ogoparootbbo··on ChatGPT: China's AI Researchers React
This makes me wonder: China was poised to beat the US in the AI race, why .. why is it that with all their resources and government backing did a llm of chatgpt's magnitude and capability not materialize in China first?
ogoparootbbo··on Smells a little bit like AI winter?
I used to think Gary Marcus is a voice of reason in the AI field. Now I think he's just a moron shouting hoopla over and over again. Insecurity piling from his work not being relevant any more?
ogoparootbbo··on DeepMind has open-sourced the heart of AlphaGo and AlphaZero
The human in the loop reinforcement learning paper that powered chatgpt's training arose from deepmind's experiments with boardgames (and games). AGI is still an unsolved problem and deep RL that arose from the success of deepmind's experiments wth boardgames and games so far, will likely play a huge part in it
ogoparootbbo··on Mexican jumping beans use random walk strategy to find shade: study
err, I maybe hugely mistaken but is this an example of a real life of the following joke: "a scientist had this experiment going wherein everytime he rung a bell the grasshopper would jump. He clips one of the grasshopper's legs and rings the bell to see if the grasshopper would still jump and it did. He repeated the clipping process till the grasshopper had no legs. He wondered if it would still jump ... and it did not. He muttered to himself that hence that proves grasshoppers use their legs to hear"

am wondering it this is an example of a teleological thinking?

ogoparootbbo··on Marie Kondo Gives Up
I guess that goes to show no ideology scales well either over time or space/resource
ogoparootbbo··on Unconditional Love
> masochist love: give no matter what, even if you are abused -unconditional love: give freely, trust in the relationship

the way you describe both lends well to the idea both are definitely not distinct things. I'm not sure how you've seem to convince yourself otherwise

ogoparootbbo··on Ask HN: How has functional programming influenced your thinking?
ad-hoc abstraction is the secret sauce that destroys code bases in the long run and makes things horrendously complex. Composition based on mathematics is more likely to survive years of serving as atomic elements than anything based on ad-hoc human intuition

Composition is hard

ogoparootbbo··on Ask HN: How to restore cognition after years of trauma? I feel slow and dumb
OP there is a lot of potentially dangerous ideas on here. I do not know what your situation is or your mindset, but for the love of all things good and to reiterate what you already probably know. Exercise caution when lapping in these recommendations and stick to basic stuff as much as possible i.e exercise and sleep and mental exercises.
ogoparootbbo··on Ask HN: What is your favorite front end state management solution?

ogoparootbbo··on Ask HN: What is your favorite front end state management solution?

Nope, it's the other way around

ogoparootbbo··on Has anyone improved their energy levels dramatically over the years?
I think you'll need to be very specific about what you mean by good food. Nutrition is a shaky science. I think there's something to be said about motivation. While discipline definitely trumps motivation, I reason when you focus too much on discipline it becomes one those "problem-solving for the sake of problem-solving becomes boring pretty fast" sorta ordeals. Whatever your source of motivation is, question it.

ogoparootbbo··on Is our definition of burnout all wrong?
> People who can't unplug from the 24/7 news feed and instead adopt the world's stresses on to themselves, manifesting as a never-ending cycle of stress and doom

The adopting the world's stresses seems to be something I've observed with the newer generations. No actual problem solving but merely adopting the stress which I wonder is a symptom of being overly empathetic but I can't understand why the adoption doesn't progress into actual problem solving? Is it because the average joe regardless of the generation is a bad problem solver and more unrefined free stress is bound to paralyze said joe. Or is it something else?

ogoparootbbo··on Why Functional Programming Should Be the Future of Software Development
Common Lisp isn't exactly functional. At this point python is as functional as Common lisp but you wouldn't call Python functional
ogoparootbbo··on [dead]
I am of the same opinion but I've seen some adopted kids (brought to the first world) who are more than ready to throw away the adopted family and all the goodwill thrown their way just to get a chance of getting with their biological parents (third world, not well off) regardless of how the latter might not want to have any connection.

Sometimes it seems our base instinct make for the undoing of the quote "the covenant of brotherhood is thicker than the water of the womb" sadly

ogoparootbbo··on The next century of computing
> Sensory augmentation tools will be developed for software development. It will be possible to listen to sounds that communicate useful information about the structure and behavior of code

One wonders if this is outlandish to high noon or just lack of imagination on one's part. Has anyone heard of such a thing before?

ogoparootbbo··on AI Researcher wants computer scientists to move beyond the matrix
I think TPUs and Tensorflow misname multidimension arrays as tensors and don;t actually use tensors. It could be the case I'm being a stickler https://math.stackexchange.com/questions/1134809/are-there-a...
