officeplant··on Xbox continues its “reset” with dramatic restructuring
Given they just laid off most of the id team I wouldn't hold any hope.
officeplant··on What It's Like to Work in One of America's Data Centers
No instead in my experience its end clients being cheap bastards and having the electricians also pull fire alarm cable.

We had to redo and re-pull so many circuits in the last datacenter project.

> just last week my Linux laptop disabled NVIDIA GPU

The ancient wisdom of "never nvidia" when using Linux/BSD continues to ring true into the future.

officeplant··on macOS 27: Workaround to avoid downloading AI models and save storage
>you can’t use Apple Car Play if you don’t enable Siri.

It works for me, but I'm using wired carplay on an iphone 11 w/ios27. (In the US, Swapped to Siri Classic, then disabled it.)

Looking around online it seems doing it wired can bypass the Siri requirement. Which may work in my case because in the Ford headunit I can force wireless projection to be off and blocked (including turning off the wifi for the headunit). So some cars might be forcing wireless Carplay and triggering the Siri requirement.

But 50GB is $0.99 and I'm only really paying for it since I have a bunch of their private email addresses in use. iPhone backup with just the essentials I trust them with is less than 2GB.

I don't know how I would even begin to fill the 50GB plan since I don't trust any cloud storage provider with pictures and videos.

Except nothing about AI produces properly open source code? You can't prove it didn't pull from closed source code, no more clean room approaches if everyone just wants to bow to the LLMs.

Even beyond all the other ethical issues I don't see how the open source world accepts this.

officeplant··on Running Ubuntu on the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet
>I really don't get their approach. Besides, Linux (and Linus) accepts and are doing AI contributions, so their argument makes no sense (since they're a Linux distro)

Sometimes the base has to fight the insanity coming from the top down.

officeplant··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Apparently the Swede's have a term for how I live my life in general. Gotta minimize the work for whoever shows up after I pull the eject lever.
officeplant··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
I'm on the other side of the country, and I can watch new super deluxe drive-thru carwashes being built with a storage facility neighbor.

The crazy part being two blocks over is a competing super deluxe-carwash with storage facility neighbor.

At this point my city is up to dozens of these pairs of property squatting businesses.

Sometimes I have to log in just to ask:

Why would you think one of the more beloved projects for linux mobile phones would be pro-AI?

officeplant··on New York thoracic surgeon: "For many patients 9/11 is not over"
> just like how the US went into Afghanistan for no reason in 2001.

We did go there for no reason since they weren't involved in 9/11.

I'm sure the Torment Nexus can be improved.
officeplant··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
>In theory the LLM will escalate or recommend professional help if they're out of their depth.

Given there have been multiple suicides driven by LLMs. I really doubt that.

Honestly I could go for a mental health cougar right about now.

>but there's not one for miles in my neighborhood.

Pet owners should know to bring bags with them, as they are taking the pet out for it to shit somewhere other than their yard.

It's 100% an asshole pet owner problem. Owning a pet that is shitting somewhere other than your own yard means bringing bags on walks and being prepared to hold that shit filled bag in your hand for the rest of the walk until you can throw it away at home.

It can be partially mitigated by having trashcans and poop bag dispensers, but I've stepped in dog shit next to a poop bag dispenser. Because having trashcans and bags be available doesn't change asshole pet owner habits.

>while the AIs are still developing too quickly for enshittification

LLM's were born enshittified, there was no enjoyable era. It was made by the enshittification machine for the enshittification machine.

Bill Hicks really did say it best when it came to marketing:

"By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing… kill yourself. It’s just a little thought; I’m just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day they’ll take root – I don’t know. You try, you do what you can."

officeplant··on iPhone Duo
>Microsoft literally does not have a product like this.

Well yes their product like this is so old its already been discontinued. The Surface Duo targeted the same unfolded layout / passport sized folded device the iPhone Duo is, but opted for different folding methods and screen solutions.

officeplant··on iPhone Duo
> it's somewhat uncommon for people to actually buy their phones outright unless you make a lot of money

Or like many of us, you buy cheaper phones outright for your prepaid phone plans. The fact that people still go for contract phone services and finance a new phone every two years blows my mind. Especially when I can get all the data/minutes/texts I need for $15 a month on a service like Tello, and just get a phone for $200-400 that I can use until it dies. Which is currently a used iPhone 11 I recently opened up to replace the battery.

officeplant··on iPhone Duo
Hell before the recent price hikes $2000 would get you a Macbook Neo, an iPad Mini, and an iPhone 17e.
officeplant··on iPhone Duo
I can't even afford the 17e, who is this we?
officeplant··on iPhone Duo
Will have to give it a fingernail test in the apple store so I'm not destroying my own $2000 phone.
officeplant··on iPhone Duo
Apple: Every one else does folding wrong!

Also Apple: We've done it the exact way Samsung and Microsoft did it! We even used the same Duo name as Microsoft!

>Automatic braking alone is a huge deal

Except I had to turn it off for my Ford E-Transit, because it will freak out at nothing. Sometimes it screams at me for cars that aren't even in my lane that suddenly slowed. Sometimes it misjudges a ripple in the crappy asphalt here as an obstacle I'm going to hit. There is a high chance its going to brake for no reason at all and cause an accident.

I left the warning system on, but I will never give it control over the brakes.
