavery etc ... Funny how casually it can be suggested.

The answer lies in the middle, as the parent post suggested :)

okaram··on US plans campaign to attract Russian scientists, engineers to America & CERN
And how is that different from today?
okaram··on US plans campaign to attract Russian scientists, engineers to America & CERN
Meh ... PhD are super-specialized, which is great if that's what you are looking for, but may not be particularly good if not.

For example, a person with a PhD in history will probably be a good writer and researcher, but may need a couple of years training and experience before they're an amazing journalist, for example, and may only be OK at PR, even after a couple of years. If you want PR 'talent' then the history PhDs would not be very helpful.

A bio PhD would be amazing at many things, but would probably suck as a nurse.

So it's not just the raw talent, but also training and inclination.

okaram··on U.S. interest rates have soared everywhere but savings accounts
Yearly inflation seems to be going up mainly due to how it is calculated ... Monthly inflation seems to be going mostly sideways (although it has increased the last 3 months).

There's not (yet) been a market crash ... If you look back a month or a year, it's been mostly sideways too.

It may be the beginning of a horrible market crash ... But it may not ;). Trying to time the market, you're just as likely to lose as to win. Diversifying is always good; the stock market has usually provided the most growth long term. Unless you need the money soon, close your eyes and keep your money in the market.

okaram··on U.S. interest rates have soared everywhere but savings accounts
Real interest rates were negative, unless you expect prices to be 9% higher than now next year
okaram··on Single mom sues coding boot camp over job placement rates
They do ... but it is called an associates degree and takes 3-4 semesters. A one semester course is snake oil in most cases.
okaram··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
> This only solves the problem of the HUGE number of people with crushing loan debt now.

That's a big problem solved. We can also solve other problems. Nothing requires us to solve all of them at the same time.

okaram··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
Private elite institutions (Yvies) offer excellent education, and networking with really rich people ;). Some people already had that, some will make economic use of it, and some not. I assume the variance within-group is very very high, so you can probably calculate stats to defend any point. And then the cost also varies, so ...

'Elite' state schools (GA Tech, Michigan State? Etc) probably have excellent ROI.

Expensive, not really elite schools are probably not worth it on average, but again, cost varies highly, so ...

okaram··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
Maybe ... I think IBM, for example did, and others might.

OTOH, it may be easier and cheaper to make an agreement with their local community college.

I think what makes the discussion hard is that people say 'college' and mean wildly different things. The author seemed to mean elite colleges in some comments, overall statistics in others, and for-profits in others. I think there are very different problems in different sectors.

okaram··on Deep learning is hitting a wall?
Well ... Artificial means created by humans, right? ;)
okaram··on SikuliX – Automate what you see on a computer monitor
If anybody else is seeing the server dying, the project is on github https://sikulix.github.io/
okaram··on Ask HN: Is there anywhere to buy a Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 at a “normal” price now?
Are you near a microcenter? They tend to have them, store only, and limit the number you can buy, so they don't all disappear.
okaram··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
Meh ... It's the top 10% at interviewing and moving, not necessarily the most productive 10%, right? Although they may be over-represented.
okaram··on Evidence for a mouse origin of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant
I think this is mostly asking how many angels can dance on the head of a pin ...

What definitive evidence can we provide of an animal host now? What definitive evidence can we provide of a lab leak? Of a deliberate release?

I don't think we can provide definitive evidence for any of the options, that proponents of another theory, even the reasonable ones, will accept, so ... I believe it is exactly 3 angels.

okaram··on It’s mostly a demand shock, not a supply shock, and it’s everywhere
I may be wrong, but I don't think we need anything special to explain this, other than COVID.

Covid came, the economy died. No travel, restaurants, theaters etc, plus work clothes, beauty products ... Now covid is less of a problem every day, and those things are coming back ... we have a huge demand shock.

okaram··on Racket v8.3
Definitely do sicp eventually, but you don't have to start there ... the little schemer is an amazing intro, and htdp is a much easier way to start.
okaram··on Pfizer's oral Covid-19 antiviral cuts hospitalization, death by 85%
There is no evidence ivermectin works against COVID. There is still one large study running, I think, that might show a small effect, but definitely not a big effect.

Sorry you had a severe issue with your vaccine.

okaram··on Human History Gets a Rewrite
Well, except for that, and maternal mortality, war and famine, infectious diseases ...

The max has not really changed that much, and modern life may be killing some people, but the percentage of people who survive from 25 to 75 has also improved a lot.

okaram··on It's not a labor shortage – it's a wage and workers rights shortage
How is this different than 'nice' fast food restaurants? Chainwise, Chipotle or similar?
okaram··on The case for mutual educational disarmament
Do you have a ref for any state that is eliminating magnets? I hadn't heard ...
okaram··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
There's a bunch of foods that are a pain to make, or will make your kitchen smell ... Plus having different plates for everyone is also super convenient
okaram··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
But what would prevent Amazon/Walmart to raise wages even more? That is what they are doing now, right?
okaram··on mRNA Vaccines May Pack More Persistent Punch Against Covid-19 Than Thought
For now? Everyone, because they are saying the exact same thing, but people/media focus on one aspect.

Current consensus is that vaccines are very effective, at least for 6 months, probably a year or more; however, chances are we will need booster shots, we don't know when. People at higher risk will probably need them sooner. If worse variants develop, we will all need them sooner.

Depending on how the question is asked, or who is writing the headline, they will either emphasize 'probably needed' or 'not yet'.

okaram··on Google reports soaring attrition among Black women
Meh ... saying it is dangerous doesn't make it so.

By saying it, you both get to piss on the 'woke' (which I assume this person is not), plus, if you happen to say any of the quiet parts out loud, you are somewhat protected.

okaram··on Are beliefs like clothes? (2015)
This is close to utilitarian ethics. The problem is that, taken to the extreme, it is easy to yield obviously wrong moral decisions.

For example, if we define 'survive as long as possible' as having 1+ humans alive, we might decide we should kill 1/2 of the population (Thanos did nothing wrong).

okaram··on Internal Amazon documents shed light on how company pressures out office workers
Up until a couple of years ago, they did get stock (Amazon doesn't give you options, but stock grants). Not sure if that ended when they made the salary $15.

If by 'logistics' you mean the people who pack/ship etc, warehouse work sucks, but Amazon has better salary and conditions than most others (pee bottle jokes aside).

If you mean the warehouse supervisors, analysts, etc, they get paid fairly well.

okaram··on Ask HN: Projects for learning a language?
But it hasn't been done by you, in that language, right? Yoy are doing it mainly for learning.

Also, you will find you end up with a somewhat different feature set, get to fix what annoys you.

okaram··on Apology
I'd modify that statement a little. If I'm in a position of power, I owe it to less-powerful people in my 'team' to protect them from bullies.

In a work situation, I would expect my boss to 'defend' me, or at least defuse the situation if somebody was berating me.
