offsky··on Schema on write is better to live by
I’m bookmarking this thread for later. So much useful information here that can help me in the future :)
offsky··on Fooling Neural Networks [pdf]
Combine this with Apple’s new photo scanning tech and this could be a new way for bad people to SWAT someone else. Assuming you could fool Apples classifier, just text that manipulated image to the target and they will get flagged.

Any image on the internet that you save to your phone is now a risk to yourself, even if it looks innocent.

offsky··on Scientist says cleaning indoor air could make us healthier and smarter
If we can’t open a window because the outdoor air quality is poor (polluted city) how can we reduce indoor CO2?
offsky··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
This assumes that you don't need the equity in the first house to get the mortgage on the second house.
offsky··on Apple shut down my iCloud account for five days, no warning, no explanation
My rule of thumb that I try to get my family and friends to follow: Always control your own data on your own hardware and treat cloud storage as a convenience, not a necessity. And keep backups.
offsky··on Google can't pass its own page speed test
I wish google would optimize Adsense for Core Vitals. My site gets a 100 score without ads and a score of 80 with Adsense. I’m not willing to give up the ad revenue.
offsky··on “It's a truck full of traffic lights”
If one of the lights in the back of that truck had illuminated red, would the car have put on the breaks in the middle of the road?
offsky··on What I learnt after burning $10M as an entrepreneur
As the founder of Toodledo this really resonated with me. When I launched my todo site it was just me and Remember the Milk. I had one of the first iOS todo apps in the store and I rode that wave. Grew to 7 employees. Then came Reminders and Flow and Asana and Wonderlist and Things and Todoist and ...
offsky··on Tips for Individual and Group Brainstorming
When I was at IDEO I ran and participated in many wonderfully productive brainstorms that produced great ideas that could not have occurred otherwise. Later, at another job I tried to run a brainstorm with people who had never been in a brainstorm and it was a disaster. Like all skills, it takes practice to learn how to defer judgement and build on the ideas of others and to not be afraid to throw out a silly idea. Some of our best ideas at IDEO were silly ideas that someone else built upon to transform into a great idea. After some experience, my new group started having good brainstorms. You need some creative people who are comfortable around each other and you need to practice.

offsky··on Ask HN: Best Source for Desktop Backgrounds
NASA releases high resolution images from the Hubble telescope. If you like space stuff I highly recommend checking it out.
offsky··on Banned Seuss
Would it be wrong to edit the book? This one could easily be changed to “a circus man who walks on sticks” and replace one little drawing.
offsky··on Stop Using Icon Fonts
I think of icon fonts as being the SVG equivalent to image sprites. One download instead of dozens of tiny ones. This can improve performance.

Of course, if you only use a few icons from a huge font, thats bad. SVG is probably better for a few icons and fonts better for when you use many. Subsetting for fonts and lazy loading for images help too.

Both are valid solutions. Optimize and test for your use case.

offsky··on Ask HN: Best Gmail alternative that handles multiple emails in one inbox?
Yes, I am sure it is a staggeringly low percentage, but I would also like to support smaller companies, and I like the idea of being able to contact a real human if a problem occurs. Don't mind paying.
offsky··on We should administer Covid-19 vaccines as fast as possible, not reserve doses
I know second hand that UCSD is giving all doses right now. Vials contain 20% more to account for spills, so they are using this extra to give extra vaccinations. The second dose for each patient will come from future vaccine shipments. Other providers in San Diego may be doing the same thing.
offsky··on Types of Dark Patterns
After breaking myself from a particularly addictive game, I made a website for cataloging dark patterns in games. https://www.darkpattern.games/
offsky··on Indoor CO2 may reach levels harmful to cognition by the end of this century
A regenerative CO2 scrubber that people could install inline with existing whole house AC systems would be a big success. I would buy it in a heartbeat.
offsky··on Web Performance Profiling: Google.com
If you inline everything then you can’t take advantage of caching those resources. I wonder if there is a fancy way to inline the resources and then somehow use JS to cache the data, set a cookie and then on the second page load it’s even faster because you don’t have resend the inlined stuff.
offsky··on WebGL Fluid Simulation
Could this be modified to make a lava lamp simulator?
offsky··on Show HN: Rediscover 80s and 90s Movies
Being stuck at home this summer has inspired my wife and I to show our kids the classic movies that we grew up with during the 80s and 90s (Goonies, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, etc). After going through the obvious ones, we started having difficulty remembering them all, so I created a website for just this purpose: to help parents rediscover movies from their childhood. It shows every film rated PG-13 and lower that was released at least 15 years ago. You can filter the movies by maturity level, add movies to your watch list and see where you can stream the movies. It's a simple website, without ads, that aims to help parents get through the summer with some good kid-friendly movies.

