officeplant··on California closed the Montana license plate loophole
>Also, I've never heard of anyone getting pulled over for tint unless it's like really dark

Idk about the rest of the country, but in my experience in the southern US it's a pretty common tactic to pull you over for assumed illegal tint to try and catch you for other charges. Especially if you aren't white.

officeplant··on PS5 Jailbreaks Are Escalating at an Unprecedented Pace

officeplant··on Lawmakers Introduce Multiple Laws to Curb Flock After 404 Media Coverage
>In The Netherlands, we do have ANPR camera's but they are run by the police and there are strict rules about data retention (no hit on a licence plate means drop the data). ANPR cameras aren't used as dragnet surveillance.

In my city/state (Southern USA) you often see plain unmarked cars with multiple ALPR cameras mounted to the rear of the car. These are usually private companies patrolling streets & parking lots to build databases for REPO/Towing operations. Wouldn't surprise me if they are selling plate location databases to databrokers & law enforcement.

Plus Axon is already replacing Flock in some areas. Unfortunately there are multiple players in this game and Flock going down is only slowing their spread slightly.

officeplant··on The technology to eradicate mosquito-borne disease exists
A brief look over at goodreads paints this book as mostly military history.

Other people in this thread are asking for actual scientific papers and articles. Not some guys military history book with the mosquito shoved in.

“The mosquito has killed more people than any other cause of death in human history. Statistical extrapolation situates mosquito-inflicted deaths approaching half of all humans that have ever lived.”

So once again its just some bull shit.

>As of last month, Steam reports that >10% of their customers have 2GB VRAM or less: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Softw...

Steam having a massive collection of users with older hardware doesn't really make 4GB of VRAM any larger. My current main machine reports less than 1GB since its an iGPU. (But I've seen it use over 8gb of system memory as VRAM)

>I'm not familiar with Subnautica, is that known for being particularly efficient?

Its a pretty well made unity engine game with a minimum requirement of Intel HD4000 integrated graphics. IDK if it would be consideredban efficient game vs other visually nice from this time frame like DOOM 2016 which runs really well on 4GB vram cards if you stick to 900p and below resoultions.

officeplant··on Factorio that you can touch
That's the amount of VRAM that has shipped in budget to midtier gpu's since at least 2016 with the RX470/480 from AMD. You can find even older & slower examples from Nvidia and AMD (ex. Nvidia 740GT 4GB edition)

Gaming hardware reviewers have been complaining about 4GB of VRAM not being enough since probably 2018 onward.

I have a weird setup with two very old 5:4 1280x1024 monitors I like to use for fun, and even playing Subnautica (2018 Release date) I can use up 3.4GB of VRAM at that low of a resolution on High settings. (playing on a single monitor)

officeplant··on Factorio that you can touch
The post had me wondering if factorio had done like [1]Prodeus did where it's all 3D models, but by default is viewed as 2D sprite animations.

> Buying the oil, filters and all the tools you need to do it forever would cost less than one oil change at the dealership.

Are you changing your own oil? The cost of oil alone usually ends up being around 3 DIY changes vs one at the dealer ship. The mobile 1 synthetic I like is currently $92 for a 3-pack of 5qt containers. Which is enough for 3 oil changes with some left over to almost do a 4th. Dealership currently wants $84+tax for change w/free tire rotation. It's cheaper but certainly not "do it forever", and living in an apartment often means risking getting a warning from the landlord for doing auto maintenance in the parking lot since its against the stated rules in the lease.

officeplant··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
Just as a point of contention. Its hard to find an EV that is only gonna pull 1000w using the heater.

My EV doesn't have a heatpump and the resistive heating pulls up to 8KW warming up the cabin on a cold day.

I keep a 12v heated blanket around to save power. (no heated seats/steering wheel)

Heated seats are where the real power savings come in.

officeplant··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
At the same time it's pretty crazy to look at my Ford E-Transit's power draw while on the interstate and think about just how many electronics I could power with the 20-60KW of power draw it takes to maintain 65mph on a relatively flat stretch of highway.

>This is why summarily labeling folks as "nazis", "racists", "genocide supporters", etc. doesn't advance the conversation; it shuts it down, and my feeling is that's why we're seeing the types of political threads we see on HN

We're all tired of fighting for survival, and under no circumstances will we stop calling a spade a spade. Beating around the bush is how we got here in the first place.

officeplant··on Why is Hacker News like that?
>This is not to say that the US shouldn't be criticized. Let's have that discussion. But why on HN?

This is foremost a tech focused website, and currently the US is basically tech-Hitler for lack of a better term. So it makes sense we would come up in discussion as the current thread of techno-fascism works its way through all portions of American existence.

officeplant··on GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car
Steady 10KW load means 40 less miles after an hour of driving if your EV gets 4mi/kwh. That kind of draw would use up nearly 1/6th of my EV's battery in an hour.

We had to redo and re-pull so many circuits in the last datacenter project.

>you can’t use Apple Car Play if you don’t enable Siri.

It works for me, but I'm using wired carplay on an iphone 11 w/ios27. (In the US, Swapped to Siri Classic, then disabled it.)

Looking around online it seems doing it wired can bypass the Siri requirement. Which may work in my case because in the Ford headunit I can force wireless projection to be off and blocked (including turning off the wifi for the headunit). So some cars might be forcing wireless Carplay and triggering the Siri requirement.

But 50GB is $0.99 and I'm only really paying for it since I have a bunch of their private email addresses in use. iPhone backup with just the essentials I trust them with is less than 2GB.

I don't know how I would even begin to fill the 50GB plan since I don't trust any cloud storage provider with pictures and videos.
