officelineback··on Happiness report: Norway is the happiest place on earth
I've always been borderline obsessed with Finland and Norway. It's easy to say the US should be more like them but they have the big advantage of being much smaller and MUCH more culturally homogeneous.
officelineback··on Web Scraping: Bypassing “403 Forbidden,” captchas, and more
Reminds me of the battle between hackers and Niantic to create scanners for Pokemon Go.

Do we do relevant XKCD here at HN? Cos https://xkcd.com/1172/
officelineback··on Bitcoin arbitrage without market risk
People aren't rational.

>online support groups

Nice double entendre.

officelineback··on A million-dollar engineering problem
I'm pretty much that in my current job only with a salary. Here's why: I can make all the recommendations I want but change has to be driven by the will of the higher ups, often as high as C-level folks (CIO/CTO). So you pay me to make recommendations, not to actually save you the money, because the second part is largely out of my control.

Having said that, all the cost savings initiatives I've spearheaded are on my resume and LinkedIn profile and I take great satisfaction in optimizing those environments to save the client money.

officelineback··on Police ask for whole city's Google searches, and a judge says yes
Oh man you just reminded me of the Will Arnett skit from Human Giant. The one where Aziz Ansari "disguises" himself as Mary Kate Olsen to sneak into a party.
officelineback··on A million-dollar engineering problem
Is this the same thing as segment.io?
officelineback··on Some writers who lied or plagiarized
Mildly entertaining read but not sure if it fits HN's "intellectual" requirement.
officelineback··on Tesla to raise $1B
You make a great point, as I was thinking the exact same thing.

Sure, Tesla as a company may not take off as some people expect, but they have already had a huge impact on the automotive industry and the American Collective Consciousness.

officelineback··on Flying machines of Chinese farmers
There are pictures embedded in the article.
officelineback··on The last line effect explained
So the idea is, the last line of each "chunk" of code tends to be where bugs are focused because it's the last thing a programmer implements in that "session" if you will, and they are already starting to be distracted by whatever they're doing next?
officelineback··on Frozen Alive
Is this based on a true story?
officelineback··on Why Trello Failed to Build a $1B Business
I agree with you, and others in this thread have lauded Trello's success. But the author of the page is angling for another interpretation, and I'm trying to figure out what he hopes to get out of it.
officelineback··on Password Rules Are Bullshit
2FA is something you know and something you have.

So fingerprint gives you part 2 and password gives you part 1.

No need for an additional MFA device.

officelineback··on Why Trello Failed to Build a $1B Business
I mean, I get what the guy is saying, but look at the text vs subtext here:

text is "here is advice to take a burgeoning company to the stratosphere" But honestly, how many people in that position are going to read this blog post? 3? 10? If this was his true intention, he would have packaged this as some kind of super premium offering that only well-connected VCs could read or something.

subtext: "I'm really smart about what takes a company from success to HUUGE SUCCESS." Is this guy trying to gain a rep in VC circles as a CEO of late stage startups or something? What's his angle?

officelineback··on William Shatner's Seat
That's interesting, that also resembles the AA symbol.
officelineback··on To fix L.A.'s traffic, we need tolls
So the conditions change so quickly that opening Waze just before you leave doesn't at least give you a ballpark estimate?
officelineback··on Uber drivers in Norway must pay back all earnings and lose their license
I'm going to have to agree with other posters that have had the opposite experience.

The majority of taxi drivers I come across are terrible drivers. They pump the brakes on the highway when there is no traffic, they go slow in the left lane, make illegal turns, and don't know where they are going.

Lyft drivers are hit and miss, but for the most part, are people who are good at driving and getting where they are going. Plus they all use waze or Google Maps, so their directions are good.

I've had to exhort a couple of Lyft drivers (I try to avoid the other one) to go faster to keep up with traffic, but other then that, they are on average 2 steps above taxi drivers in terms of alacrity and situational awareness.

(This is in the Washington DC area BTW)

officelineback··on Two frequently used system calls are ~77% slower on AWS EC2
>Is this just an EC2 problem, or does it affect any Xen/KVM guest?

Looks like it's how the Xen hypervisor works.

officelineback··on Summary of the Amazon S3 Service Disruption
I don't think it's automatic. I just helped my former boss with his decision to go for a refund (he asked me for help drafting a request, but I reminded him that like 99.99% of their S3 storage is backups that are IA-Standard, so it may not be worth it).
officelineback··on Summary of the Amazon S3 Service Disruption
S3 endpoints in your VPC?
officelineback··on Why Some Cars Have Gas Tank Fillers on the Left or the Right
Because the charging receptacle isn't a safety hazard in an impact, it can be placed in a central location, such as the middle of the front or rear.

Speaking of which, do electric vehicles even have a hood?

officelineback··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
Other regions still work, but the web console relies on us-east-1 so you should use the API to create new buckets until the issue is resolved.
officelineback··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
Agreed. AWS' postmortems are fascinating.
officelineback··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
Browsing works but some functionality is broken; for example you can't view your order history.
officelineback··on Uber's SVP of engineering is out
>But within a year, rather than do good, Singhal had gotten a top job at Uber.

Heh. A not too subtle burn.

officelineback··on “I was just asked to balance a Binary Search Tree by JFK's airport immigration”
I was just overcome with anxiety...the answer is 10, right?
officelineback··on “I was just asked to balance a Binary Search Tree by JFK's airport immigration”
I've noticed lately that there are now TSA agents in the security lines which are ostensibly there to help direct people, but you can tell they are very high social aptitude people and very smooth. They are feeling people out and seeing if anyone is super nervous or suspicious.
officelineback··on Saudi Arabia's Oil Wealth Is About to Get a Reality Check
To me, 11% of all transport fuel demand is a lot! I wonder what the balance is for trains, long haul trucks, are diesel delivery trucks in general are.