Made with boring technology (PHP and a bit of JS) because it was fastest this way. An interesting technical challenge for me (still ongoing a bit) is cleaning the data. Some screen-scraping, a few APIs to integrate and still a bunch of manual labor for myself hunting for urls to relevant review sites and normalizing things. I ended up pushing most of this manual labor through another one of my projects (https://www.t4sk.dev) which is basically mechanical turk for your personal private microtasks.

Ive already used MovieNight.tips to discover several great 80s movies that I somehow missed while growing up. I hope it helps others as well.

offsky··on Ask HN: Has anyone fixed their own bruxism?
Sleeping without my nightguard feels weird now, plus I’m sure the sleepguard didn’t eliminate all my clenching. I have a much less stressful job now so that helps too.
offsky··on Ask HN: Has anyone fixed their own bruxism?
About 10 years ago I slept with a headband my dentist recommended that could detect clenching and would beep. It would wake me up just enough to stop clenching. It was horrible sleep but worked after awhile and I stopped clenching at night and didn’t need the headband anymore. I still sleep with a nightguard regardless. Don’t remember the name of the headband, sorry. I got rid of it years ago.
offsky··on Paper Airplane Designs
When your own side project shows up on HN, you know it’s going to be a good day. Happy to answer any questions about foldnfly.
offsky··on Ask HN: My wife might lose the ability to speak in 3 weeks – how to prepare?
I’m sorry that the both of you have to deal with this. I’ve read many of the replies here and I’m surprised there isn’t already a self-service website that does this. Pay some money, record some text, and boom here’s your voice. Something like this should exist. Someone should build this.
offsky··on Show HN: Tired of mobile games with IAP and ads, I made No-Bullshit Games
I built a site that’s adjacent to this idea (www.darkpattern.games). It catalogs the dark patterns found in mobile games. Premium currency and ads are two of them but there are many more. The idea is that you could educate yourself so the dark patterns have less power over you and also you can browse the site to find good games that don’t have dark patterns.
offsky··on Meetup.com payment changes coming soon
What happens if someone shows up who didn't RSVP? Turn them away? Make them pay $2 at the door? Let them in for free? If the latter, then nobody will RSVP anymore and just show up.
offsky··on Particles from 3D printers bad for health
My question is why can’t the 3D printers have an onboard exhaust fan that vents the air outside, like a laser cutter does.
offsky··on Show HN: Dark Patterns in Game Design
When I found myself becoming addicted to games that I didn't enjoy playing, I started to do some research about dark patterns in game design, particularly free-to-play mobile games that abuse the in-app purchase mechanic. I personally want to create (and play) healthy games that are actually fun and not just exploiting my neurochemistry.

That's why I created DarkPattern.Games, to share this research so other people can learn to avoid these dark patterns in games that they create or play. The site explains all the dark patterns that I have found and allows people to find and rate mobile games based on how aggressively they use these patterns.

I'm not saying that any game that uses a dark pattern is bad. It's clearly subjective and depends on the intent of the developer and other factors; I tried to convey this on the site.

I still have a lot to learn, so I'm looking for feedback on how to make the site a better resource for improving the healthiness of games. What do people here think about dark patterns in games?

offsky··on People Call My Photos Fake but They're Not
Nearly every astronomy photo you’ve ever seen of a planet, nebula or galaxy is “fake” because they use multiple exposures and filters and software to process them. Does that make them any less amazing or less real. I don’t think so.
offsky··on Show HN: SciFi Logic Puzzle Mystery
I created an interactive sci-fi mystery with 25 original puzzles that you can solve as you go along. It has a variety of puzzles (crossword, sudoku, kakuro, etc) to keep readers entertained. Some of the puzzles involve ciphers. The first puzzle is pretty easy, but they get much harder as you progress. Id love some feedback so I can improve it for my next puzzle experience.
