Be wary if a company avoids Google. For example Tinder started forcing users to subscribe directly instead of using Google. This is because most people cancel almost immediately since once you subscribe you find all your matches are bots.
The entire purpose is to make it just hard enough so you think ohh it's only 10$ a month. Another trick is to offer a month free. Hulu does this. If you cancel on their website you get several pages which try to convince you to stay.
Google also makes it easy to manage all your subscriptions in one place. What is all this crap I'm paying for, I can quickly see what and delete it. Also I'm much more likely to try a service ( I'm studying Chinese right now and have used various apps) if I can do it via Google Play .
On the other hand, if they win can I argue Epic needs to let me sell costumes for Fortnite ?
Apple has a right to control it's store , and they have a right to only allow their app store.
Consumers who don't like this can use Android or Pinephone .
In fact this could be a boon to FOSS phones
Your sitting from an upper middle class position. Working class people don't want to risk missing a check.
The opportunity costs + stress isn't worth it.
I almost felt the dejection in his voice, as in without a good keyboard he would never be a truly great employee. But at the same time he was at the company for a decade and never really got a raise.
For me, assuming the company doesn't have a policy against it I'll go out and buy a $200 keyboard just to get into the zone. I feel like I'm much more productive after investing that much. But this goes into my philosophy on jobs in general, your boss is never trying to improve your skill set. He or she only wants you to know just enough to do your job, in fact they'd probably prefer you remain too stupid to leave.
Would you gamble your family eating on this ?
I still remember being a low wage worker, fear is apart of the job ! Most people can't even go a few weeks without a check, it's not like us where we can quit and take a few months to find a job which ideologically aligns with our views.
I've been able to save so much money in the last year, for the first time in my life I would be fine for good amount of time if I got fired today. I very much do expect big companies to force workers back in the office, tons of middle managers don't feel like they're being effective if they can't stare at you typing for 8 hours
Hypothetically let's say Amazon is found to be at fault, even if action is taken your still out of work. I consider myself fairly educated, and I still have no idea what remedies exist if Amazon was to close a warehouse due to unionization. For working class people who are more concerned about paying their bills, voting for a union sounds like a very risky proposition. There's a very good chance Amazon would find a legal trick to either lay off a significant numbers of their staff, or convert some workers to being tempts
For example I long resented the foreign language requirement of many colleges, this alone caused me to go to a less prestigious school. At first I thought this favored those who come from households were more than one language is spoken, but then once I actually talked to my friends from said households they'd tell me unless your parents have money to put you in classes you don't just learn.
If we keep rolling down the rabbit hole, many young adults don't even have stable housing, I can never imagine a world where these potential students would have a fair shot. I myself went through a few evictions as a kid, and in no way shape or form would I have been able to go to a four year school straight out of high school.
College is the status symbol that keeps on giving. Once your college educated you'll find it easier to attract partners who are also college educated, and then if you ever have children you'll be able to build a much better life for them. As opposed to not being able to attend college since your parents are insane and then shacking up with someone from a similar background.
From this point on your life is going to be extremely difficult, I don't think there's anywhere in America where a minimum wage worker can reasonably afford a place to live. I often see articles about millennials having to live with their parents, but I never see articles about what happens when you don't have parents you can live with
Now the same apartments about 1300, and this has only happen in the last decade.
Seriously, make housing easier to build. Don't allow anyone who might be a bit annoyed by construction to file half a dozen complaints and hold up projects by years.
As an extreme measure, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have social programs which help people with relocation expenses. Let's say you had a struggling family in Los Angeles, a good social program would give this family $5,000 to relocate to Nashville, and to rent an apartment in a city where a working class family can survive. But this underscores a very nasty truth, there are cities which are hostile towards working class people. I'm not sure of the society we're ready to embrace this truth
The anti building laws of California are by far the biggest reasons housing is so expensive. Even if Austin gets pricey, you can always drive into the city.
As someone who left California, I will say no one in their right mind should live there. No matter how much you earn, you'll never realistically out earn the cost of living. I found myself quickly deep in credit card debt trying to be cool in California. It's just a horrible place to live, I had to estrange myself from my family to move, and it was absolutely worth it. Anyone who tries to make you live in such a horrible place does not care about you at all.
People are also phenomenally nicer in other cities, I was shocked at how easy it was to meet my girlfriend once I got to Chicago. It's as if Chicago's this amazing City where people understand you need to work to get things you want instead of thinking you're entitled to everything.
Anyway, with remote work now being seen as viable I can see the idea of having expensive big offices becoming antiquated.
Or would I rather be on an eight person team and know that my actions really matter
With remote jobs I don't understand why someone living in a cheaper City should get less.
You might as well subscribe to an individual journalist as long as she or he cites their sources.
I primarily like them for content curation, for example To the Moon is an amazing game I would have never found without them. Let's hope there's a bit of backlash here, and they have to back down from this.
Changing that can be very very difficult for not much gain. Plus AWS skills are very easy to recruit for vs Google cloud.
You need to physically buy Legos for this project. It's not like their showing how to print Legos
The state government has no intention of fixing California's real issues, they just like to liberally posture. Leave now!
Like they wrote the UI in 1999 and never updated it
